Upsizing clothes! There are a million upcycling tutorials for clothes that are too big, but so few on how to make too small clothes you still love bigger!
Thank you for your suggestion! We all go through weight fluctuations in life, so it stands to reason our clothes should be able to fluctuate with us.
Resizing your clothes used to be a very common practice before the advent of fast fashion. Fast fashion sizing is extremely flawed, especially when it comes to plus size fashion, and we're stuck with a lot of vanity sizing, so it's a good skill to have regardless of whether you're looking to mend something old or buy something new.
How to upsize clothes:
Introduction:
There are many different ways to make a garment larger. The following list is not exhaustive, just a few ideas to get you started.
Grading patterns:
If you're making your own clothes, it's always useful to know how to modify a sewing pattern. The easiest way to adjust a pre-existing pattern to your size is slash and spread grading. First, you need to define which spots on the pattern need extra space. You then cut your pattern in that spot, and slide the resulting pattern pieces away from each other until you've got the size you need. Use paper to fill in the gaps. To ensure the resulting pattern makes for well-fitting clothes, make a mock-up and add, move, or remove darts where necessary to adapt it to your body type.
The image below shows potential slashing lines on pattern blocks for an AFAB body. Unfortunately this was the only diagram I could find, but know that other types of patterns use similar line placements. Each line is a spot that allows you to add extra space. To read more about this process, check out the corresponding article by Threads Magazine.

To make your clothes easier to let out in the future, make sure to provide ample seam allowance when cutting out your pattern pieces. This surplus fabric has several different uses, including giving you some wiggle room for when you need to size up your garment.
Now, let's take a look at pre-made garments.
Lengthening clothes:
A garment that's too short on you is easy to modify. Just add more material!
If it's a skirt or a dress, add ruffles to the bottom. Ruffles are easy to make by hand or with a sewing machine. You could also add lace, or wear the item with an underskirt.
For pants, let down your hem or sew on a new cuff. If this isn't enough, maybe consider turning your trousers into capri pants or shorts.
As for shirts, sewing an extra layer to the bottom edge is the easiest way to go, too. You could even combine two shirts into one to get an extra long shirt.
Another option is to cut your item in two and insert extra fabric between your separated garment parts.

Letting out seams/darts:
Remember how we made sure to have ample seam allowance earlier? When a garment has surplus fabric in the seams and you only need a little extra space, you can undo the seams of your garment and sew them back together again, this time with a smaller seam allowance than before. The Spruce Crafts has a pretty good tutorial on how to let out seams. You won't be able to make major size changes using this technique, but if you only need a few centimetres, this is a good way to go.
A lot of garments also have darts. Darts are fabric folds that are sewn down in strategic places to help the fabric follow the body's curves. If a dart doesn't fit you the way you want it to, then unpick the dart and try on the garment. Either leave the dart open, or pin the dart in place however you want it, then take off the garment again and sew the dart back together.
Be careful not to rip the fabric when using a seam ripper. Also note that removing entire darts may change the garment's fit.
You can also add custom darts to achieve a better fit, but that's a topic for another time.

Adding extra fabric to your garment:
If we need to add more room than seam allowance or darts can provide us with, we need to add extra material. Remember those slashing lines we looked at earlier? If you're working with a pre-existing garment rather than a pattern, those are the perfect places to chop up your clothes and add in extra fabric.
Check your sewing stash for fabric that's similar in weight and material to your original garment, or go thrift shopping for an item you could use to upsize your garment. Long skirts and maxi dresses are a great source of fabric for alterations like these!
Lace inserts are also a fun choice to add some room, and if you're working with a knit item, you could even knit or crochet your own custom insert.
Define the area where you want to add extra fabric on your item, and measure how much you need. Draw a straight line on your garment with chalk/soap. Make sure the line doesn't cross any important structural or functional parts of your garment like darts or button holes: refer to the slashing diagram we saw earlier if you're not sure what spot to pick. Cut the line open (or unpick the seam if it's situated on a seam), and add in your extra fabric. Finish off your new seams so they don't unravel later on, and you're done!
You can add straight strips of fabric for extra width or length, or you could use flared panels or even godets to make your item flair out.
Want to see this technique in action? Check out this video by Break n Remake:

Some ideas:
This Pinterest user cut a straight line down the front of a t-shirt and inserted a lace panel to add extra width in the front of the garment.

Busy Geemaw cut open the side seams of a shirt and used flared panels to add some extra width in the bust and hip area.

This person added a panel to the sides of a pair of jeans to give them more space in the hip area. You could easily use a long straight panel or a panel that flares at the bottom to resize the entire garment instead of just the hips, or use a wide piece of elastic for extra stretch.

This person added a godet in the back of their shirt in order to get more space in the back.

Blue Corduroy enlarged a pair of shorts by opening up the side seams and adding in strips of fabric.

You don't need to resize the entire garment if you don't want to. For example, One Brown Mom turned this ankle-length skirt with a too small waistband into a well-fitting knee-length skirt by taking advantage of the skirt's flared shape.

Conclusion:
Throughout our lives, our weight will fluctuate and our bodies will change. There's no shame in this: it's just a fact of life. Therefore, knowing how to upsize an item that is too small for you is a useful skill to learn.

Hi lyde since you’re the reason why I got into dream husbands I figured I should ask if u can recommend some good fics about these two as I’m obsessed
This makes me so happy!! It’s been a while since I read fics from the inception fandom, but this is because I read... at least 300+ fics. I got to the 15th page of the most kudo’ed fics not to mention the recent ones  *rethinks life decisions*. Problem is, I don’t know if you’ve already read the classics or not?? I mean some of my all time favourites are pretty popular/old. I’ll try to vary a bit, tell me later if you want more recent fics.
Edit: Another problem I’ve encountered: I can’t remember half of my bookmarks. Seriously. Also why does the inception fandom LOVE one liner cryptic summaries. How am I supposed to remember AAAH.
Edit edit: there are a lot more. thank you for this because there are so many good fics, my heart is warm with memories. the inception fandom is probably the best there is.
Presque Vu - (E, I don’t care how long it is READ THIS ) simply my favourite fic of all time. The Classic. The Fic. The Best. The fic starts with the premise that Arthur was Mal’s best friend first, and everything else (Dom’s right hand man, Eames’ lover, the best point man ever) later. It delivers so well. My only problem with this fic is that I don’t like half of the paintings it references, but I already knew Arthur has shitty snobby difficult tastes lmao. Seriously. I love this like a favourite book. I fucking imprinted on this fic.
Lucky - (M, 37k) - the only kid fic I would DIE for probably. The entire series is so good. Even if kid fics aren’t your thing, give this one a try. Among other things I loved about this, since I read this fic Portugal has entered my top 5 countries to visit list.
the way you move is like a full on rainstorm (and I'm a house of cards) - (T, 52k) - Arthur becomes a pop star, Eames is one of his backup dancers. You probably know how much I love Music AUs if you follow me and this one is a delight, so, so good.
Life Among Islands - (M, 21k) - The Holiday!AU you will fall in love with. Ariadne and Arthur move into each other’s house for a month as a forced/much needed holiday, for different reasons. Both find love. It sounds light but has very good emotional moments. It’s also not too long, while the others on this list uhhh.... How much time do you have to sacrifice to the altar of fanfictions?
Do You (Run When It's Just Getting Good) - (E, 15k) - Look. I don’t remember this one, but I bookmarked it with the tag ‘ARTHUR IS HUMAN IN THIS’ so I trust past!me. The cryptic summary: There was a time when Eames thought he knew what to make of Arthur, but that was a time when they were both young and stupid. Or at least younger and somewhat more stupid. Now Eames knows better than to think he knows anyone at all, but especially Arthur, and most of the time he wishes that he also knew better than to let Arthur do the things that he does. The things that Arthur does go something like this.
The Only Living Boy in New York - (E, 47k WOW THESE ARE ALL SO LONG SORRY) - Arthur and Eames in limbo for 47k words. I read this bookmark and my mind screamed ‘OH MY GOD THIS ONE WAS SO GOOD’. I don’t remember much but it was very, very, very good. No ok I remember this and it will punch you in a way that you’ll say ‘thank you’ after.
All the world is bullet shaped - (E, 76k look apparently I like inception novels) - for once a useful, half-cryptic summary: If Arthur thinks that, just by waving enough money around, he can get Eames to risk his life and reputation to rescue him from a death sentence, he's got another thing coming. So Eames sets a malicious, undignified price on his services, one he can be certain that a man like Arthur would never condescend to pay. It turns out to be the first of many mistakes.
This one is one of my favourites! I loved Eames’ family in this so so much.
Saveur - (M, 14k) - I don’t remember this. why did I bookmark this with 16 ‘!’.
the fucking cryptic summary: The pleasures of the table, and of life, are infinite - Julia Child WHAT ARE YOU
OH WAIT IT’s the CHEF AU I LOVED OMG YES THIS ONE IS GOOD. I REMEMBER. I REMEMBER. this fandom is truly too talented...
In Our Line of Work - (T,15k) - Holy shit thank you for this trip down the memory lane this fic is so good I love it so much TvT I’ll reread this today. It has one of my favourite takes on Arthur. It also carries some of Nolan love for time-bending, mind-blowing stuff. Summary:
Arthur wakes up and realizes the last ten years of his life have been a dream. He is nineteen, and he can barely remember where he is. What he can remember is the ghost of Eames’ hands pressed down on his chest trying frantically to stop the blood flooding up around his fingers as Arthur died (as he woke up).
Next Big Thing - (M, 283k I KNOW IT’s LONG BUT GOD LET ME HAVE THIS) - The one where they’re star on HGTV. the entire series is hilarious and so fun, it is a delight and very well written. Actually, anything by this author is gold: earlgreytea68.
Finally, another top 5 AUs of all time: Ach, des Knaben Augen -( E, 24k) - first part of a series that made me cry and laugh and stayed in my heart for months, Arthur is a pianist, Eames sings. The author Knows TM music. It is truly on another level.
(last but not least, this series:  Wherever You Will Be (That's Where I'll Call Home) [The DomesticVerse] )

hey writers if you want to make a metaphor for racism, please maybe remember that racism is literally based on nothing. Africans weren’t enslaved en masse because the Robo-Musa threatened to destroy the world, they were enslaved because it was economically rewarding and politically convenient. If at any point your allegory for racism includes “so <oppressed group> did this major catastrophe and” then you have not only missed the point but you are literally reinforcing the ideas that racism have let racism self-perpetuate (that e.g. black people are naturally dangerous and violent and must be contained or begrudgingly accepted by the Nice White People)

Apparently a lot of people get dialogue punctuation wrong despite having an otherwise solid grasp of grammar, possibly because they’re used to writing essays rather than prose. I don’t wanna be the asshole who complains about writing errors and then doesn’t offer to help, so here are the basics summarized as simply as I could manage on my phone (“dialogue tag” just refers to phrases like “he said,” “she whispered,” “they asked”):
“For most dialogue, use a comma after the sentence and don’t capitalize the next word after the quotation mark,” she said.
“But what if you’re using a question mark rather than a period?” they asked.
“When using a dialogue tag, you never capitalize the word after the quotation mark unless it’s a proper noun!” she snapped.
“When breaking up a single sentence with a dialogue tag,” she said, “use commas.”
“This is a single sentence,” she said. “Now, this is a second stand-alone sentence, so there’s no comma after ‘she said.’”
“There’s no dialogue tag after this sentence, so end it with a period rather than a comma.” She frowned, suddenly concerned that the entire post was as unasked for as it was sanctimonious.

11 year old me really figured out the meaning of gay and lesbian, had a dream the next day where my friend kissed me cheek and pulled out a very lesbian sunset she painted and said "ah a perfect painting for two lesbian gals like us" but somehow when I woke up I was like "ah yes I am very straight"

should I keep my main character as a pretty shitty person in general and have her grow throughout the series, or should I just make her a decent person from the start? Which would people prefer?
