Why I like John
Tumblr media
"I don't deserve better..."
UnOrdinary might be one of the riskiest series I've ever seen.
The premise of the story is about a world where everyone is born with some sort of power and knows next to nothing about how to keep these powers in control.
From that premise we have our main character, John, who plays a really interesting role as the biggest victim and the biggest danger in this kind of world.
(Spoilers for UnOrdinary)
John started off as someone with no special abilities and because of that he became the target of a lot of bullying at his school alongside his two only friends, but that changed when he finally unlocked his own power and used to take revenge on everyone that harmed him in the past.
Sadly, that didn't stop there as his power ended up being much stronger than people expected and all that power added with resentment from the bullying he suffered plus the fact he was a young kid at the time, ended up making John an even bigger oppressor than those before.
he ended up hurting even his best friends leaving himself completely alone and filled with regret, so much so that he decided to hide his powers from others afraid of going back to his aggressive ways.
Only problem was… Even if John was trying to change to be better, the world remained the same, and when he tried to act like someone without powers, a new set of bullies started to show up to pick on him, leading him to resort to violence once again.
Tumblr media
Something that I really like about this series is that it greatly captures the ugliness of violence.
There are many stories where a main character loses control and starts going berserk and beating everyone up, but most of the time it's meant to be something cool and exciting, while here, it's always meant to be disturbing and depressing (you know, as violence should be!)
John doesn't just beat up bullies with his powers, he beats up anyone that says anything that makes him angry, and the kid is angered very easily.
Just like Ramses, John is someone who refuses to accept he is in the wrong because of his past as a victim of abuse, leading him to always assuming that anyone who doesn't agree with him must also be an abuser that needs to be put down.
What's sad about it is that you kinda get where he is coming from, you get why he is angry and why he doesn't want to listen even if you know he needs to be stopped. Just like how Ramses and Zuko were raised to believe in a distorted set of morals, John grew up believing there was barely any good in the world leading him to slowly stop trying to be good as well and just doing whatever the hell he wanted while ignoring the consequences.
Tumblr media
But what's so clever about the way the story is told is that it shows how this mindset is just making him more and more miserable.
The nice tragedy about John is that during the entire duration of the comic he has not once ever been fully happy.
When he was hiding his powers he would get abused, when he showed his powers he would be feared and would act destructive, when he tried to avoid people in order not to hurt them he would just be alone and thus wouldn't learn what he needed to change about himself in order to grow.
John should have everything he needed to be happy. Friends, powers, intelligence, kindness, but for one reason or another he never has these things at the same time.
Sometimes he will hide his powers, sometimes he will distance himself from people, sometimes he will stop being kind to others, and because one of these things keeps always missing he never ends up finding peace in his life.
And I really like and respect that. I like that this series doesn't put John above morals just because he is the main lead and I like that it doesn't try to be cheap about it by just making John a misunderstood person.
John's not a misunderstood victim, he's definitely in the wrong regarding his choices and he is treated as someone who is in fact in the wrong by the story.
Tumblr media
His arc is really interesting to watch because he keeps trying to change others around him instead of trying to improve on himself and that always ends up blowing up in his face.
I think this is a point that many people often don't seem to get. I know many fans of the series that get upset because the bullies around John don't own up to their abuse, but that's the entire idea, you can't just wait and expect people to change and be better just because you want to, the only one that you can change is yourself.
This is a lesson that John seems to slowly be realizing as well and honestly, even after all the terrible things he did in the past I still find myself rooting for him to improve because it does feel like he himself wants to be someone better at the end of the day.
Even though I can totally see why anyone would hate him, I just can't help but like this guy, because I'm just fascinated by all the themes he represents. I love the idea of a story about showing the futility of violence and how that leads nowhere in the end, and a story about learning to understand yourself before you understand others.
I just love this character and really respect this series and I'm looking forward to see where it goes!

au where instead of John playing cripple from the start of his time at Wellston, he claims his ability is limited to copying the Speed trait of other abilities, and plays at being like a 3.5. Just barelyyyyy an elite, and high up enough to garner respect from most of the school population.
Just speed alone would be nice bc ppl would know that it’s hard to catch him when he runs + he could power up without hurting anyone. It would allow him to disinvolve himself from handing out physical punishment, bc it’s not a “good” ability at all.
Plus, since he hangs with Sera (and it does seem like he can copy her ability), he could copy her Speed without her needing to always personally step in. Ppl wouldn’t be so quick to mess with them once Sera got disabled + John could pick her up and run away (and later teach her to fight)
Still in line with his thoughts on him being unqualified to be a vigilante + trusting that the authorities or Someone out there is doing their best and taking care of everyone

the tragic thing about john doe is that he was doomed from the start.
he was likely born in a low- or mid-tier district: new bostin high's old king, zirian, was the only one john had trouble beating, before he figured out how to amplify abilities, and at the time he beat zirian, zirian was a 3.7. zirian, pre-john, was considered incredibly powerful, nigh unbeatable. in new bostin, someone who was barely an elite was considered incredibly powerful.
god-tiers are already incredibly rare. they're even more rare than high-tiers, and whenever remi, blyke, and isen visit a low-tier district as vigilantes, everyone regards them almost as royalty - unbelievably powerful, unreachable, divinity on earth. they are with dozens, and they’re terrified of a single, non-hostile girl. also, some of the background characters say: “what’s a high-tier doing in branish?” “yeah, they would never come to a place like this.” most low-tiers likely have never even seen a high-tier in the flesh, let alone a god-tier.
add to that that wellston is supposed to be the most powerful school in the province, at least, and before john, there were only two god-tiers in attendance: an 8.0 and a 6.3. and before arlo became king, rei was, and rei was a 5.8. the king of the strongest school in the province was a 5.8.
jane doe was raised in a god-tier family. she knows, presumably, what it means to be a god-tier, when everyone around you is weaker than you, and not by a little bit. but jane has been gone since john was a toddler - and the only person left to raise him was his father. his cripple father, who has lived his whole life being spat on, disregarded, considered less than.
and then you have john. john first discovered his ability in his last year of middle school. unordinary doesn't give us an exact timeframe, but it is mentioned that he first uses his ability towards the end of the school year. if we assume that the education system in unordinary is comparable to the us education system, then that makes john about fourteen years old. it is never mentioned when most kids discover their abilities, but sera mentioned that she got martial arts lessons for a few years when she was a young child, but stopped when her ability came in. assuming sera's development is normal and abilities usually come in at the same age regardless of level, that would place the average age well before ten. another thing: everyone around john seemed to assume he would never get an ability. they considered him a cripple. which either means that late-bloomers are so incredibly rare that it isn't even considered a possibility, or john was so far past the age of ability manifestation that no one thought it was possible.
of course, his dad was also a cripple, and since genetics are a thing in uno, it would make sense for people to assume john would be a cripple even before he passed the manifestation age. (and treat him accordingly)
john got expelled in his second year in high school. when, exactly, doesn't really matter. once again assuming that the uno education system works like the us education system, that would place john at 15-16 years old.
so you have this kid, sixteen years old, who's had his ability for about two years. he spent most of his life being considered the lowest of the low - spat on, disregarded, less than. his dad, his only parental figure, has had those exact same experiences, and the only thing he can tell his child is that that is just the way the world works. it's unfair, but that's life.
but then he gets an ability. and within two years, he is almost twice as strong as the second strongest kid around. none of the adults have ever met someone as strong as him. him, the former cripple, with the cripple father. former lowest of the low, now a god amongst men. the kids, though, his classmates, his peers, they don't really understand his power. how much stronger he is than them. to tell the truth, he doesn't either, not fully. he's never met someone as strong as he is, at sixteen. but his classmates, they just remember when they used to walk all over him. when they would beat him bloody and then complain about getting his disgusting cripple blood on their shoes. and now he dares to stand above them?
they don't like him. of course they don't. cripples aren't able to become gods. they can't comprehend that john did.
and john, obviously, lashes out at his former bullies. he finally has a chance to pay them back, for all the cuts, bruises, broken bones he'd received from them over the years. he's stronger than them, and it's his turn to make them hurt. he goes farther than they did - their abilities are useless against the might of his power - but he doesn't really care. (they never held back, so he doesn't either, and the damage he does is much, much worse. the adults are mad, and he doesn't get why. he's only doing what everyone else does.)
the adults have no idea how to handle him. he's out of control. but they've never seen an ability this powerful before, except on tv, or in stories. high-rankers are supposed to keep order. (but no one listens to john. why would they? he's just a cripple, the lowest of the low, who managed to cheat the system.) his dad, kind-hearted william doe the cripple, has no idea how to help him. he can't relate to his problems at all. (is there even a problem? who wouldn't want to be powerful? for william, for adrian, for claire, it'd be a dream come true. it used to be, for john.) there is no one around who even vaguely knows what it's like to be a god-tier, or even a high-tier, or even just a high-ranker in general, except for zirian, who's barely a high-ranker at all, and who hates john for dethroning him. there is no one who understands him.
so then you have john. sixteen years old. god-tier. angry at the world, and the world is angry at him. how was he ever supposed to win?
