Even if I made a lot of stories and comics as a kid I never really wrote anything and barely read any fanfic, I would mostly stick to being a visual artist but now that I write A LOT MORE ( I don't write fanfics though I write scripts ) it's like, damn now I understand. The 293857235 headcanons that seem so useless to know from a visual artist POV but now you're like hey hold up, their favourite dessert is actually so important to their backstory. I would just draw the characters in the most canon-compliant way, crack a few jokes here and there, now I need this blorbo obliterated beyond recognition. I mean I knew, but now I understand better if you know what I mean.

Taiwan being a sapphic is so important to me and in the latest hetalia volume there's a bonus page of her with Czechia and I was like "Taiwan is really on a quest to get all of the hetalia women" and I wish her good luck, she's so real for that.

sorry for the hiatus, I finally went back as a minimum wage worker recently bc things got bad. Once I get my first paycheck and get this thing out of the way I’ll probably get better and be able to do art like before. But for now I still need to lay down a bit… the monetary pressure got the best of me OTL

One of the things that I've learned that really made a difference is doing facial expressions right.

it actually makes up a good proportion of the character's design and it’s something I often see in other people’s art where they don’t get it right no matter the art style. I think in Hetalia it’s even more important because some characters (unfortunately) look the same from afar so their expressions is something that can help to differentiate them. It might be hard to get right but It will also help the character look less uncanny. It's also more fun to make them more expressive and less stiff :D You can also use non-facial expression like the posture and mannerism ( for reference, you don't have to look further than the goat himself Romano )

So in a few words: Pay attention to each character’s set of expressions, because it’s a huge part of their character design !

and if you are creating ocs, putting an effort in the facial expressions of each individual is something you should consider !

it genuinely amazes me how people can just be sitting there one day and go “yep im gonna absolutely master this one very specific and niche drawing style” and meanwhile i cant even draw a straight line

It was « pick your autistic special interest » day but I was late and that’s what they had left for me, that was 11 years ago…
