warnings: sweet home 2 spoilers, mentions of blood, injuries. hyunsu himself is a warning lowkey if u watched the last ep u probably get it… that’s all!

synopsis: You know Hyunsu so well. One year apart couldn’t possibly change that. Except if Hyunsu isn’t alone anymore.

authors note: realized at the end of this fic that i cld compare hyunsu’s current situation to venom like a little bit and that just makes everything so much easier somehow. anyways i don’t really like this but i needed to post smt for him after s2 so!

One year ago, you and Cha Hyunsu would’ve been sitting near the entrance of Green Home apartments, and he would be listening to you talk. One year ago, you would’ve firmly believed that by now, the world would’ve been restored to some kind of peace. It had, in a way, but certainly not in the one your past self would have hoped for. And certainly not the one Hyunsu would’ve wanted for the two of you.

Nevertheless, you remained grateful through everything— As much as you could manage. The shelter was as organized as possible and conflict was a surprisingly rare occurence. Things were alright. As long as you didn’t give time for the grief and terror to catch up to you.

But things couldn’t be calm forever. Especially not in the current state of your world.

When Eunyu disappeared with that man from the military, it only took a day before you grew restless enough to depart from the stadium. After all, Eunyu was the closest thing to a friend you had here, at this point. It only felt right to try and find her. And you did, surprisingly, along with a few familiar faces and an unknown one.

You didn’t expect for the evening you found your friend again to be the very same you would see the person you had considered closest to you at Green Home for the first time in… Over a year.

“Finally asleep.” you sighed quietly, watching Eunyu get the rest her body had probably been begging for. It was difficult to convince her you would stand watch and wait for your friend to wake up in her stead, but her exhaustion made her stop arguing eventually.

You turned towards the room he was in.

Cha Hyunsu.

You crossed your arms and sighed. One year without a single trace of him anywhere. And now he… Just reappears? You wanted to be surprised, but part of you really wasn’t. You were angry, just a little— Spending all this time telling yourself he was gone, only for him to come back as if nothing happened felt like a slap to the face. Still, you couldn’t blame him. Yet. You had no idea what happened to him during that time span.

You felt relieved, if anything.

After some hesitation, you walked over to the glass door. Your hand settled on the handle, pushing it open, before your eyes widened. Hyunsu was sitting on the hospital bed, stretching his neck quietly, not at all perturbed by anything. Hell, he even seemed peaceful.

More peaceful than you’d ever seen him.

You stepped inside quietly and let the door close behind you. Hyunsu continued to move his head, slowly, as if trying to relax, and didn’t acknowledge your presence. His shoulder was bloodstained, still, and his hoodie had cuts here and there. Messy as he appeared, this was your friend from Green Home, there was no denying it. You hadn’t even dared hope he could still be alive, after all this time. You couldn’t give your heart such a high possibility of suffering if he turned out to be gone.

And now he was here. So calm.

He opened his eyes with a soft sigh, before turning his gaze to you. “Finally decided to talk to me?” he asked. His tone was different. Too different. This did not feel like the kind of change that happened in a year. He smiled a little at your silence, tilting his head curiously. “No? Do you need more time? That would be too bad.”

He hopped off the bed with a huff and slowly walked over to you. The closer he got, the clearer it became that his eye color was different. Long gone was the blank, dark brown gaze that looked back at you when you two would talk— Replaced by a vibrant sky blue. A stark contrast from what you were used to, as was everything else about him, apparently. Be it his tone or his mannerisms, it all felt deeply wrong, like it wasn’t him at all. You furrowed your eyebrows but stood still, letting him walk to the very edge of your personal space.

“I’ve been waiting to see you for such a long while.”

“Huh?”

Hyunsu’s eyes widened a little before he grinned. This wasn’t … Him. Not exactly, at least. Not the one you talked to so much. But special-cases, or MH, essentially coexisted in one body. The monster forms around a person’s strongest desire, or whatever it was that scientist at the shelter said.

So perhaps, all the times you and Hyunsu had talked in the past had also been conversations that this side of him had been listening to.

A bit scary. You couldn’t really focus on that, though. You took a deep breath and looked at him.

“Is he well?”

He clicked his tongue, expression growing sour. “He’s fine. Let him get some rest. He’s tired.”

You nodded softly, gaze averting. That sounded fine enough to you. He was right, too, earlier— You had been avoiding talking to him since you met again. With the excuse of focusing on Yikyung and scavenging through the hospital, you had plenty of reasons to act as if you weren’t seeing the person you cared the most for after a whole entire year of thinking he was dead.

But you did feel his gaze on you the whole time. It was heavy, and remorseful. You’d planned to talk to him— In fact, that’s why you decided to come over to the room he was in. You hadn’t expected things to turn out this way, however. Seems like you couldn’t talk to your friend, yet.

“It’s nice to know you care, though.” he hummed, gaze never leaving your face. “He thinks about you so much, too.”

You looked back up at him. If this was the so-called monster part of Hyunsu, then what was his deal? A lot of questions about this situation flooded your head. “What are you playing at?”

He chuckled softly, before backing up just enough to hold up his hands in an innocent gesture. “Nothing as evil as you probably think.” he said, voice steady. “I just wanted us to talk. Just us.”

“Huh.”

“You see, your Hyunsu has an interest in you.” he said, tilting his head slowly. It felt as if he was analyzing you. It was a bit unsettling, but you didn’t bother breaking eye contact this time. “But I do, too. I’d say maybe… Even more than him?” his grin widened at his own words.

“I find it hard to believe you care about people.”

“And yet.” he scoffed, expression dropping to a blank one, seemingly annoyed. He dropped his arms to his sides and sighed. “We decided to work together. Couldn’t have him die on me, it wouldn’t be nice for anyone involved.”

You decided this Hyunsu seemed to mean it when he said they made a deal, just about as much as when he said he had an interest in you. So placing your trust in his bloodied hands for the time being, you tried to be less on guard. He wouldn’t kill you, or most importantly, Hyunsu. That was enough for now.

“Okay.” you sighed, crossing your arms. “So you want to talk?”

He smiled a little. “Yes.” he stated, before taking a step towards you. Only this time, he didn’t bother keeping a safe distance. His face was a touch too close to yours. “I’ve wanted to for a while.”

“You…” you paused for a moment, thinking. “Do you usually go around talking to people while getting so close to them?”

“I don’t go around talking to people.” he mocked your tone before scoffing, a grin pulling at his lips. He brought a hand up to your face, holding your cheek firmly. His focus turned to his hand, eyes narrowing in its direction. You felt his fingers loosen a little, as if he was trying to control how tightly he was holding you.

Which he was. Now it felt gentle. Almost unfitting. Not only that but the Hyunsu you knew was never this comfortable with anything close to physical affection. It felt so out of place.

“Does it bother you?” he whispered, eyes flitting over to meet yours again. He moved in closer, just enough for your noses to touch. He seemed to be having fun switching between looking at your eyes and at your lips. “Am I too close?”

Before you could think of a way to answer, you froze. The unfamiliar color in Hyunsu’s eyes dissipated, the cocky expression you were almost beginning to get used to replaced by a soft, almost startled one. His voice, much quieter now, whispered your name. Your eyes widened and you sighed in something akin to relief.

“Hyunsu.” you breathed out. The latter looked at you with a stunned look, struggling to find anything to say for a while. He looked into your eyes like he was making sure you were okay— Making sure you were really alive. His thumb moved back and forth softly over the skin of your cheek, his gaze scanning you in an almost panicked manner. He sighed shakily, before he brought your face into his shoulder. He seemed to be almost trembling.

“I’m sorry.” he exhaled, wrapping his other arm around your shoulders hesitantly. Still terrible at hugging. You’d missed those awkward displays of affection so much. “I… I’m sorry, it’s been… A very long time.”

“God, you’re so cruel, Cha Hyunsu.”

He tilted his head down into your neck. Now you felt his tears on your skin. He really hasn’t changed, you thought. It was obvious when he came running for help when Yikyung was badly injured, when he did everything to help her and went all the way to look for that kid— Cha Hyunsu hadn’t changed.

“I’m—”

“Quit apologizing.” you huffed, holding him tightly. “I missed you, too.”

Hyunsu sighed quietly, tightening his hold on you a little. He was relieved to finally have you with him again, but he couldn’t shake off his worries.

“You talked to… Him? Right?”

“I did.” you said, pulling away enough to look at him. The concern on his features was undeniable. “And it went fine. It’s okay.”

Hyunsu’s frown deepened. “I don’t know if it’s alright. Me staying… So close to you.”

“Don’t even think about disappearing on me again.” you warned, eyes widening. “I don’t care about any reason you give me— Don’t leave again.”

The boy sighed, averting his gaze for a moment, before slowly bringing it back to you.

“I won’t.” he assured, “I won’t leave you again.”

He closed his eyes and pulled you into another hug. He had to believe his existence on its own wouldn’t cause more problems for you to deal with. He had to trust that even if it did, you meant it when you said you didn’t mind. He knew you did. You always meant it.

He opened his eyes and looked at his reflection in the glass door just a bit further away. Seeing you in his arms should have been reassuring. But the blue hue of one of his eyes and the nagging voice in his head seemed to be laughing at his naivety. He pressed his eyes shut again and buried his face in your shoulder.

This is our priority, now. (I know.) No one else comes first. (I know.) Don’t let them get hurt.

I won’t.

Seo Moon-jo:

Relationship -

When you first met Moon-jo, he was normal.

He didn’t appear to be psycho.

He always would take you out to dinner

Always paying

Giving you absolutely anything you could ask for

It was all green flags.

Oh how wrong you were.

Moon-jo would be normal, never letting you see his true self until he knew you would never leave

Of course he knew you would never leave him because he had ways to make you stay

You will never leave him.

Ever.

He would always bring you flowers

Buy you little snacks

Visit you at work

He’d be the embodiment of the perfect boyfriend.

All of his spare time would be spent watching you to make sure you were okay

If anyone dared to flirt with or even talk to you, he would not be happy

They’d feel sorry

He’d make sure they did

If you ever bring him along to your work dinners or other outings with friends, he would be sure to make himself even more perfect than he acted around you

No one could ever suspect him

No one should have any reason to think he would even try to hurt you

Because he wouldn’t.

Unless you try to leave of course.

But that’s crazy!

You love him.

There were a few red flags here and there, but nothing major.

He would never get mad at you.

Literally never.

You could call him the most horrible names and hit him if you wanted, but he’d truly never get mad.

He’d just let you do what you need to do and let you apologize after

He wouldn’t bring you around the boarding house often, only sometimes

Even though he knew everyone in the boarding house was scared of him and would never do anything to you in fear of the kind of retaliation they would face, he still didn’t like them

Usually you two were always out on dates (especially when the twins would clean up his messes for him), or at your apartment

I definitely see him as the type to put cameras in your house - just to make sure you’re safe of course.

No other reason

Obsession -

He’d be obsessed with you from the very moment he first laid his eyes on you

Everything did was for you

And he was lucky enough that your brother just happened to move in next to him so he saw you as often as your brother allowed you to visit him (which didn’t happen a lot since Jong-woo is very protective of you and didn’t trust the guys there)

He’d make sure to become friends with your brother so he could gain his trust which would cause him to lower his guard and let him have you

If he so much as saw someone flirting with you, they were dead

But it’s okay because he did it for love

Or if the person who flirted with you was one of his patients, he’d make sure they felt extra pain during their appointment

Yoon Jong-woo:

Relationship -

Jong-woo would treat you right!

Always taking care of you and you doing the same in return

Unlike Ji-eun, you’d believe him about what was going on in the boarding house and offer to let him stay at your place - which you would’ve tried to do since the beginning, but he was stubborn

He would turn your offer down again, but after a few days he’d ask to move in

Truthfully, he would’ve never gotten into the mess that occurred in the show since he left early on

He’d take you on dates as many times as he could

He’d never go crazy because you would take care of him when things got rough

You’d even visit him at work and bring him food or even pick him up so you could go home together

You two are practically a married couple

Laughing together

Smiling together

Happy together

A picture of the two of you are his lock screen and his computer screen

He even has a picture of you on his desk

Since Jong-woo is more timid in the beginning, you gladly stand up for him and tell his boss to leave him alone

If the events of the show do occur and Moon-jo kidnaps you, all hell would break loose

He’d drop absolutely everything to save you and make sure you are safe

He’d move heaven and earth for you

Nothing is more important than you

He’d probably take you to fairs and win you any prizes you want

There’s no guarantee he’ll win, but if he can make you smile and give you a good time, that’s all he needs

He’ll want to marry you

He probably already bought the ring and is holding onto it

He knows you’re all he’ll ever need

He’d be so cuddly

Loving to have you with him

Covering your face with kisses

Always holding your hand and swinging them whenever you walk together

He just can’t get enough of you

You’re like his charger, never failing to fill him up with energy

Jong-woo wouldn’t do anything too crazy

At least not in the beginning

At first it would just be him trying to catch a glimpse of you in crossing you

Then he’d somehow start following you

Then somehow he learned your entire schedule

He plans “accidental” bumps in the street

He’d be the most perfect boyfriend

You two would have met while he was busking around the area, you’d always sit and listen to him rap

And of course you’d say yes

He’d take you to restaurants, arcades, anything

He’d grow comfortable with you so quick

He can’t imagine a life without you

You’d only get to see the boarding house one time when you help him get home after a night of drinking (you weren’t as intoxicated as him since you only had a few drinks)

You’d get a bad vibe from those living there, not liking how they stared and stalked

You wouldn’t even want to leave your boyfriend there, but the tall, pale man would reassure you that he’s fine

So you’d leave him

Only for the night

The next day you insist he move in with you

At first he’d deny it, saying he doesn’t have the money to split rent with you, but you’d reassure him not to worry about it, just begged him to to go back there

Once he sees how serious you are, he listens

(I refuse to let him die, he didn’t deserve it)

So he lived

He’d get along well with your family

They’d take him in as their own

He’d love to cuddle you

Holding you in his arms

You are his home

You are his comfort

You’d fully support his music career and he’d even become famous after a few years

You’d be his biggest support system

Going to every rehearsal

Obsession -

Seok-yoon wouldn’t be the creepy type of obsessive

It’d be like a puppy love type scenario

If anything I feel like it would be obvious he’s trying to follow you

For instance, he’ll always busk in areas he knows you’ll be (and luckily for him, they were all high traffic areas so it was a win-win)

Usually he busks near your workplace, knowing when you’ll be there

He’ll always send you a wink to let you know he’s there for you

He’d even write songs about you, making sure you knew they were only for you

Everytime he would sing, it’d be for you

No one else.

You are his world

The only one he needs

And one day he swore you’d be his.

Sometimes he would walk you home if you lived nearby

You had no reason not to trust him

I mean if it were anyone except for Seok-yoon, you’d be running for the hills

But how could you say no to him

He was just too sweet

Yoo Ki-hyeok:

You two would’ve met before the brainwashing

He was happy, full of hope

He’d take you out on dates whenever he could

Of course money was tight, but neither of you minded the simple dates like walks in the park

You’d try to get him to leave there and ask him to live with you but he couldn’t

He didn’t have the money yet and he didn’t want to disappoint you

Of course he would stay a few nights in your apartment

He was never on edge when he slept with you

He felt comfortable

He managed to let down his guard

Moon-jo would try to convince him to do things, offering money as a reward since he knew that’s what he needed

At first he would turn it down, not trusting Moon-jo’s motives, but when he was starving and scared to dip into his money, he finally began to do a few jobs

Once he got the money, he allowed himself to look for new apartments together, visiting them in your spare time

He’d take you to fancy cafes, take you shopping

Whatever you wanted to do

Obsession -

He has a very calm persona which would deter others

But not you

You didn’t know why, but that little voice that never failed to tell you to run from danger, always told you to do the opposite around him

If a guy ever approached you in a flirtatious manner, he’d fantasize about their murder

Wanting nothing but to watch them suffer a terrible death for even trying to steal his person

Ki-hyeok doesn't leave the boarding house all that much, but when he does

He only looks for you

It’s very easy to know where you are

Anywhere you went, he was also there

You have the same schedule everyday

Very predictable

He always plays it off as a simple coincidence though, claiming you two were just so in sync

And you always believed it

He likes to go on walks around your job establishment when he knows you’re working

He likes to walk around your apartment, knowing when you’re there

He likes to send you little gifts to your work - he doesn't want to seem creepy sending things to your home

You’d think he was crazy

He knows you appreciate the little gifts and flowers because he follows behind you on you way home, hearing you walk to your best friend about the sweet gift you got

He always sends them randomly so you won’t suspect him

And the notes are always sweet so he doesn’t creep you out

If someone were to take credit of his gifts, just know that they’ll turn up dead

No one loves you like he does

No one

If you ever go on dates, Ki-hyeok will not like it

But it’s not your fault, you haven’t met him yet, so you seem to believe you haven’t met your true match yet

Don’t worry

He understands

But the other guy on the other hand

How dare he try to steal another man’s s/o?

Who does he think he is?

It’s obvious you’re taken

You just may not know it yet

You won’t be getting any messages or calls returned from your date

The second they got into their cars, they were dead

But you don’t find out until years later

When he finally manages to start dating you and you think all is well

Studying

“Baby.” It was by the third time that his finger poked at her cheek that she had to finally look up.

“You said you’d let me study.” She complained.

He ignored it. “Did you know you pout when you’re focused?”

“Yes, actually, I do know that.”

“It’s cute.”

“Maybe you should let me be focused, then.” She said. “So you can look at it for longer.”

“Of course, of course.” He waved his hands. “Pretend I’m not even here.”

A few minutes, then his hand made its way over to hers, fingers curling around it. “Seojun.” She whined. “I have a test.”

“I’m not stopping you from studying.” He replied, off handedly. “You don’t need both of them.”

“Don’t you have to study?”

“I do.” He nodded. “But it’s boring.”

“I know, but you still have to do it.”

“How can I? You’re over there, pouting over your notes and looking all focused.” He grinned. “Do you have any idea how cute that is?”

“Flattery will get you nowhere.” She deadpanned, pulling her hand out of his to use it to point towards his own manual. “Study.”

“If only I had some motivation.” He sighed with his eyes closed. “I am but a simple man, you know?” He tilted his head and opened one eye to look at her.

“Actually do some studying.” She argued. “And I’ll think about it.”

“Fine.” He dragged out the last syllable like a child giving up. “I’ll hold you to that.”

And so she turned her attention back down, towards her exercises for the test she had in just a couple of days, before it was dragged back to him.

He pouted, too, she noticed with a fond smile. And she had to admit it was pretty cute.

And for a moment she could just look at him. Like the time back in the tent when he’d been half asleep.

She didn’t know then she would love him like this.

She noticed more, too. The bags under his eyes. The tiredness in his expression that he hid with a smile and bright mood.

He didn’t say how tired he was, often. How overwhelmed he must be at trying to juggle university with his part time and the modelling on top of that.

And he didn’t need to say it, because she knew. It tugged at her heartstrings and she wished she could just do more. To help him. To take care of him.

It must be heavy, to carry all that responsibility. She wanted to take it away from him.

And in all of that, he still managed to make time for her, somehow. People asked her how she had time for all her activities, when in reality he was the one really making each second count.

Guilt tugged at her. Was he sleeping enough? Was he eating well? She hadn’t even been trying to make sure he did.

She should do better. She would do better.

“You’re staring.” He complained without looking at her, though there was a little smile quirking up his lip. “I’m trying to focus.”

“Sorry,” She answered, leaning forward to plant a kiss on his cheek before returning to her own work and leaving him with a happy smile on his face.
