Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
It’s been a long time since I wrote anything, or have really tried to put thoughts together. There are many other issues that accompany FASD – body pain and impulse control to name two of a long list.

I received an advance copy of this book, as part of the launch team.
Here’s my review.
“People lose their way when they lose their why” – Michael Hyatt
Stay focused on today’s stage and where your children are right now. P 77
As he outlines the keys. Mike does an excellent job of weaving the changes in our children and how to use our influence with them.

Winning The Heart Of Your Child
Winning The Heart Of Your Child
I’m thrilled and honoured to be part of the launch party team for “Winning The Heart Of Your Child” by Mike Berry.
It offers hope and encouragement for parents who feel they have lost hope that they can influence their children in the face of conflicting values in the world.
It launches on February 5, and can be preordered from leading retailers. There are great preorder bonuses available as well.

Sudden change (or maybe not)
We started out on our journey toward adoption about 15 years ago.
Our journey shifted toward fostering when a baby (now our son) became available, but he wasn’t available for adoption yet. We were presented with the option of foster to adopt. Why not, we thought.
Fast forward about 2 years, and we are looking at expanding our family again. We waited to get our home study updated so we could be…

Another year has gone and a new one has come
Where did 2016 go?
2016 seems to have been notable in particular for the number of celebrities who have passed on.
David Bowie.
Prince.
Leonard Cohen.
Carrie Fisher. Closely followed by her mother, Dennis Reynolds
Ultimately, no one can escape death. Some pass on early. Others have a long life.
We have no control over what happens to us in life. We can control how we react to it.
Forgiveness…

Open adoption can be interesting
Our annual open adoption Christmas party was on Sunday afternoon.
We picked up Reid’s birth mother, her husband, and her oldest daughter. Following logic, also his half sister. We last saw her over five years ago. She’s about four months older than Tate, but a school year ahead. We immediately noticed that his birth mother’s hair was dyed blue.
It’s hosted by our local Children’s Aid to allow…

Observations in Adoption Month
Adoption is a life changing experience, both for the adoptive parents and adopted child.
Adoption is romanticized in the media. They don’t necessarily tell the whole story, along with the bumps and warts that are come along with real life.
They don’t necessarily know about the challenges that can be part of the journey, especially when adopting from foster care.
To be fully aware of the…

What can I learn from my son about persistence
What can I learn from my son about persistence
Our youngest son is six, but resembles a three year old in many ways
After a particularly long day, I am thinking back about positives in some challenging, even irritating moments.
Pursue what you love to do, no matter what. He is an outdoor kid. He loves to go biking. It felt like he asked about 10,00 times if we could go biking. No matter how many times he as told no, or later, he kept on…

If we're honest......
If we’re honest……
Secrets can hold a great deal of power, if we let them. There are good secrets, like presents and surprises.  These secrets are usually kept for a short period of time, and because they are for a good purpose. The secrets that have power tend to be darker, the things that we don’t want known from our past. People go to great lengths to keep things quiet and out of sight. There are some things…

Summer goes by...
Summer goes by…
We’ve had some pretty hot weather over the past week or so.
It’s been uncomfortable at times, but this the type of weather we wait all winter for.
It’s really hard to believe that July is half gone.
Before we know it, it will be September and back to school time.
Until then, we just have to enjoy the weather.

Your child doesn't look like they have FASD ....
Your child doesn’t look like they have FASD ….
So far, we haven’t run into any major problems with people in the school system having an issue getting FASD and the accommodations needed that are spelled out in the IEP. Until recently. But that’s another story ….. Here’s a link to a post on confessionsofanadoptiveparent.com by Mike Berry,  Your child doesn’t look like they have FASD. This post summarizes many things we have experienced, or…
