OK arifureta post time . I know the steps of the heros journey are bullshit but bear with me. It's easy to read arifureta as a case of rejecting the heros journey outright, bc he rejects both the quest he was summoned for and the quest set by the mavericks, but that would be a misunderstanding of the concept of the heros journey. His journey is to get back home. But, according to the last step of the heros journey, his journey will have irreversibly changed him and he will no longer fit in at the home he was fighting for. This is why I think the proper reading is as a mitigation of the heros journey. I've talked a number of times about aiko-sensei and her role as a role model for being properly human (a teacher, even, how fitting) but now that I've read the first ln it's clear that the theme of mitigating the damage done to hajime by the journey is present from the start. So the premise of the story is that Hajime sucks and has no overpowered abilities and he's left for dead far below the deepest part of the dungeon anyone's ever been to, surrounded by creatures that can kill him instantly. There's no way back to, so the only option is to go down. In order to survive this, he has to abandon his humanity and live in survival mode, killing anything that gets in the his way without really asking questions. This, obviously, is not the way a Japanese citizen can go about their daily life, but he's not really thinking about that yet because it's fuckin. Extreme survival time. But while the anime doesn't really touch on this, the light novel stresses that the first thing tying him to what little remains of his humanity is his relationship with Yue. She may not be a model for life in a civilized world, but her presence keeps him from going full feral. And I think it's going to be interesting to read the rest of the novels through this lens of building bonds with others to mitigate the damage of a hero's journey. I purposely didn't put any paragraph breaks here bc I don't want anyone to accidentally feel compelled to read my ramblings about this random isekai I like and read way too much into. Love u
Do you like sitting in on boring meetings? If so, you'll love That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 3 Episode 52. This is what the anime is all about. How does anyone think this is good?
Found this in the deepest reaches of my drafts folder. I stand by these thoughts 1000%.
Text reads:
Roberto wasn’t a coward.
I’m not even sure he was cautious. Not really.
All his griping and warnings about how reporters don’t need to place themselves in danger? He wasn’t concerned about himself. He was trying to protect Meryl. Alone, I bet he would've stayed / rushed in, all those times he was dragging Meryl away.
