Time for another colorblind experiment, where I take one of my original pieces of work and try to match the colors without using the eyedropper tool or RGB codes. Unlike past attempts, I actually feel pretty confident with this one... which probably means I did terribly. I won't know, though, until someone tells me!
The subject is Keyleth, the kind-hearted if somewhat naive druid from “Critical Role” and “The Legend of Vox Machina.”

It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these, but I had an urge to give another a shot. If you look at the last post to this blog, you can tell that I might have improved a little bit.
Hopefully the resolution is decent enough to let some of the smaller details come across... If not, I’ll tweak things in the future.

This is my first off-color project in a while, so I decided to go with one of my personal favorite subjects -- Jean Grey, aka Phoenix, from the X-Men. I used a few different sources to guide my color choices, but the main one was Artgerm’s picture there on the left.
As I worked on this, I assumed her skin tone would be too grey and that the gold areas could wind up anywhere, but I’ve been told the color choices weren’t too bad (the gold is a bit too green, the beta-reviewers have told me). I did not separately select the base colors and the shadows/highlights -- once I selected the base colors, I raised or lowered their values to get the desired highlight result.
Maybe some day I’ll branch into off-color-arting the shadows, too.
In the meantime, any commentary or thoughts are welcome! Suggestions for future subjects are welcome as well -- maybe I’ll aim for some blues and yellows since I seemed to do okay with the red and green this time. Unless my friends were just being nice to me and lied about how well I did.

Back into the game...
It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Well, I got distracted from this project as I got into trying to become a better artist in my own right, rather than just tracing and manipulating other people’s images. Recently I realized that I have gotten at least confident enough in what I do to not be completely embarrassed by it, so now it’s just a matter of me taking the time to color in images I’d want to draw anyway -- everybody wins.
I’m not sure how often I’ll have something new here, but it should definitely be more often than it has been.

So this is how I try to get shading done when I color pictures. In some areas, I can’t even tell where the shadows are – I’m just choosing a color value to use and taking it on faith that everyone else can see the difference. So to make sure the shading is smooth, I have to turn off the underlayer. Sometimes it is, other times I completely miss. #art #drawing #colorblind #DragonAgeInquisition #cullen #hopeigotitright #fingerscrossed #colorblindart

My apologies for the lack of new content lately, but I’ve been distracted by working on my own pieces for a while (kman75.tumblr.com). I did start on a Ms. Marvel/Wolverine picture, though, so hopefully that’ll get done in the near future.

Very interested by this -- I'd assume relearning colors would be required...

Given the dominance green and yellow played in my other experiments, I decided to try to hit the entire rainbow this time, and, thus, I bring you the cast of Disney’s Big Hero 6 (Wasabi, Go Go, Baymax, Hiro, Honey Lemon, and Fred).
I’m going to say right out of the gate that I kind of cheated when it comes to Wasabi -- I’m pretty sure in the movie he uses the line, “Green blades of fury!,” which let me know right away that my assumption up until that point that they (and his costume) were blue was wrong.
Obviously I left off a lot of the minor costume details, and did not even attempt to get the gradients of the various colors caused by shading and lighting. I only have so much time and, frankly, talent. So I aimed to get the general gist of the various pieces. Also, the original picture I worked off was pretty small, so there were some colors I couldn't even try to match (I used a different picture to try to get Honey Lemon’s eyes, however incorrect they may be).
This one was pretty fun to do. If it has any value, I might throw some more animated movie stills into the mic of comic experiments. Let me know if this worked as well as the others, or whether the shading and lighting makes the variance in original colors too great for this to come off well.
(Characters and their appearances belong to Disney and Marvel.)

I've often wondered whether having one's colorblindness fixed would result in having to relearn all of the colors they've seen. Maybe we'll find out in a few years?

Bruce Timm’s Supergirl — Based on the Meggan pictures, I’m assuming her hair is actually green in my version, but, seriously, it does look yellow/blonde to me.
Timm seems to have used colored pencils in his work, and that was, unfortunately, a style I am not adept enough Painter X3 yet to duplicate. So mine is a mix of colored pencils and acrylics. I didn’t pay much attention to shading or the clouds because, for the most part, it’d either just be picking white or a particular shade of grey (which even I can get right) or mind-numbingly tedious (and, given my inability to duplicate his exact medium, it probably wouldn’t look right anyway).
So, if you’re so inclined, let me know what you think. I promise not to wince.

I’m colorblind. There it is, I said it. I’ve been holding it back for years, before I even knew I wanted to be a photographer and it feels good to put it out there. I’ve told exactly two photographers...

The new Batgirl of Burnside, give or take several shades of what may or may not be the correct colors.
I’d originally set out to do a mini-tribute to Gail Simone’s run of Batgirl, since she’s the reason I started reading the book, but her version’s costume didn’t provide enough color variation to make this experiment interesting. So I went with the new look, designed and drawn by Cameron Stewart and Babs Tarr. I have a feeling the main blue may need a touch more red to it, but this was the shade I felt most confident about. I also have a feeling that, instead of blonde highlights, her hair has probably taken on a green sheen in the light of the camera flash in my version — that definitely seems to be a weak point for me. But even knowing it’s probably actually green, the colors still look comparable to me.
You’ll note I learned my lesson from the last Meggan picture and did not include the extremely detailed background. It all looked to be various shades of the same blue-grey(?) to me, anyway, so… Not much to be learned from that.
On a literary note, I can’t recommend The New 52 Batgirl issues 1-34 enough. Here’s hoping issues 35 and onward keep up the hot streak…
(Update since this was written 6 months ago: The new team is doing well. A completely different tone, but it works.)

Here’s another of Meggan that I just finished tonight. The grass looked blue to me, though I have to imagine it’s some form of green. And, clearly, I got very lazy toward the end in regard to the tree and its leaves… A lesson has been learned here, and it is to stick to simple figures. But I’ve always liked this depiction of Meggan, and I wanted to give it a shot.

So, At Least There's This...
"Color blindness is usually classified as a mild disability, however there are occasional circumstances where it can give an advantage. Some studies conclude that color blind people are better at penetrating certain color camouflages. Such findings may give an evolutionary reason for the high prevalence of red–green color blindness. There is also a study suggesting that people with some types of color blindness can distinguish colors that people with normal color vision are not able to distinguish."

Personally, I’d prefer to just be able to tell when I’m about to accidentally buy a pink shirt.
