Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in India
India as a country has always been conventional in its values. Gender inequality has always been rampant in the country often wearing the guise of traditional virtues. India needs to get rid of discriminatory attitudes towards its female population. Gender equality helps in the development of a country. India overall has come a long way in accomplishing great things, however, still has a lot to cover in the areas of women empowerment and gender equality.
The Indian constitution grants equal rights to all Indian citizens irrespective of their genders. Despite this women get discriminated against in social and professional spaces. It affects their mental health and overall social well-being. Indian laws regarding adultery, dowry and social welfare have women’s safety at heart. Despite this discriminatory practices occur at an alarmingly high rate.
If India wants to achieve goals of development, achieving gender equality is a prerequisite.
What is Gender Equality?
Gender is a term that determines whether a person is biologically male or female. In the majority of communities, this difference is not merely biological or physical - it extends across various aspects of life. Your gender determines different expectations society has of you w.r.t how you behave, dress, or work. Gender, therefore, is different from sex. It is cultural and social rather than being just biological.
As per UNICEF, gender equality means that men, women, boys, and girls should enjoy the same rights, resources, liberties, opportunities, and protections. In India, gender equality is a fundamental right guaranteed by the constitution of India.
Difference between Gender equality, equity, and women’s empowerment
Gender equity means being fair to women. Women from an early age face social, biological, and cultural disadvantages hampering their overall progress. Hence, measures and strategies should be available for women to compensate for social and traditional disadvantages. Gender equity is the path to gender equality.
Gender equality fosters an environment where women along with men can enjoy opportunities, socially valued goods, and rewards. This in turn leads to women's empowerment. The main focus of empowering women is giving them the authority to manage their lives and redressing the existing imbalances.
A lot of time gender equality gets confused with the notion that women and men are the same. Gender equality means that women should have equal access to opportunities and resources. Women are entitled to autonomy that is neither restricted nor dependent on any gender biases. When women are empowered they can make decisions on personal and public levels thus becoming equal participants in a productive life.
Importance of gender equality and its status in India
Gender equality is a prerequisite for achieving sustainable development in India. It is linked with realizing human rights. Within the national development strategies, gender equality in India is the need of the hour. It empowers women to make decisions impacting their overall health.
Most developed countries in the world treat their women in a fair manner.
India has one of the highest sex discrimination at birth levels. As per the Lancet study, 2018, around 239,000 girls die each year ascribed to gender discrimination in India. Gender-based discrimination does not only prevent girls from being born but also it may contribute to the deaths of those who are born. It was one of the first reports to depict the number of avoidable deaths among girls aged below 5 years across 640 districts.
Gender equity not only means ensuring equal rights to education, political representation, and employment, but also the right to care, vaccination, nutrition, and healthcare. Unfortunately, girls from underprivileged backgrounds get denied these rights and thereby are susceptible to developing health complications. Thus, India has one of the most depressing gender ratios in the world.
Despite India's GDP growing at a steady rate, there has been an alarming decline in female labor participation. There has been a rise in crime against women. The dowry violence remains perpetual despite the government coming up with stringent laws.
India ranked 112th among 153 countries in the annual Global Gender Gap Index, 2020. In 2006, India ranked 98th whereas last year it ranked 108th. In 2020, it slipped below countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and China.
Representation of women in cinema and TV
Women's representation in cinema and TV has always been marred ascribed to gender biases and discrimination. Women are either shown as sexual objects or as subdued traditional being incapable of making their decisions.
Images on TV and cinema have shown women through the lenses of gender roles. From selling food products to promoting kitchen appliances, commercials have suggested that a woman’s place belongs in the kitchen.
The progress has been made but there is still a long way to go. The Hindi film industry has come up with a few women-centric films depicting women as independent and empowered characters. TVC has also shown initiative by coming up with innovative commercial campaigns.
One such campaign was recently launched by Bail Kolhu - a flagship product for the brand Nourish by the company BL Agro. The campaign has a catchy phrase #rasodemeinmardhai. The TVC shows three well-accomplished actors cooking and serving meals to their families. The concept is stereotype-shattering in many ways. For the first time, three leading actors are shown cooking in the kitchen promoting a food commodity. With initiatives like these, the country seems to be headed on the right path, however, a lot needs to be done to accomplish gender equality in India.
