re-reading the earlier upd8 of hs2...has anyone complained about john (probably)? because i was going to but then i realised that his whiny-out of touch-oblivious- man child-overall just annoying *thing* is actually a lot less annoying than it is relatable. specifically re-reading this detail:

in combination with his over-the-top attachment to the past & inability to interact with the present his character felt like a punch to the gut. its funny because i first read this around 2 years ago and I dont remember john's monologue at ALL or even the tragedy of his character. i think its because I had just started college i was feeling SECURE as hell. now after getting my degree, moving to a new city, not having a job and being away from everything/everyone i know...john's little speech but also John's whole character in hs2(the godtier pyjamas he's grown out of? his dads burnt down house?! how no one takes him seriously??) suddenly speaks to me. that feeling of just being too slow for the world, of you just limping along while everyone zooms past.

i guess part of my point is that there are specific times for specific characters and character arcs? and sometimes - just sometimes- when you dont like it, it really is because you didnt get it :')

not done with the upd8 yet, but terezi breaks my heart. all anime addiction jokes aside, the description of isolation, of being alone with the robot & madman father daughter duo is heartbreaking. always saw her as somewhat immune to despair through her wackiness & intensity as a character but these first interactions between her and the strilondes as well as her moral (or mortal??) dilemma are just so so sad.

the kanaya-dave dynamic i have been dreaming of! gentle gentle friends :')

in the light of homestuck being something of a "coming of age" story I guess those two reflect how everyone should sort of reevaluate their guardians after childhood? sometimes it is to realise that they tried their best, sometimes it is to realise that they are a threat to your well-being.

(coming from a wholesome family, rose's arc always spoke to me a lot. suddenly understanding that your parents are not plotting against you, laughing about you or trying to belittle you was a pretty big step in growing up for me tbh.)

anyways, another beautiful narrative symmetry in that silly comic

Its kinda interesting how a big part of Dave’s arcs post act 5 is recognizing that his Bro was a shitty abusive guardians where as a big part of Rose’s arc post act 5 was recognizing that her mother wasn’t this super passive aggressive woman constantly belittling her but was legit just trying to reach out to her daughter. Mom Lalonde isn’t perfect of course she was a drunk after all. I just think it’s interesting how Rose and Dave’s relationships with their guardians contrast each other over the course of the comic.

WRITERS

I know it sounds really cool to say a character’s voice ‘dropped an octave.’ Octave is a cool word. But it is a HUGE drop. Imagine going from your normal speaking voice to almost the lowest note you can hit. Like, Optimus Prime with a sore throat kinda voice. THAT is what it sounds like when most people lower their speaking voice an octave.

This is a plea my fellow writers. I humbly offer “dropped to its lowest register” in its stead. Still cool sounding. Doesn’t conjure the thought of characters with demon hell voice. Readers who also know music will clamor at your feet in appreciation. It’s a win all around
