I would choose Maria Bertram Rushworth.
I would love to put it in a brutally repressive theocratic society where it is a man's job to run things and a woman's job to die in childbirth.
The Crawfords would be from a decadent, more progressive society who come to Mansfield on a lark as aid workers (socialite volunteering?), and they open Maria's eyes to the possibilities that life is more than she's been raised to know. And then they go home after a few months and she's still trapped there!
Her family has picked a husband for her from a respectable family because that's how marriages are arranged. She barely knows the guy and what she does know doesn't impress her but it's not like she's got any opportunity to meet another guy while stuck at home with her mother. At one point her father makes a token offer to break the engagement but she can't imagine that he really means it (and again: her only alternative is to stay trapped at home forever).
She marries and she hates it just as much as she feared she would. One day, she sees an opportunity to run away, and she does. She's later caught and returned but in her heart she never goes back.
Death to the patriarchy!
Hypothetical Scenario: You have been tasked with making a Jane Austen adaptation that centers around a tragedy. To do this, you decide to pick a side character from Austen's work and tell their story with them as main character (which can continue far past canon)
Feel free to get as creative as you want in the reblogs! I'd love to see what you all come up with

As a WRITER, um, you don't know how much I've already sunk into that story. I am going to post it and give myself a medal. There are tons of similar stories out there and that's okay. (I write fanfiction, that's kind of the point.)
As a READER, yes, I will read similar stories. I will binge. Do you know how many retellings of Cinderella I've read with the same ship? (Um, 4 or 5 in a row. I was in a fairy tale mood and they each had their own hook.) I will find an author I like and read my way through their oeuvre, and/or grab anything new that comes along with their name attached.
With stories, I'm allowed to luxuriate in my faves.
I have a question for the fanfic writers among you: How do you treat your work in progress when a very similar story is put out there? Do you go on writing - in the spirit that everything is unique in its own way - or do you abandon the piece - in the spirit of preventing 'superfluous' contributions?
Let's add a further wrench into the process by saying the recently published work by another author, so similar to your own, seems so much better written than your own (granted we are always our own worst critics). Where do you go with that?
Maybe this is a question for readers, too. Do you mind reading similar works/story lines?

Nutella Star
Tumblr media
File under: That Was Easy
We had a Mommy and Me brunch for my oldest kid and her besties. We had
Chai,
Mimosas (Mom-mosas and Grad-mosas),
Bacon,
Jalapeno cheddar scones,
Latkes with smoked salmon and crème fraiche,
Fruit salad,
Italian wedding cookies,
Monkey bread, and
Nutella Star
The latkes... Don't get me started on the latkes. But the Nutella Star was a) dead simple, b) visually appealing, and c) tasty (if you like Nutella).
A++, would make again!

I don't say it enough, so:
Shoutout to writers that write things I hate. Even though I won't be reading it, you are key to fandom diversity, and my fandom experience is improved by you being there!

I'm hosting a brunch this Sunday and am getting ready day by day. Yesterday I started the chai and it is sitting in the fridge right now, waiting. I've had two cups so far for quality control, which would be a problem if the recipe didn't make five quarts.
If you like chai and you have space to store the excess, give it a try.
Chai
3 cinnamon sticks
3 Tbs candied ginger or 4 tsps fresh chopped ginger
1 Tbs whole cloves
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
1 Tbs ground cardamom
2 quarts water
Start a day in advance. Put the cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cayenne, and cardamom in a large (8 QT is ideal) pot with 2 qts of water. Bring to boil. Turn off heat. Put on the lid and leave to steep overnight (or for at least 6 hours)
3 quarts water
1 c sugar
1/2 c unflavored black tea leaves
Add 3 quarts of fresh water. Bring to boil. Stir in the sugar and tea. Remove from heat. Let steep for 8 minutes, then strain.
To store: Pour into jars. Store in fridge for up to a month and freeze for probably up to 6 months. Add warmed milk to your cup when finally serving.
To serve immediately: add 1/3 gallon warmed milk. (With milk it will stay good in the fridge for about a week.)

Bit telling that for years and years evangelical religious extremists have been allowed on university campuses with their bullhorns and horrific imagery where they harass students into physical altercations and when students complain to the university’s administration they just shrug their shoulders citing freedom of speech but when those same tuition-paying students start protesting against war and genocide they call SWAT

WIP Wednesday
Another chapter of And Baby Makes Three posted!
Henry stared at the letter a little longer then turned to her. "You can't tame a leopard," he told her. Baby growled in agreement but ruined the effect by rubbing his head against Catherine's knees. "He seems quite tame to me," she observed. "Everything seems tame on a full stomach," opined Henry, his eyes fixed on the big cat.
