ok, yes. gōnghé, which is…an abbreviation for “industrial cooperative”? Like it was just a term for a worker-run organization? A specific U.S. marine stationed in China interpreted it as a motivational slogan about teamwork, and as a commander he got his whole battalion using it, and other U.S. marines found those guys so exhausting that it migrated into English slang with the meaning “overly enthusiastic”.
That’s…wild. What was I talking about?

anime gets a lot of mileage out of the fact that Japan is super green and super compact, lots of tiny rice paddies and tiny mountains and tiny forests and tiny rivers allowing plucky tweens to wander off and find adventure within minutes.
it’s hard to do that in Australia as you’re either stuck in suburbia or lost in an infinite brown scrub that stretches thousands of miles in every direction, and that’s just like one cattle station.
