Stargate wikia: McKay was given a "citrus allergy" because production staff knew a man who stated he was deathly allergic to citrus but would eat products containing hidden citrus several times. We don't actually know if McKay is really allergic or just lying.

Stargate fandom: McKay carries an epi-pen, Sheppard carries an epi-pen, one time there was cross contamination in the mess and McKay had to eat a hoarded MRE, and Sheppard yelled at the cooks. Everyone has epi-pen training. The team taste-tests food for McKay off world before they let him eat dinner provided by the locals.
