“Right. First and foremost…receiving.” Ukai says addressing everyone.
“If you can’t do that, you’re useless. We focus on that starting tomorrow!” Ukai continues.
“Yes, Coach! Thank you very much!”
“Don’t forget your cool-down stretches.”
“Okay, guys! Stretch out!” Daichi instructs.
“Yeah!!”
“Graaaah…” Ukai sighs.
“...? Are we really so terrible at receiving that it’s worth that heavy a sigh?” Takeda asks.
“Nah. Yeah it’s bad, but… that’s not what I was thinking.”
“...?”
“Back when I was a player and I was on the side that got picked to play, I never gave it any thought, but…when you’re on the side that does the picking as a coach…you can get stuck with some real tough decisions.” Ukai says while looking at Suga and Kageyama talking.
“...”
“Clean up now! Hurry!” Ukai yells.
“Yes, Coach.”
On your way to help clean, you see Hinata looking off into the distance. Just as you’re about to check on him, he speaks.
“Asahi-san!”
“? Yes?”
“I…I’m no Ace, but…I’m gonna be the Greatest Decoy…so that I can open up the way for the Ace!” Asahi looks at him surprised.
‘Way to go Hinata!’ You think proudly.
“Oh! Um! I still can’t do that without Kageyama’s setting though. But, uh…um…ah…uh…er…ummm…”
“Listen, um… It’s usually the wing spiker playing on the outside left that gets labeled the Ace, right? So that’d be me or Tanaka.”
“? Right.”
“Yeah, hitting through triple blocks and getting most of the sets when things get tough… that’s all part of the Ace’s job. But getting your setter to say something like that about you? I think that’s pretty awesome too.”
“...?”
“Uhh…so umm…yeah. A-Anyway! What I’m trying to say is…despite whatever position anybody plays…don’t you think the coolest player is the one the other team watches out for the most? Like if they said “Watch out for that small middle blocker! He’s crazy fast!” and stuff.”
“!!!” Hinata nods ferociously.
“If you want my spot, I won’t let you take it that easily.” You smile at the two.
“Yes, sir!!”
“Um…that’s assuming I get to be back in the starting lineup though.” You deadpan.
“Geez, Asahi! You are so timid for such a big guy.” Suga chuckles.
“It’s good to have you back too…Suga.” Daichi says.
“I’m sorry I was such a wishy-washy, namby-pamby, fidgety-flighty, indecisive wreck.”
“I wouldn’t go that far.” You chuckle. “And it’s good to have our reliable libero back. Right, Noya?”
“Yeah!” The libero answers enthusiastically.
“But no more smacking the vice principal around and breaking stuff, got it?” Noya freezes and has an embarrassed and scared look on his face. “Oh yeah. I guess we got our wuss of an Ace-only-in-name wing spiker back too. I’d almost forgotten.” You giggle at Daichi’s words and Asahi’s facial expression.
“Right. Let’s finish this off and call it a night, folks!” Ukai announces as all the players gather in a circle while you, Kiyoko, Takeda, and Ukai stand to the side.
“Karasuno…Fight!” Dachi cheers.
“Yeah!”
“Oh, Coach.” Takeda says getting the man’s attention.
“?”
“These are the team’s managers. This is Shimizu Kiyoko, a third year.” He introduces, gesturing to the girl, who bows.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Kiyoko says.
“Same to you.”
“And this is (L/N) (Y/N), a first year.” Takeda gestures to you. You bow and then look up to see Ukai has a look of disbelief and hope. When he sees your face fully his expression turns to recognition and shock.
“It’s nice to see you again, Keishin-san.” You say shyly. This surprises Takeda.
“You two know each other?!” He asks.
“Yeah. My gramps used to teach her when she was younger…”
“Don’t forget you would help too.”
“Yeah, you were a terrible student.” He smirks.
“Hey! No, I wasn’t. You were just a bad teacher!!”
“Whatever you say, kid.” You give him a playful evil look. You then get serious.
“So, how is he?” As you and Ukai talk, Kiyoko and Takeda go their ways to let you catch up. The team sees you two talking and wonders if you know each other, and if so, how.
“Okay. Next up…the training camp. Right?” Ukai asks.
“Right.” You reply.
-Bonus-
You’re walking home with Hinata Kageyama, Tanaka, and Noya when Hinata speaks.
“Hey, (Y/N)...”
“What’s up?”
“So I saw you talking with Coach before we left…”
“Okay…What about it?”
“W-Well, you looked like you know each other…”
“Oh!” You giggle. “ Yeah, I know him. His grandfather used to teach me when I was little.”
“Really?!” Hinata, Tanakam and Noya ask. You laugh at their reaction.
“Yup! Keishin-san helped Coach Ukai from time to time as well.”
“Wow! That’s awesome!” Hinata says before he starts asking a million questions. This leads to Kageyama getting annoyed and yelling at Hinata. You laugh as you watch your four friends chat and bicker.
‘I can’t believe I found such amazing friends.’ You think.

“We’re ready to play!!” The two exclaim together.
“...” Ukai watches as Hinata and Kageyama regroup with their teammates. “Sensei.” He says getting Takeda’s attention. “Those two.”
“Hm? Do you mean Hinata and Kageyama?”
“Yeah. They from the same middle school? Wait, it has to be earlier. The same elementary school then?”
“Oh no. They met at the beginning of this very semester. At first they didn’t hit it off at all. In fact, I hear it was pretty rough…? Ukai-kun?”
“...Now that was cold.”
“Huh?...?”
-Small Timeskip- [Score: Municipal Team-20, Karasuno-18]
“Heh! Not bad, kids. Not bad!” Shimada says as one of his teammates tells him it’s his serve. Shimada uses a jump float serve. The ball is heading toward Hinata. He gets ready to receive the ball but at the last second, it swerves in a different direction. Hinata dives for the ball but ends up face-planting onto the floor.
“Bwah Ha Ha! Check that out!” Shimada laughs.
“Someone sure is being mature.” Takinoue comments sarcastically
“Hmmm? What was that?” Takeda asks. “It didn’t seem like a particularly powerful serve from here, but…”
“It’s called a Jump Float serve.” Ukai interrupts with the answer. “You can do one without the jump, just from a standing position. The point is to hit the ball so it has no spin. That way when it’s in the air it’ll wobble erratically, curving or dipping unpredictably.”
“Oh! So it’s like a knuckleball in baseball! Interesting!”
“You can do it in soccer too. They even still call it a knuckleball, though they don’t use their hands. By the way, depending on the ball used in the game, it’ll move differently. The one we’re using today is a type that won’t swerve much…”
“Wait! Wait! Let me write this down!” Takeda says scrambling for something to take notes with.
“Do it again, Shimada!” One of the players encourages as said man serves again. Tanaka tries to receive it but fails due to the ball wobbling. This continues.
“That’s four in a row.” Ukai comments.
‘Gee, thanks, coach.’ You think sarcastically.
“That rookie pair might have a mean quick set, but everybody’s receiving sucks.” Ukai continues. “Especially the rookies.” The whistle is blown indicating that it’s the Municipal Team’s match point.
“Time to wrap this up!” Shimada declares as he serves once again. The ball flies toward Daichi, who receives it and passes it to Kageyama. The setter compliments his captain with a ‘Nice pass.’ Hinata runs to the net and jumps.
“You won’t get past us this time, shorty!” Takinoue exclaims as Ashai, another teammate, and he jump to block Hinata. Kageyama sets the ball to Tanaka, who is in the air on the other side of the net.
“Oops!” Asahi says as he follows the ball with his eyes.
“Gah!!” Takinoue looks at Tanaka.
“Hi there!!” Tanaka says. “Didja miss me?!” He asks as he spikes the ball, completely unmarked. Noya receives the ball, sending it to Suga as he gets praised.
“Suga!” Asahi calls for the ball. Suga smiles and calls to Ashai as he sets the ball to him. Hinata rushes to Asahi and jumps to block him. Asahi spikes the ball with so much force that when it hits Hinata’s hand he flinches. You wince and watch as the ball hits the floor earning the Municipal Team a point. This point secures them the second set win, in turn, it secures them the game. As the Municipal Team celebrates, Tanaka goes to Hinata.
“AAAUGH!! Hinata, I’m sorry, bro! I was totally free and clear on that hit too!” He says, hitting his forehead.
“N-No, that’s okay.” Hinata replies.
“Still, that was pretty awesome. You had them completely hooked! I’m almost kinda jealous. Couldn’t at least one of them mark me? I felt left out!” Tanaka then lowers his voice. “I’ll be counting on you next time too, bruh!”
“!! Y-Yes, sir!”
You walk over to the two.
“Hey, guys!” You say as they look at you and smile.
“Hey, (Y/N)!” Hinata greets happily.
“You guys did amazing! Hinata, that last rally was great. The way you pulled their attention was fantastic!” This causes the boy to blush. “And Tanaka, that spike was amazing and powerful!” Tanaka freezes before falling to his knees and crying about how their Angel praised him. “Oh! Hinata. Are your hands okay?” You ask, grabbing his hands to look at them. Hinata’s blush increases massively. “Ashai’s spike was really strong and I noticed you wince so I wanted to make sure you’re okay.”
“Y-Yeah. I-I’m okay.” Hinata assures flustered. You inspect his hands for a second longer before letting them go. Hinata is slightly disappointed, even though he was extremely flustered, he likes the feeling of your hands touching his.
“What about me, Angel?” Tanaka whines holding his hands toward you. You look at his hands and tell him he looks okay. “She said I look okay!” He celebrates. ‘Okay…’ You think. You look over to the Municipal Team and begin speaking.
“Alright guys, I’m going to go congratulate the others. See ya!” You wave, walking to the other team.
“Bye!” Hinata says as Tanaka is still freaking out.
“Excuse me.” You say walking to the original members of the Municipal Team, since they separated from the high schoolers. They stop to look at you.
“Yes?” Shimada replies.
“I wanted to congratulate you guys on your win. You all played amazingly.”
“Thank you…” Takinoue begins.
“Ah! I’m sorry! My name is (L/N) (Y/N).” You say bowing embarrassed.
“Nice to meet you, (L/N)-chan. I’m Takinoue Yusuke.”
“Nice to meet you too Takinoue Senpai.” You look at the other men waiting for them to introduce themselves.
“I’m Uchizawa Hidenori.”
“Mori Yukinari.” He says pointing to himself.
“And I’m Shimada Makoto.”
“It’s nice to meet you Uchizawa Senpai, Mori Senpai, Shimada Senpai.” You say looking at each man. “Shimada Senpai, your jump float serves were amazing!”
“Thank you, (L/N)-chan.”
“Please, (Y/N) is fine.” You smile at the four. Ashai, Suga, and Noya are talking which catches your attention. The four notices. You turn back to them. “If you’ll excuse me.” You bow. “It was nice meeting you Senpais. Congratulations again!” You say walking to your teammates.
“Suga! Asahi! Noya!” You get their attention.
“Hey, (Y/N).” Suga greets happily.
“Hey, (Y/N).” Asahi greets.
“Hey, Angel!” Noya says.
“Congratulations you guys! You all did amazing!”
“Thank you!” They all say.
“Suga, your setting was spot on! And Ashai, great spikes! Especially the last one! And Noya, your receives were phenomenal. That last one was just…wow!” They all blush and thank you. “I’m really proud of you three.” This shocks them. “I know I haven’t known you guys for very long and I may not know the full story, and may never, but seeing you three play together was heartwarming. Sure, at first it was a bit rocky and awkward but after you called for the ball that first time…” You look at Ashai. “...everything seemed to fall right back in place.” All three of them look at you in shock. “You guys looked so happy playing together after that. I can’t wait to see all of you guys play together. It’s going to be…I don’t know the right words but I can’t wait!” They stare at you, lost for words. You look between the three, and suddenly feeling embarrassed, you speak. “Well, I’m going to go talk to the others. See ya!” You walk away with a slight blush.
‘Wow…’ They think simultaneously while blushing. ‘She’s too sweet…’
-A Few Minutes Later-
“Man! I don’t get half of what happened, but ain’t the glory days of high school great?” Shimada says to Mori. “Call for the ball, Ace,” and all that. Oh, to be that young again!”
“Yeah, yeah! “As long as you’ve got me, you’re the greatest.” I wish I coulda said that in high school.” You look over to see Kageyama and Noya blushing. This causes you to giggle, only making it worse.
“You bet! You kids sure made us old farts feel extra old tonight!” Takinoue exclaims happily.
“Um, w-we’re sorry.” Suga apologizes.
“Naaah, it’s okay. There’s still a rawness to you guys…but once you all start working together, I wouldn't be surprised if you go places.” A huge smile spreads across your face.
“Thank you so much!” Everyone says at once.
“No prob.” Takinoue replies as the four men leave the gym.
“Right. First and foremost…receiving.” Ukai says addressing everyone.

“AAAA” Asahi yells, frightened.
“GAAAH!!” Tanka yells worriedly.
“HINATA!!!” You scream, quickly running over to him.
You get to Hinata first, with the others arriving right after.
“Hinata! Are you okay?” You ask worriedly.
“...! OWWWW…” He replies.
“Aha! He lives!” Noya says.
“You okay, bro?” Tanaka asks.
“OHMYGOD. OHMYGOD. OHMYGOD. Are you okay I’m sorry I’m sorry!!!” Asahi panics.
“It’s his own stupid fault for zoning out like an idiot.” Tsukishima says nonchalantly.
“Tsukishima! Quit!” You scold, earning a “tch” and an eye roll.
“A-Ambulance! C-Call an Ambulance!!” Takeda freaks out.
“Calm down, sensei.” Ukai says.
Hinata begins to sit up, so you help him by telling him to move slowly.
“Oh, uh, it’s okay. I’m fine. Sorry to make you all worry.” Hinata says, rubbing his head.
“You sure? Maybe you should sit out a rally or two…” Daichi says.
“No! I’m fine! I promise!” Hinata says quickly. “I just…didn’t dodge all the way in time. Besides, I’m used to getting hit in the face!” ‘You shouldn’t be though…’ You think sweat dropping. “I’m very sorry!”
“Don’t be.” Suga smiles. Before you can say anything you feel a very familiar dark aura. You and Hinata look at the source, Kageyama. He’s pretty pissed off.
“What’d you think you were doing? Zoning out in the middle of a rally…” Kageyama asks.
“Um! Uh! I, ah!” Hinata tries to respond but he’s too scared.
‘The fact that Kageyama isn’t yelling is not a good thing…’ You think and know that Hinata is thinking the same thing.
“I know what you were thinking.”
“?!”
“You were thinking about how cool the Ace is but that all you’re good at is being a decoy, which is stupid and boring. You were wishing you were as tall and strong as Asahi so you could be an Ace too.”
“Enough Kageyama…” You say but are ignored.
“I…I was not!” Hinata defends but only earns a glare from Kageyama. “O-Okay…so, uh…maybe a little.”
“Once you realized our team had an Ace…aside from all the idolization or whatever…you got jealous.” Kageyama begins. “Quit letting your brain wander off onto stupid crap during a game.”
“...So I got a little jealous. So what?”
“Hinata…” You say softly.
“YOU’RE BIG AND TALL AND SKILLED ALREADY! YOU COULD NEVER UNDERSTAND WHAT IT’S LIKE FOR ME!!”
“Guys. Stop!”
Suddenly the gym doors open. An older man is standing in the doorway.
“Hey! What are you all still doing here? It’s time to close up!” He says. “Hurry and clean up.”
“Excuse me!” Takeda begins. “Could we please at least finish this game first?”
“But it’s awfully late…”
“I’ll take responsibility and supervise everyone!”
“Well…”
“Once we’ve finished, I will do all the final checks and make sure everything is properly locked up.”
You look at Hinata and see he’s sad and embarrassed. You go over to him.
“...Hey…Hinata…” You softly say. He looks at you. “Are you okay?” HE puts on a fake smile.
“Yup! All good!”
“You don’t have to fake it with me.” He looks slightly shocked and drops his “smile.”
“It’s my fault for delaying the game…”
“You can’t blame yourself. You got hit in the head with a volleyball. At least you wanted to continue playing. Others would’ve taken Daichi’s offer of sitting out.”
“But then I had to go and yell at Kageyama for it.”
“What Kageyama did and said was completely uncalled for. You were upset and defending yourself. It was admirable.” This causes Hinata to blush.
“Thanks, (Y/N).”
“You’re welcome. Now…Are you hurting anywhere? Do you have a headache? Dizzy? Nauseous?”
“N-No. I’m okay. I promise.”
“Good.” You lightly punch his shoulder. “Don’t make me worry like that!”
“! I-I’m sorry! I-I didn’t -” Hinata can’t finish his statement because you suddenly hugged him.
“But I’m glad you’re okay.” You say hugging him tighter. This causes Hinata to turn bright red. You stop hugging him just as Takeda closes the gym door.
“Sorry, Sensei. Thanks for that.” Daichi says and Takeda turns around and gives him a thumbs up. “Okay, everyone! Let’s get back to playing!”
The game is about to resume but Kageyama gets Asahi and Takinoue’s attention.
“This rally.. I’m going to set the ball for him.” He says pointing to Hinata. “Please try as hard as you can to block him.” Hinata, Takinoue, and Asahi look at him confusedly. ‘What are you playing at Kageyama?’ You wonder.
“Hey, Hey! You trying to taunt us now?” Takinoue asks, annoyed.
“Yes, sir!” It’s a blatant taunt! I’m sorry for being disrespectful!!” Kageyama replies bowing. This shocks both you and Takinoue.
“Ha! Well aren’t you a gutsy kid! I like that! Okay, Then! We’ll take you up on that!” Takinoue replies.
“Thank you, sir!” Kageyama says before staring at Asahi intently and then walking away.
“What the heck is that rookie thinking? A quick set is effective precisely because you can’t predict it. Telling the other guys it’s coming means he’s gonna run smack into a triple block. And if that happens short stuff doesn’t stand a chance.” Ukai comments.
“...True…” Takeda begins. “If he runs headlong into a block…that may be the case, yes.” He finishes as Ukai looks at him questioningly.
‘Augh! Stupid Kageyama. What’s he doing telling the other team what we’re going to do next? There’s no way I can punch the ball through blockers that tough. He knows that!’ Hinata thinks nervously before looking at Kageyama, whose back is turned, frustrated.
“Hinata. The way you are right now…you suck. You’re a scrub who’s fast and kinda knows how to jump. That’s it.” Kageyama says darkly.
“...?”
“The Ace is a player who can put the entire team on his back and carry it.” Kageyama continues. “That’s someone you’ll never be.”
“!!” Hinata looks like he’s going to cry.
“Hey, um. Don’t you think…” Asahi begins,
“Yo, man!” Tanaka says.
“BUT!” Kageyama continues again, interrupting Asahi and Tanaka. “As long as you’re with me, you’re the greatest!!” Hinata looks at the setter in shock. “Yeah, Asahi-san’s spikes are super powerful! And yeah, he can go straight through even a triple block!”
“Huh?! Um! N-Not all the time…No, but…” Asahi stutters at KAgeyama’s words.
“Stop acting so modest!” Noya scolds the Ace.
“So what about you? All the times I’ve put the ball up for you… have you ever run into a block? Ever?” Kageyama asks, earning another look of shock from the middle blocker.
The whistle is blown and Shimada serves the ball. Ennoshita receives it as Hinata looks at the other team's blockers and begins getting intimidated.
“Dodge!!” Kageyama yells, pulling Hinata from his thoughts. “It’s not like there’s anything else you can do…you scrub!!”
Hinata runs to the left side of the court with the opponent's blockers following him. He bends his legs and swings his arms back getting ready to jump. ‘That’s right. If we can’t go through…’ Hinata thinks.
“We go around.” He says before jumping back and running to the right side of the court. This surprises Asahi, Takinoue, and Ukai.
‘I hate getting blocked! I hate getting stopped!!’ Hinata thinks as he jumps into the air. ‘If even one blocker gets up in front of me…there’s no way I can beat it the way I am now. I can’t play like the Ace plays. But…! “As long as you’re with me…you’re the greatest!”’ Hinata spikes the ball, surprising everyone, and earns his team a point.
“Yeah, you’re no Ace! But with your speed…your jumps…and my setting…we can take on any blockers out there!” Kageyama declares. “The point the Ace scores by busting through a block…and the point you score by going around them…It’s still a point! Even if you don’t have the fancy “Ace” label you rack up points in games! They pay attention to you, and follow you…and that frees up our other hitters! Including the Ace!! Right?!” Kageyama finishes and whirls his head toward Tanaka.
“Dwah?! Y-Yeah!” The second year begins. “He’s got a good point, Bro! There’s a huge difference in how well our offense works…depending on whether or not you’ve got your decoy game up and running.”
“Despite all that…do you still hate the part you play on this team?! Do you still think it’s boring and uncool?!” Hinata doesn’t answer. He stands still thinking until he looks at his stinging hand.
“...I don’t…”
“What?”
“I don’t think that!”
“Good!!”
Nishinoya is gaping at the two as Suga chuckles. Hinata looks at Asahi.
“That was a really amazing spike you did.” Asahi compliments the first year.
“!! Thank you!!” Hinata says with a blush.
“Hey, Kageyama…” You say catching his attention. He turns to look at you. “That was sweet. What you did for Hinata.” His eyes widen and a blush creeps to his cheeks. He doesn’t know how to respond. “But…maybe next time…be a bit nicer.” You say tilting your head to the side with a closed-eyed smile that’s a mix of sweet and threatening. Kageyama‘s blush increases so he looks away.
“W-Whatever…” He says.
“Awesome! Now I think you know what to do.” You say as the setter goes to Daichi.
“I’m very sorry for interrupting the game again!!” He apologizes as he bows.
“Um! N-No, it’s okay.” Daichi replies.
“We’re all finished now, so…” Kageyama begins as he stands next to Hinata.
“We’re ready to play!!” The two exclaim together.

“Hinata, you little squirt! Don’t butt in like that!! You totally ruined my chance to say something cool!!!” You giggle at them. The whistle is blown indicating the start of the next rally.
The Municipal Team serves and Ennoshita receives the ball. He calls for cover from Kageyama while Ukai thinks about how everybody needs to work on bumps and passing. Kageyama runs to get into position to set along with Hinata coming to his spot.
‘Hm. He figured out quickly where the ball would be coming down. First step is confident and correct.’ Ukai thinks about Kageyama. ‘This setter’s supposed to be a rookie, right? So. Who’s he going to use…’ Ukai’s thought is answered as he sees Hinata jump.
Ukai, Takinoue, Shimada, Ashai, and Noya stare at Hinata. They are shocked by how fast and high he can jump. Hinata hits the ball and earns his team a point.
“Yeah!! Nice one, Hinata! Kageyama!” Tanaka praises.
Noya, Asahi, and Ukai are left with their mouths agape. Suga is looking at Asahi and Noya expectantly, while Takeda is looking at Ukai the same way. You have a look of pride as you see their reactions.
“Whoa!! Shoyo, that was awesome!! So awesome even I couldn't help but stop and stare!” Noya praises excitedly as the first-year blushes.
‘There were no hand signs. No verbal cues. And they still…?!’ Ukai thinks before speaking. “Hey, you!!” He yells causing Hinata to flinch and he and Kageyama to look at the coach. “Why did you jump where you did?! How did you know?! Short Stuff!”
“Short…?” Hinata begins. “Well… I just jump wherever I want, because the ball always comes wherever I am. Coach.”
‘...!! My eyes don’t wanna believe it, but I know I saw it. When Short Stuff jumped, his eyes were closed. Are you telling me that rookie setter was able to match his set to his movements that perfectly?!’ Ukai is shocked. ‘And how can he be so completely sure the ball is always going to be there? What normal player can trust so much that he’ll jump and swing totally blind?’
“YOU TWO FREAKS OR SOMETHIN’?!” Ukai yells at Hinata and Kageyama.
“Freaks…?” They respond simultaneously. Tsukishima chuckles.
“Why?” Hinata asks.
“Don’t ask me.” Kageyama replies.
“At first I didn’t get what that whole conversation right before the game was about…” Ukai begins, getting you and Takeda’s attention. “But…I think I see now. So that rookie setter’s likely a prodigy of some sort. Compared to a player like him…the normal slobs have to feel inferior. But… A set and a spike happen in less time than a single breath.” He continues as the game resumes. “Players need a whole lot of hours working together to get that kind of timing down. Faith like that isn’t something you can build in a day. So if we say what our rookie setter has is overwhelming talent… then what his senior there has is years of trust and stability.” He observes each of the players before beginning again. “This Karasuno team is pretty dang good!”
‘Took you long enough.’ You think with a chuckle.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner, sensei?” Ukai asks Takeda with a pat on the back, while you roll your eyes.
“I did. Multiple times.”
The game continues with Ukai’s attention refocusing on Hinata.
“Who woulda thought short stuff would be a middle blocker just from looking? He’s got a mean quick attack… but how’s his blocking?” Hinata is standing by the net getting ready to block. Asahi is standing across from him and notices his intense stare. This makes Ashai avert his gaze.
“Oh, come to think of it, this game is Hinata’s first chance to play against the ace position that he’s idolized so much.” Takeda points out.
“Hm?”
“Well, you see, Hinata’s idol is a player called “The Little Giant.” He was someone who played during Karasuno’s golden age. That’s why he chose to attend Karasuno, too. He is always giving his best, saying that someday he’s going to be an ace too. And now in this game, Hinata gets to face off with Karasuno’s current reigning Ace!”
“Now isn’t that neat. Though from this angle, it looks a lot like a grown man playing an elementary kid.” Ukai replies. This makes you slightly laugh as you look at the two. You see Suga uses a hand signal for Asahi. ‘Probably telling him the kind of set he’s going to use.’ You think.
Hinata looks at Asahi with such concentration that it’s a bit scary. Karasuno serves and Noya receives it, passing it to Suga. Suga sets it to Ashai. ‘A shoot.’ You think. Asahi jumps and gets ready to spike but is surprised when he sees Hinata in front of him in the air, ready to block.
‘He popped up out of nowhere!!’ Asahi thinks.
Asahi spikes the ball and it hits Hinata’s hand with great force. The ball ricotes off of Hinata’s hand and goes behind him. Daichi and Tsukishima run to save the ball from hitting the ground but neither make it in time. The ball hits the floor earning a point for the Municipal Team. Asahi watches as Daichi talks to Hinata.
“...I knew he could jump, but it’s really shocking to see him pop up right in front of my face like that. How high can he go?” Asahi says to himself.
“That was awesome!” Hinata says looking at his red and stinging hands. “And he hasn’t played for a month!” You smile fondly at the first year.
“Yo, Hinata!” Kageyama begins. “You’re using your hands wrong when you block! If you’re trying to stop them, your hands go like this!” He demonstrates. “See? Like this!” Hinata doesn’t pay attention to Kageyama because he’s too focused on watching Asahi. “Are you even listening to me, boke?!” Since Hinata still wasn’t paying attention, Kageyama started squeezing his head. ‘At least Kageyama tried helping him…’ You think.
“Kageyama, you’re going to hurt him…” You say worryingly. Kageyama stops squeezing Hinata’s head and just stares at him.
“Hey…” Kageyama begins but is interrupted by Hinata.
“Man, the Ace is awesome!! He can hit the ball so hard it doesn’t matter if there’s a block! It’s still gonna smash through and score a point!”
“...”
“? What?”
“Nothing.” Kageyama says walking away.
“?”
“We’re running out of time, so let’s dive right into the second set, everyone.” Daichi says. The game continues. Hinata starts staring at Asahi and gets lost in his thoughts.
‘...If I was as tall and strong as he is…then I could…Whoa whoa whoa!’ Hinata starts shaking his head. ‘Don’t think about that. The Little Giant was awesome and short too! Though he was taller than me. Still…’
“Asahi!!” Someone calls out for Asahi to spike.
‘That’s so cool…’
“?! Hinata!!” You and Daichi call out at the same time.
“Huh?” Hinata snaps out of it and sees the ball flying toward him. Before he could react, the ball hit him straight in the face, causing him to fly backward.
“?! That idiot!!” Kageyama yells.
“AAAA” Asahi yells, frightened.
“GAAAH!!” Tanka yells worriedly.
“HINATA!!!” You scream, quickly running over to him.

“No getting nervous!” Kageyama scolds Hinata.
‘We get to play…against The Ace!!’ Hinata thinks excitedly, ignoring Kageyama.
“This is going to be good!” You whisper.
Suga sets the ball to Takinoue, who spikes it and earns a point for their team.
“Yeah! Not bad, not bad! Nice set.” Takinoue praises Suga.
“Thank you!” Suga responds happily.
“! Ooh!! Suga-san’s quick set is awesome!” Hinata says admiringly.
“Well, Suga is a pretty darn good setter, you know!” Daichi boasts.
‘Somebody sounds really happy.’ Tanaka and Ennoshita think as you and Kageyama look at Suga in awe.
“Awesome set, Suga-san!” Noya praises.
“! Thanks! But it’s more like the municipal team guys are just that good at syncing up with me. You can tell they’ve been playing for a long time. My setting could still use improvement. But… I have to keep using fast attacks and make sure to set up an aggressive strategy. Otherwise, this will turn into just another game where I dump all the weight on the Ace.”
“Suga-san! You’ve gotten even more awesome than before!”
“Huh? R-Really? You think so? Wow, Nishinoya. It makes me happy to hear that from you.” The setter replies bashfully. The game starts again. Hinata and Kageyama do their quick attack and earn a point. This leaves the other team astonished.
“Whoa!! What the heck was that?!” Takinoue asks.
“Did you see him jump?!” Mori asks.
“That set was dead perfect…!” Shimada points out.
You look at Coach Ukai, he has a shocked expression. Takeda is behind him acting giddy as he watches the coach intently. You smirk at Ukai. ‘There’s the look. I knew you’d react that way. Now let those gears turn and look to the future.’ You think. You notice Asahi looking down while thinking.
“...I do.” He begins as Nishinoya walks by him. The Libero stops and looks at him questionably. “No matter how many times I get stuffed… I do want to keep trying. I do want to spike it again.” Asahi finishes standing tall and with determination. Nishinoya looks at him with wide eyes as you smile proudly.
“...That’s good.” Nishinoya begins, causing Asahi to look at him. “That’s all I wanted to hear.” Your smile grows with Nishinoya’s statement. ‘It’s starting to get better.’ You think as Hinata serves. Shimada receives it sloppily and asks for cover.
“Hey, Mr. Ponytail! Just send it over!” Mori says passing the ball to Asahi. Tanaka, Suga, and Asahi look nervous and shocked as the ball flies toward Asahi. ‘C’mon Asahi, you got this.’ You think. Asahi runs to the net getting ready to spike.
“Stop him!” Kageyama shouts.
“Don’t order me around, Your Majesty.” Tsukishima responds.
“Give it everything you’ve got Asahi-san!” Tanaka shouts emotionally. Asahi jumps as Daichi watches in shock and Hinata in awe. Ashai is blocked and everything seems to slow. The ball is falling and Asahi is upset, then out of nowhere, Nishinoya saves the ball by sliding his hand right under the ball at the last second. The ball hits the top of his hand and goes flying up. Everyone is surprised. Tanaka thinks back to his conversation with Noya when he learned Noya was practicing blocked ball retrieval.
“Noya-saaan!!!” Tanaka cries, causing Tsukishima to flinch.
“Just once more!! Call for the ball just one more time Ace!” Noya yells. Suga goes after the ball with uncertainty about who to set it for. His thoughts are interrupted by Kageyama calling his name.
“Do it again! Keep doing it until it works!!”
“Oh, so the King is a sadist, hmm?” Tsukishima teases.
“What!!” Kageyama replies. Suga gets lost in his thoughts again until he hears another shout.
“Do it again!” You yell. “Don’t be scared! Remember the joy! Call for it!” Asahi glances at you with uncertainty. He then becomes determined.
“Shimada-san…!” Suga begins.
“SUGAAAAAAAA!” Asahi screams. “ONE MORE!!!” Suga looks at him with shock.
“Asahi!!” Suga calls, setting the ball to him.
“What? You helping the other team? Sorry, but you do know we’re stopping him again, right?” Tsukishima quips.
“Duh. It would be pointless if we just handed it to him.” Kageyama replies as Tanaka cries some more. Asahi jumps and hits the ball. It slams through the block and hits the floor on the other team's side. You smile and look at the third year proudly.
“Wooow! Did you hear the sound that made?! It was like “BA-WHAM!”.” Takeda exclaims as Ukai looks at him annoyed.
“Good one!!” Suga says walking over to Noya and Asahi. “Nice work, Asahi! You too, Nishinoya!”
“Um…guys?” Asahi begins sheepishly. “Nice set, Suga. And, uh, thanks for the great save, Nishinoya.” The two look at Asahi shocked before smiling widely.
“That was amazing!!” Takeda begins again. “The moment I realized the ball had been blocked, Nishinoya was already under it! That was incredible! If we can get blocked balls up like that, there’s nothing left for us to be afraid of!”
“What the heck are you talking about? No way we’ll be able to dig that ball all the time… no matter how hard we try.” Ukai states.
“Huh?”
“Spiked balls can move at upwards of 60 mph. Sometimes faster. You can only guess what angle they’re going to take, and the ball only needs to travel eight to ten feet to hit the floor. Digging every one of those is impossible.”
“Oh…”
“However… It’s important to get the whole team to understand that once a ball is blocked… that doesn’t mean it’s all over. It can be a really big thing, emotionally, knowing…and I mean knowing, down in your gut, that your teammates have your back.”
“I see.”
‘He sure has matured…’ You think, having heard Ukai and Takeda’s conversation.
“Kageyama, Tsukishima, and Tanaka triple-blocked him, but he still busted through it. So that’s…The Ace!” Hinata says, looking at Asahi.
“Yo. You were the one all excited to watch an Ace in action. Don’t go letting him scare you.” Kageyama says, pulling Hinata’s attention away from Asahi.
“I-I’m not afraid!!” Hinata defends as he jumps. “I’m not as tall or strong as him, but I can still play too! Next rally…it’s my turn!!” Hinata exclaims. You see Kageyama smirk and you smile at the two. Your attention turns to Noya as he yells at Asahi.
“What was the jump?! It was terrible!! That’s what happens when you slack off for a month!!”
“Yeah…sorry.”
“Ha Ha…Harsh as always, Nishinoya.” Suga laughs. Daichi looks at the three fondly before Tanaka gets his attention.
“Daichi…!” He says happily, pointing at the three.
“Yeah.” Daichi begins. “They already had a bunch of veterans over there with the municipal players…adding a back-in-form Asahi is going to make it really tough for us.” ‘He sure looks happy about that.’ You, Tanaka, and Ennoshita think.
“C’mon, Daichi! What’re you getting all worried for?” Tanaka begins.
“You’ve still got…”
“Don’t forget that you’ve got…”
“ME!!” Tanaka and Hinata say together.
“Hm? What was that?” Daichi says as Tanaka scolds Hinata.
“Hinata, you little squirt! Don’t butt in like that!! You totally ruined my chance to say something cool!!!” You giggle at them. The whistle is blown indicating the start of the next rally.

“Uh, our opponents…?” Daichi asks,
“Yep! The Karasuno Municipal Team.”
“Dammit! Shoulda guesses I wouldn’t be able to get everybody at this hour on a weekday.” Ukai says, closing his phone. Some people walk into the gym and Ukai greets them. “Thanks for showing up on short notice, guys!”
“When he said municipal team, I expected a bunch of middle-aged dads.” Tsukishima remarks while looking at the newly arrived guys who are around the same age as Ukai.
“Me too.” Yamaguchi agrees.
“Hey. Be nice, you two.” You say while walking past.
“Okay, folks! Let’s get this started!” Ukai announces.
“Yes, Coach!” The boys reply heading onto the court. Nishinoya doesn’t move and Ukai notices and looks at him questioningly.
“You there. What’s wrong?” Uaki asks, getting Noya and Daichi’s attention.
“Ah! I’m sorry, Coach. He has reasons not to…” Daichi tries explaining.
“What. Can’t play? He’s hurt?”
“Uh, not exactly…”
“Then what is it? So he’s not hurt, but he can’t play for you guys… Can’t say I get it, but ah well. How ‘bout he joins the municipal side? Our libero’s stuck at work and can’t come.”
“Um, that might work, I guess.” Daichi says as Nishinoya starts walking to the municipal team’s side.
“Okay. We need two more people. Maybe I can pull some guys off the bench…?”
“Ah!! It’s Asahi-san!!” Hinata shouts, causing everyone to look at him in surprise and causing Nishinoya to stop dead in his tracks. You look to see Hinata hanging from the metal bars of the window. You walk over to the window and sure enough, Asahi is walking by. Tanaka is soon at the window with the two of you.
“Asahi-san!” Hinata says excitedly.
“Asahi-san!” Tanaka says even more excitedly.
“Geh! You again.” Asahi says frightened.
“Hi, Asahi!” You say waving with a smile. Asahi calms slightly until he notices Hinata staring at him. The gym door slides open and Ukai pokes his head out.
“What, somebody’s late?! Lazy punk! What’s your position?!” Ukai questions.
“Um! W-Wing Spiker…?” Asahi answers, scared.
“We’re short bodies! Get yer butt in here and get warmed up! Now! Move! Move!!” Asahi takes his shoes off and enters the gym nervously with his head down. Nishinoya stares at Asahi, who doesn’t look at anyone. You go up to Asahi.
“Hey…” You begin, causing him to look at you. “It’ll be okay. I’ll be here for you.” You finish with a smile and a comforting hand on his arm. He looks at you with a blush and thanks you.
“All that’s left is a setter. I’d do it, but I’ve gotta stay out and watch.” Ukai thinks aloud. He looks over at Suga, Kageyama, and Hinata. “Could you guys send one of your setters over to the municipal side?”
“...” Suga and Kageyama are silent before Suga starts walking over to the municipal side.
“Suga-san?!” Tanaka exclaims.
“You’d better not be doing this to give me the position.” Kageyama states, causing Suga to stop. “You’re just giving up and backing down so I can move up… I’m not going to accept that.”
“Kageyama… when you joined the team… part of me was ready to have a battle over the starting position.” Suga begins. “But another part of me… was relieved I didn’t have to do it anymore.”
“Suga…” You whisper sadly.
“The setter is the axis of a team’s offense. They have to be the toughest player on the team. But I… I lost all my confidence, I was afraid of setting.” Suga continues as everyone looks at him. “I couldn’t help but fear I was setting my hitters into a block. But with you here, Kageyama, I could hide in the shadow of your massive talent. I… was relieved! I have to admit, watching one of the balls I set get smacked down in a block… is still going to scare me. But! I still want one last chance to set the ball for you… Asahi!” Asahi looks at Suga in shock. “That’s why I’m going over to this side, Kageyama. I won’t let you have that spot without a fight.” Suga says, looking back at Kageyama.
“I won’t be backing down either.” Kageyama replies.
“Nishinoya, I’ll be counting on you for great follow-ups.” Suga says cheerfully.
“You bet.” Nishinoya replies before glancing at a troubled Asahi. Nishinoya doesn't say anything but instead heads onto the court.
“Wow…” You say catching Kiyoko’s attention. “Suga is awesome. It’s great that he isn’t giving up. And his speech was incredible.” Kiyoko looks at you and smiles before agreeing with you.
“Hurry and warm up!” Ukai yells.
“Asahi-san is back! That’s awesome! Right?” Hinata exclaims happily.
“He’s back for now, yeah.” Kageyama replies.
“Kageyama~ Don’t think like that, have faith.” You say whining a bit. He looks at you before refocusing on the game that’s about to start.
Starting Order.
Karasuno:
Back Left-Ennoshita, Back Middle- Tsukishima, Back Right- Kageyama, Front Left- Daichi, Front Middle- Hinata, Front Right- Tanaka
Municipal Team & Others:
Back Left- Shimada, Back Middle- Mori (Noya), Back Right- Suga, Front Left- Uchizawa, Front Middle- Takinoue, Front Right- Asahi
“No getting nervous!” Kageyama scolds Hinata.
‘We get to play…against The Ace!!’ Hinata thinks excitedly, ignoring Kageyama.
“This is going to be good!” You whisper.

“Oh! I’d love to get to know you better! So pleeeease consider coming back to the team!” You say cheerfully, shocking the third year. He feels his heartbeat quicken at your words. ‘I need to take a walk to think and calm down.’ He thinks as he gets up. He walks toward the hallway only to be met with two familiar faces.
“...”
“...”
“...So…”
“So, um, why are you two so worried about somebody you haven't even practiced with?” Ashai asks, rubbing his head. “Right now the team can win against Aoba Johsai. And that was without Nishinoya too.”
“UM!! B-BECAUSE WITHOUT YOU THERE, ASAHI-SAN ALL THE SECOND AND THIRD YEARS LOOK SUPER BUMMED!! SIR!!” Hinata shouts, causing Ashai to jump.
“Don’t shout.” Kageyama scolds while hitting Hinata.
“Ha Ha! You two are interesting.” Asahi laughs. “But sorry. When the other team throws a strong, tall block in front of me, I just can’t see myself punching the ball through it anymore.” He continues disheartedly. “All I can envision is getting shut out– or being so afraid of getting shut out that I take myself out of the game.”
“Um, I-I know this might sound condescending, coming from a rookie who’s as…as short as me…” Hinata says, hanging his head.
“I don’t mind. What is it?”
“Um! I know that feeling too!” Hinata exclaims. “I’m short and don’t have much skill yet, so I kept getting stuffed all the time! But with him setting for me…” He continues as he points to Kageyama. “...I can dodge any block that anybody tries to throw at me! So now there’re never any blockers in front of me!” Ashai looks at Hinata shocked. “And when I jump..the whole other side of the net kinda goes FWAA and opens up!”
‘Yeah, I remember what that looked like.’ Asahi thinks sadly.
“And! And!” Hinata begins excitedly as he starts waving his arms around, scaring Asahi. “When I’m at the top of my jump, and the ball comes to my hand, and it’s, I dunno, it’s weight…Its solidness just kinda smacks me in the palm. That feeling…! I love that feeling!” He finishes while looking at his palm in glee.
“Ugh. Try making sense when you talk.” Kageyama says annoyed.
“Huh?”
‘I know that feeling too. I know it all too well…’ Asahi thinks as he becomes sadder.
“Anyway! I’m really jealous of you Asahi-san.” Hinata begins. “Right now, I’m still not tall enough or strong enough to smash a ball past any blockers. But you can. Some team might have found a way to block you really well… but I’m sure you’ve made attacks count way more times than you’ve been blocked! That’s why… That’s why everybody calls you The Ace!”
“...!” Asahi is speechless as he remembers that Hinata told him he wants to be the Ace someday. The school bell rings which causes Kageyama to tug Hinata and tell him to c’mon. Hinata doesn’t budge.
“Get moving boke! You wanna be late?!” Kageyama says, smacking Hinata. The two first years start walking away until Kageyama stops. “Erm…It’s no surprise you can’t win the game by yourself. It’s only natural. That’s why there are six people on the court. Not that I’m one to talk…I…I just learned that myself recently.”
“...”
“See you later.”
-After School-
Asahi is walking past the gym when he hears people inside. ‘Wow, it’s early. They’re already hitting the ball?’
“Again! Do it again!” One voice says.
“I know! I know! Shut up already!” Another voice says, Asahi looks inside and his eyes immediately go wide. He sees Kageyama set the ball to Hinata. Hinata jumps high into the air and spikes the ball.
‘Wow…! What an incredible jump! And that setting…the timing was perfect!’ Asahi thinks in awe.
“Yeah!! Our quick attack is gonna score loads of points against The Cats too!” Hinata exclaims, pulling Asahi from his thoughts. Asahi is shocked after hearing this. ‘The Cats?’ He begins to think. ‘Does he mean Nekoma? We’re going to play against the Nekoma High School?!’
“We have a practice game against them at the end of the golden week training camp.” Daichi says after suddenly appearing behind Asahi.
“!!” Asahi jolts, having been caught by the captain. “Geh!”
“Hey! What do you mean by “Geh”?” Asahi starts to run away. “Don’t run away from me!”
“But you’re scary when you’re mad!”
“I’m not mad at you!!”
“...” They both stand in silence.
“You heard, right? The Nekoma is coming here. Well… I guess to us, Nekoma is just some school we hear about in old stories. Not that they’re all the old. It’s not like either of our teams has any real connection now. But…I can’t deny it is a little exciting to know we’re the ones who get to play the first match with them in years.”
“...But…I don’t deserve to show my face anymore. Not to Sugawara…and not to Nishinoya.”
“!...Sheese! Seriously, Asahi. For such a big guy, you really are a wuss. Could you and Nishinoya be any more opposites?” Daichi says, patting Asahi on the shoulder.
“Um, could you please not be that blunt?”
“Quit worrying so much. Suga’s over it, of course. Even Nishinoya’s fine! Unlike you, both of them are considerate and forgiving types.”
“Weren’t you supposed to be the generally nice-to-everyone character?”
“To everyone…except you. You don’t count. Because you’re a wuss.”
“...”
“Yeah, you’ve skipped practice for over a month…and things but be a little awkward between everybody right now. But… y’know? None of the matters.”
“...”
“If you think you might still like volleyball…that’s reason enough for you to come back.”
“!”
“Oh. And one more thing.”
“?”
“One of our new rookies has big dreams about being an Ace someday.” Asahi thinks back to what Hinata said about the feeling of a spike. Daichi sees Asahi spacing out so he punches his arm which snaps him out of it. Daichi then stomps into the gym.
-At Sakanoshita Market-
The shopkeeper is dusting a few shelves while humming. He turns his head slightly towards the entrance of the shop, only to be scared half to death by Takeda peaking around the corner. The shopkeeper storms to the door and slides it open quickly.
“What the heck are you doing?!” The shopkeeper yells, shocking Takeda.
“Erm! I-I’m sorry. I was just checking to see if there were customers inside…” Takeda explains.
“Again with the coach stuff.”
“Yes…”
“Listen. I was never a particularly talented player back in school. I did like playing though. I still like to play. Enough that I put together Krasuno’s Municipal Team even. Coaches are stuck on the sidelines. That frustrates me to no end.”
“Oh…”
“And I don’t wanna go back to that gym!”
“What?! Do you have bad memories of the place…?”
“No. Just the opposite! My whole teenage life was in that building.”
“Then why…?”
“The gym, the clubroom…even if all those places are exactly the way they were…They’re a space…an atmosphere…I just can’t go back to. Those few years were special. It had an air to it that existed only during that time. Even if I go back there and it all looks exactly the same…it isn’t really the place it was. It’s someone else’s place now.” The shopkeeper looks up into the sky with a sentimental look.
“The nostalgia is too much, is it?” Takeda says looking wistful.
“S-Shut up!” The shopkeeper yells embarrassed. “Anyway! I like that place too much! That’s why I’m not going back!”
“...Even if Nekoma High School is coming for a practice game?” Takeda says determined.
“?!” The shopkeeper looks at the teacher in shock.
“The last day of golden week…we’ll be having a game with them for the first time in five years.”
“What did you say…?”
“Nekoma is coming. Old Coach Nekomata, close friends with Coach Ukai, recently came out of retirement. When I heard that, I requested to have a practice game with them. Nekoma and KArasuno were closest during your time, right?”
“Yeah…”
“Come to think of it…they mentioned that their current assistant coach was the team’s setter seven or eight years ago.”
‘Their setter?! Seven of eight years ago?!’
-Flashback-
“We’re gonna do it.” A Nekoma player says. “This will be the year we meet at Nationals.”
“Yeah.” The younger shopkeeper responds.
-Flashback End-
“You were a student seven or eight years ago, correct? Then I guess this person may be someone you know.”
“You…” The shopkeeper begins. “Are you baiting me?!”
“WAAAH!!” Takeda responds while being held by his collar and shaken. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”
“I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU! YOU’RE SERIOUSLY BAITING ME! IT’S SO OBVIOUS!! IF YOU THINK I’M GONNA FALL FOR SOMETHING THAT BLATANT, YOU’D BETTER TELL ME WHEN THEIR NEXT PRACTICE STARTS!! NOW!! SPILL!!”
“I’m sorry…what?”
“If NEkoma’s coming, I can’t have my juniors disgracing themselves! Wait right there, I’m getting changed.”
“O-Oh! Okay!” Takeda replies happily.
“Ma! Watch the store wouldja?”
“Yes…!” Takeda whispers.
“Oh. I know.” The shopkeeper says while dialing his phone. “Hellos? Tatsuan?”
-Karasuno Gym-
“Hey, Noya?” Tanaka says.
“Hm?”
“You said you did special training while you were away from the team. What kind?”
“Digging drills mostly. I focused especially on blocked ball retrieval. I’m still not all that great at it…but if I can get that follow-up stuff down pat, you guys won’t have to worry about much when you spike anymore, right?” Tanaka looks at Noya in shock. ‘Wow. And every time I look at him, it seems he’s got new bruises too…’ Tanaka thinks.
“Noya, you’re the coolest, bestest guy ever…!” Tanaka shouts as he bursts into tears.
“Dwah?! Wait, are you crying?!” Noya asks worriedly.
“What is going on? Why is Tanaka crying?” You ask Kiyoko as the two of you are putting water bottles and towels on the bench.
“Just ignore them.” Kiyoko responds flatly.
“But-” You go to say but are interrupted by Takeda opening the door and calling out to everyone.
“Hello, everyone!”
“Gather round-huh?!” Daichi says but is shocked by what he sees.
“Everyone allow me to introduce to you… Keishin Ukai. As of today, he will be your coach!!” Takeda announces.
“A coach?! Really?!” Daichi asks.
“Only until your game with Nekoma.” Ukai says.
“Oh…” Daichi says disappointed.
“Wait. The dude from Sakanoshita Market is gonna be our coach? Really?” Tanaka asks.
“Yes! He is a Karasuno alumnus and the grandson of The Great Coach Ukai!” Takeda answers.
“Whaaa?!” Tanaka and Suga exclaim.
“Isn’t your name Sakanoshita? Uh, Coach?” Hinata asks.
“Nope. The store belongs to my mom’s family.” Ukai answers before addressing the team. “Right. We’re short on time, so let’s get started! I wanna see where you guys are at, so we’ll be having a practice game at 6:30. Our opponents are already on their way.”
“Uh, our opponents…?” Daichi asks,
“Yep! The Karasuno Municipal Team.”

“They’re a Tokyo school, and I hear they used to be very good.” Takeda begins. “It’s Nekoma High School.”
“Nekoma in Tokyo?” Hinata wonders.
“Nekoma? You mean the school that was supposedly our biggest rival for many years?” Suga asks Takeda.
“The very same!” He replies. “If I recall correctly, they’re known as The Cats.”
“Yeah!” Takeda begins. “We learned about them last year. See, our old coach and theirs were supposed to be big rivals, like, forever. So they’d always hold practice games together.”
“Really?”
“I hear both our teams were equally good and played well off each other, so their practice games were worth the long trip.” Suga adds. “In fact, they were such good games that people in the area would come by and watch. A must-watch game!! It was The Cats and The Crows in an all-out Dumpster Battle! or something…”
“Was it really that special?” Tsukishima asks.
“A lot of us talked about how we’d like to try playing them sometime.” Suga expresses.
“I can’t wait to watch you guys!” You say excitedly.
“But we lost contact with them years ago. How did you…?” Daichi asks Takeda.
“I’ll tell you more about the details later.” Takeda begins.
‘He must have begged…’ You assume.
“But since the moment I heard about our friendly rival Nekoma… I’ve really wanted to put together a new grudge match for our teams.” Takeda continues. “And once he hears we’re playing Nekoma… I’m sure he’ll finally make a move.” You and Daichi look at Takeda questionably.
-Meanwhile at Sakenashita Market-
*ACHOO!!* A certain shopkeeper sneezes before helping a few students check out.
-Karasuno Gym-
“Okay!” Dachi shouts to get everyone’s attention. “Let’s not waste the chance that this practice game will give us! Everybody gets ready to work twice as hard in practice and during the training camp!”
“Yessir!”
“A Tokyo team huh? *Heh Heh* Those city slickers don’t know what kind of beating they’re in for.” Tanaka says mischievously.
“City Slickers?” You whisper as Tsukishima says the same thing but in a mocking manner.
“Tsukishima, you smarmy punk! Shut it!” Tanaka demands angrily.
“Daichi,” Noya says from next to said captain. “I’m sorry…but…I won’t play in that practice game.”
“Because Asahi isn’t back?” Daichi asks only to receive silence as an answer. “Listen. I know you’re upset at him because you believe he ran away, but don’t you think you’re taking this too far?”
“Shoyo’s a good kid.” Noya starts. “The other rookies are all kinda weird, but they’re fun in their own ways. With all of them on board, I think the team is headed in a really good direction. I do want to practice with them. I do want to play with them. But… If we go into that practice game, and I play with the team, and we win…that’ll be like saying we’re perfectly okay without Asahi. That we can win without him. After all that time we spent playing together…I don’t want to say that everything will be okay and we can without him. I know it’s selfish, and I’m sorry.”
“Okay. But at least come along to the camp.” Daichi responds.
“Noya-san! Noya-san! Do it again! Do the Rolling Thunder again!!” Hinata exclaims excitedly.
-Small Timeskip, After Practice-
You, Hinata, and Kageyama are standing together as the two boys are drinking from the water bottles that you brought them.
“Hey, Kageyama? I wonder…if Asahi-san comes back, will everything work out with Suga-san and Noya-san?” Hinata asks.
“Heck if I know.” Kageyama replies.
“Suga says Asahi tends to feel responsible for something, but I think he is like that too.” You interject.
“Yeah, I bet both of them are thinking that it’s their fault.” Kageyama starts. “But y’know? You can’t win a volleyball match by yourself.”
“!?”
“!?”
“What, you’re really gonna say that?!” Hinata exclaims while pointing at Kageyama accusingly. ‘Oh boy. Here we go…’ You think. “I still clearly remember your most famous line, y’know!!” Hinata pushes his hair down to look like Kageyama’s and begins speaking like him. “I think I’d rather do it all myself. All the setting, spiking, serving– everything!” You giggle at the boy and see that Kageyama isn’t happy.
“Would you just freaking drop it?!” Kageyama yells while picking Hinata up by the collar of his shirt.
“I’d rather do everything myself!” Hinata continues. This causes KAgeyama to throw the boy. Hinata spins in the air a few times before landing perfectly on his feet. ‘How in the…?’ You think. Still in the position as when he landed, Hinata speaks seriously.
“Even though everybody on this side of the net is supposed to be an ally…I don’t like it when all of us on “this” side are all awkward around each other.”
“I don’t either. It doesn’t feel right.” You add.
“I wonder if there’s anything that we could do to get Asahi-san to come back.” Hinata says. ‘Hmm…’ You think.
-The Next Day, Lunch Break-
“E-Excuse me…?” You say standing in the doorway of classroom 3-3. A student comes up to you and asks if there’s anything they can help you with.
“I-I’m looking for Azumane-senpai…” You reply shyly. The student points to Asahi and you thank them before going over to the third year. “Asahi?” The said boy looks at you surprised.
“(Y/N)? What are you doing here?” Ashai asks.
“Hi, to you too.” You say jokingly.
“! I-I’m so sorry! I didn’t-” Asahi panics.
“It’s okay! I was just joking!” You hear a sigh of relief from the boy. “I’m here to talk to you.”
“About what?”
“...The volleyball club…” You instantly see his mood change.
“I don’t really-” He begins.
“I know you don’t want to talk about it.” You interrupt. “You don’t have to say anything, but please just listen to what I say!” You finish with a bow.
“...Okay.” He hesitantly says. You stand upright and continue to talk.
”I don’t know exactly what you’re going through but I do know what it’s like to not want to play. I’ve had my doubts about not being good enough and the feeling of holding everyone back.” He looks at you with slight shock when he sees the defeated look on your face. “I didn't want to go back for the reason of thinking my team would be better without me. That thought clouded my mind for longer than I’d like to admit.” You say with a slight chuckle. “At that time I wouldn’t touch a volleyball. Every time I looked at one it would remind me of my team, and it hurt.”
“What did you end up doing?” He asks. You smile.
“I got pulled out of my head and back to my senses by my friend…”
-Flashback-
You were sitting under a tree outside the school having lunch. It was peaceful and relaxing, yet you weren’t relaxed. You were troubled. You were sad. But mostly, you were scared. You had forgotten the feeling of a volleyball in your hands. The feeling of the sting of receiving a spike, the feeling of saving the ball from touching the ground, the feeling of the pain when your knees would hit the ground when you would dig for the ball. The worst feeling was you forgot the rush of a game, the joy of winning, the heartbreak of losing, and the feeling of being a part of a team. You’re pulled out of your thoughts when a shadow blocks your view. You look up to see your friend looking at you nervously.
“Can I sit with you?” She asks.
“Sure.” You answer before she sits next to you. There’s an awkward silence before she speaks.
“The team misses you. I miss you.”
“I doubt the team missed me. All I ever did was hold you guys back…” You say sadly.
“What?!” She looks at you shocked. “That’s what you think?!” You look at her with wide eyes. You’ve never seen her this worked up, even in a game, she’s always calm.
“It’s true!”
“You can’t be serious. You’re going to listen to what those girls said?” You think back to when two of your upperclassman teammates told you that you were worthless after losing a game. During this game, you couldn’t receive a majority of the spikes from the other team. They said it was your fault that the team lost. And every day at practice they made sure to remind you.
“I-”
“No. It wasn’t your fault. The other team was solid and powerful. They were just better.”
“...”
“...Please come back to the team. We need you.”
“I don’t know…”
“Those girls aren’t on the team anymore.”
“...”
“Please (Y/N)... At least think about it.” She says as she gets up. You have your head hung but know that she’s standing in front of you again. “We want you back.” She finishes before walking away. “(Y/N).” You look up to see her holding a volleyball. But it’s not just any volleyball, it’s the one your sensei gave you. “Catch.” She says before throwing the ball at you. You catch it and as you’re holding it you realize how much you miss volleyball. You look away from the ball only to see that your friend is no longer in sight. You look back to your ball and smile.
-Flashback End-
After telling Asahi about your past you look at him only to see he has an unreadable expression. This makes you worried that you shared too much which causes you to blush and get nervous.
“I-I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have bored you with my pity story.” Ashai was about to respond but you continued talking. “ I should get going. Thank you for listening to me.” You bow and head for the classroom door, leaving Asahi stunned. You stop in the doorway and speak one last time without turning around. “Please consider coming back. Your friends miss you. And if you have forgotten the feeling of breaking through the wall…just try to remember how happy you were when you would spike and earn a point. Also the feeling of celebrating with your team, your friends.” With that, you continue out of the classroom. Ashai sits at his desk shocked. ‘How…’ He thinks not being able to finish his thought due to your head popping into the doorway.
“...”
“...”
“...So…”
