Marilyn Monroe and José Bolaños at the Golden Globes where she won the award for World Film Favorite Female 1961
To the event Marilyn wore a green sequinned Norman Norrell dress alongside emerald and diamond earrings. She had purchased the dress the previous year to wear at a party with Frank Sinatra (whom gifted her the earrings) and during a photoshoot with Douglas Kirkland in November 1961.
Following her gall bladder surgery, Marilyn had lost weight. Concerned that the original design of the dress might flatten her bustline, her maid, Hazel, attached a discreet strap around her neck, transforming the dress into a halter style, which resulted in a crowl neck design. Marilyn wanted an exposed back, so she opted not to use the side straps, instead integrating them into the dress’s front.

Marilyn Monroe left Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. She had entered the hospital on February 17 to receive the rest she so desperately needed. Just prior to her stay at Columbia, emotionally exhausted from filming The Misfits, her divorce from third husband Arthur Miller, and the sudden death of Clark Gable, Mariltn had been committed by her psychoanalyst Dr. Marianne Kris to the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic in New York. She thought she was going in a rest cure there. Instead she was escorted to a padded cell. The four days she spent in the psych ward proved to be among the most distressing of her life. She wrote a letter to Lee Strasberg begging for help. unfortunately the Strasbergs couldn’t get her released. Eventually Joe DiMaggio managed to get Dr. Kris to discharge Marilyn. After which Marilyn then went into Columbia for the rest she initally had sought.

Marilyn Monroe pays a fine to the state of Los Angeles after being summoned to court. She had three tickets against her: driving without a license, driving with an expired license and failure to show up when first summoned. She excused her absence with her studying acting in New York City. The judge was not having it and snapped back at her saying if he wanted to see her act he would pay to do so in a theatre.

Marilyn Monroe posing as Jean Harlow, Theda Bara, Clara Bow, Lillian Russell and Marlene Dietrich photoshoot for LIFE magazine, photographs by Richard Avedon.
Marilyn Monroe as Jean Harlow, Theda Bara, Clara Bow, Lillian Russell and Marlene Dietrich photographed by Richard Avedon to recreate images of five celebrated actresses of different eras. Entitled “Fabled Enchantresses” the piece was part of the magazine’s December 22 “Christmas” issue. Avedon found in Marilyn an easy subject to work with.
QUOTE OF THE DAY ↓
“She was so lovely and too young to die. God bless her… I never met Marilyn Monroe, but if I had, I would have tried very hard to help her. A sex symbol is a heavy load to carry when one is tired, hurt, and bewildered.” - Clara Bow

Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland at the Golden Globes Awards.
QUOTE OF THE DAY ↓
I knew Marilyn and loved her dearly. She asked me for help. Me! I didn’t know what to tell her. One night at a party at Clifton Webb’s house, Marilyn followed me from room to room. "I don’t want to get too far away from you, I’m scared." I told her, "We’re all scared. I’m scared too." - Judy Garland

Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon on the set of “Some Like It Hot”
QUOTE OF THE DAY ↓
“Marilyn had an incredible charisma that was so rare, I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like it. She had a lot of talent as an actress and she used that talent to the best of her ability as well as her skills as a comedienne, which worked out marvelously for her as with that combined, she created that certain magic on film. I loved working with her and a lot of people say that is clear in our scenes together. I absolutely adored her and we got on wonderfully.” - Jack Lemmon

Marilyn Monroe chats with Carl Sandburg. Photographs by Arnold Newman.
QUOTE OF THE DAY ↓
“She was not the usual movie idol. There was something democratic about her. Why, she was the type who would join in and wash the supper dishes even if you didn’t ask her. She knew I had an appreciation of her from two angles… first as a personality and then as an actress. She had a mind out of the ordinary for show people. I found her fairly well read. I gave her a book of my complete poetry. I wanted her to have it. Thirty-six is just too young to die. I wish I could have been with her that day… I believe I could have persuaded her not to take her life. She had so much to live for. I think it’s entirely possible that Marilyn had a hard time with her sleep. She talked a lot about wanting a good sleep. Gosh, there were a lot of people who loved her. She had loyal fans. There was no pretenses about Marilyn Monroe.” - Carl Sandburg
