alyanette au where by some turn of events, alya starts talking to the person who lives in the room next to her through the walls. conversation is easy with them, so easy, in fact, that it’s weeks before she realizes she’s never gotten the other’s name. so she gets it- and marinette is a perfect piece to the puzzle alya’s been building in her head.
for all the time she’s spent talking to her mysterious neighbor, she’s never seen her.
and one day, she mentions this to adrien, who owns the apartment complex (and gives her a bangin discount of free rent), and is utterly shocked when he asks what she means.
because nobody lives in the room next to hers, no one’s been in that room for years, even when it was under management of the complex’s previous owner. he says that he checks in on it periodically and there’s never been signs of someone living there either.
alya’s head spins at this information, and when she gets back to her room, she mulls it over. she hasn’t been hearing things, talking to herself. right?
as she thinks about it, and starts to doubt everything she thought about marinette- the voice sounds again
alya doesn’t respond at first, but when marinette speaks again, it’s confirmation enough that she’s real. alya relaxes slightly, even though the mystery surrounding her friend is kind of mind-boggling
she leaves it alone for a little while, but eventually, the curiosity gets the best of her, and she brings it up to marinette.
marinette goes quiet, and doesn’t talk to alya for a few days. alya thinks she blew it- that she made marinette angry, or upset her, or scared her away, even.
but marinette comes back. she apologizes first, for disappearing, and then asks if she and alya could meet face to face. she says it’s easier to explain that way.
alya thinks it odd, but agrees, and gets up to go open her door. only, before she makes it over, marinette’s voice is suddenly in her room, and alya whips around.
at first, she doesn’t see anything, and then-
a shimmer of something. barely noticeable, but alya’s always been good at seeing what others might miss. and this? she sees it. and she watches it as it grows clearer, into a barely transparent person wearing what can only be a nervous expression
“you’re- you’re-” alya starts
and then, at the same time,
“a ghost?”
“really cute”
silence, then
“wait, a ghost?”
“you think i’m cute?”
and anyways alya finds out marinette’s a ghost and the reason no one’s lived in the room next door is because she always kind of nudges people away from choosing it and this starts a series of events and investigations into why marinette’s a ghost and why she’s stuck in the world of the living and along the way they discover their feelings for one another and get involved in a lot of shenanigans and alya moves into marinette’s room and they become girlfriends

Here’s a list of all the cool stuff Alya’s done in canon because she’s amazing and it’s what she deserves:
- She almost got sacrificed to the sun god, Ra, for her pure soul
- In Stormy Weather, she feigned having an allergic reaction to an apple and offered to babysit Manon so Marinette could have the opportunity to model with Adrien
- She dressed in a cardboard box suit and pretended to be an akuma so that Principal Damocles could save the day as his hero persona
- For her good deed during Heroes’ Day, Alya talked with the mayor and got approval to equip public buildings with disabled access so that handicapped kids could attend Françoise Dupont
- She almost wielded not one, not two, but THREE different miraculous,,, what an icon
- She’s sacrificed herself to save those she cares about multiple times (Shoving Ladybug out of harm’s way in Style Queen, fending off La Befana with glass plates to defend Marinette, taking the blunt of Dark Cupid’s arrow for Nino in Mayura)
- She and Nino do parkour together so that they’re always ready for any hero work Ladybug may have for them
- Guys she can RAP
- She tried to tickle-ambush Nino (before she came face to face with her akumatized self OOP)
- While Marinette and Adrien are dancing together in Despair Bear, Alya and Nino dance over, Alya fixes their hands and posture, and proceeds to twirl back into her dance with Nino
- Her observational skills and courageous nature have helped Ladybug and Chat Noir on various occasions
- In Sapotis’s french dub, Alya literally says “nya nya!” what a DORK
- When Marinette excitedly hugs Alya who, in response, gives her the Alya Pats ™
- She was so dang excited when she became Rena Rouge???? The wonder??? The awe???
- Alya initiating the tickle fight with Marinette??? Have you seen anything more precious in your life??
- Alya literally carries a picture of her and Marinette around guys i can’t-
- Alya ultimately choosing to return the fox miraculous and solidifying how much she values Ladybug’s support and new companionship over her own dreams/desires to be a permanent wielder??? dudes???
- When she called Nino’s attention just so he’d turn his head and get poked on the cheek, and she found it absolutely hilarious
- She’s helped Marinette babysit Manon on multiple occasions, whether so Marinette could hang out with Adrien or “tell her parents something in the bakery” , like she did in Stormy Weather and Prime Queen respectively
- She’s getting better at her illusions as Rena Rouge!!! While her first illusion only used the sense of sight, her most recent ones used smell (luring the panthers in Syren) and sound (making Ladybug look and sound exactly like Chloè to trick Miraculer) too!!!
- She stood by Marinette’s side when she was falsely accused even with supposed evidence to suggest otherwise because she knows her best friend would never do anything she was accused of,,,,she spent the day searching for clues and to prove Marinette’s innocence,,,we stan a queen,,,

i have IMMENSE feelings over marinette being in love with alya but believing that alya is in love with ladybug and so she doesn’t pursue anything so as not to put her in danger, even though alya is in love with marinette too
and marinette wondering if she could ever be enough for a girl who’s always chased after superheroes
and alya, trying her damnedest to make marinette see that she doesn’t need a superhero or some out-of-a-fairy-tail love story and that she, marinette, is enough

Alya seriously doesn’t deserve her characterisation in canon after Astruc took over.
in S1 she’s Marinette’s best friend, she’s basically the reason why Marinette went back to being Ladybug, she jumps to conclusions in Lady Wifi but she learns from it and goes back to trying to find evidence instead of pushing her own narrative.
When Marinette refuses to burst Adrien’s bubble and lets him believe the scarf is from his father, Alya doesn’t push her to act anyway, just reassures Marinette that she’s a good person and someday Adrien will see that too.
And when Marinette gets in over her head in Gamer Alya draws a line because as much as she knows Marinette wants to hang out with Adrien, she recognises that the championship is Serious Business and Marinette can’t just barge in last minute. Discourse about Gamer aside, Alya knows Marinette isn’t playing because she wants to win, and she tries to warn her off of it.
and then S2 and S3 came in and stomped on all of that.
S1 Alya would have figured by now that Marinette will talk to Adrien on her own terms. S1 Alya wouldn’t keep pushing Marinette to go for Adrien and break up him and Kagami. And S1 Alya especially wouldn’t have put up with everything about Lila.
Post-S1 Alya should have had an arc of her own about how she’s backing off on Ladybug’s identity because she has to hide her own identity as Rena Rouge now, and how seriously dangerous it would be for her loved ones if anyone found out she had a Miraculous. Instead of immediately collapsing any identity shenanigans between her and Nino, she should have had some momentary crisis about hiding secrets from her boyfriend, and Nino himself might have felt a little slighted by how Alya is disappearing more often on him.
Instead everything about Alya ultimately comes back to the Love Square, because everything in this god damned show comes back to the Love Square. subplots who?
Nino doesn’t get as harsh of a change in characterisation because he just doesn’t show up half the time and even then it’s just to point how Marinette and Adrien are the only single people of their friend group and HEY DID YOU FORGET ABOUT THE LOVE SQUARE BECAUSE THE SQUARE IS VERY IMPORTANT LOOK AT THE FUCKING SQUARE
we could have gotten Nino feeling left out because all of his main friends have a habit of ghosting him or seeing his chill demeanour finally snapping because no one will tell him anything, maybe he prods at the status quo a bit by pointing out how Marinette, Adrien, AND Alya have the same “always vanishes during an akuma attack” or something. Maybe Alya ends up dumping babysitting on him because she’s so exhausted from being Rena Rouge and it’s not a sign that she’s negligent, she’s just massively overworked and very new to juggling double lives.
these characters could be CHARACTERS in their own rights instead of being accessories to the most static romance plot ever.
but no, we gotta look at the fucking square.
