Online Courses for Language Lovers (that arenât languages)
I wanted to let fellow language learners know about some great courses that I think will help you out since they cover topics that arenât typically taught in language classes. They cover various topics such as culture, linguistics, and psychology that will round out your language education. They are all MOOCs which means that they are free online courses available to the public.Â
Exploring Language and Cultures:Â You will learn about the benefits and challenges of meeting people from different cultures, what it means to be plurilingual and pluricultural, and the ways in which language and human communities shape each other. You also will look at the role of intercultural competence at the workplace, reflect on the use of English as lingua franca in international contexts, and get a flavor of the skills involved in language-related professions such as translation and interpreting.
What is language?: An applied linguistic perspective: This serves as an introduction to the discipline of applied linguistics. It examines what is meant by âlanguageâ, what its main characteristics are, and how human language differs from communication between other animals. It also asks whether theoretical knowledge about language can be applied to professional practice. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Intercultural Communication: This free online course will help you better understand cross-cultural complexity; cultivate your awareness of your own and othersâ cultural identities; highlight some notable variations in communication styles and cultural values; and signpost paths towards building your intercultural competence.
Multilingual Practices: In this course, you will identify central aspects around societal and individual multilingualism, evaluate the benefits of multilingualism of both minority and migrant speakers, identify issues that arise when people who do not share the same languages meet, critically evaluate multilingual language policies for both migrant and minority languages, and investigate multilingual practices.
Miracles of Human Language: An Introduction to Linguistics: This course introduces you to linguistics, featuring interviews with well-known linguists and with speakers of many different languages. Join us to explore the miracles of human language!
Introduction to Linguistics: In this course, youâll get an introduction to the main approaches used in linguistic research, including linguistic experiments and discourse analysis. Youâll find out about the key methods used in linguistic descriptions, and some of the everyday âmythsâ about language. Youâll discover how linguistic researchers turn our ideas about language into linguistic knowledge.
The Bilingual Brain: This course explores the brain bases of bilingualism by discussing literature relevant to differences in age of initial learning, proficiency, and control in the nonverbal, single language and dual-language literature.  Participants will learn about the latest research related to how humans learn one or two languages and other cognitive skills. Course starts May 5, 2019.Â
Introduction to Lexical and Semantic Typology:Â The aim of the course is to obtain the idea of the lexicon as a complex system and to get the methodology of the typological approach to the lexicon cross-linguistically, as well as to learn about the general mechanisms of semantic shift and their typological relevance. Course starts May 5, 2019.
Language Revival: Securing the Future of Endangered Languages:Â Learn how the worldâs endangered languages are revived and why this process is critical to preserving cultural identity. Â Course is archived but the material is accessible.
Introduction to Applied Linguistics and TESOL: Youâll explore real-world examples of applied linguistics, such as forensic linguistics and language assessment. Youâll look at the fieldâs impact on important issues - for example, reducing gender bias in language use and simplifying legal language. Youâll find out what applied linguists do through a series of case studies. Specialists will work through problems and show you applied linguistic research methods to solve them.

Iâm fluent in portuguese. What now?
This post contains a list of brazilian documentaries, movies, TV shows, books, and novelas(we donât call them telenovelas) thatâll help you understand how our language is affected by accents, regionalisms, levels of scholarity, slangs, and such.
Donât feel bad if you canât understand something. We canât either, sometimes.
Iâve watched O Auto da Compadecida maybe 6 times until I could comprehend everything. That happens mostly because Iâm from Rio and the story takes place in ParaĂba(very far from here). Also because of income differences, lifestyle differences, etc.
Click on the titles to watch it. Iâll link it with english subtitles whenever possible.
They might not be in HD, but itâs not hard to find a version in better quality.
This list will have tagged such as:
S - slang-heavy;
R - heavy in regionalisms and idiomatic expressions;
LS - low scholarity effects on the language;
G - gringos(foreigners) speaking portuguese;
OT - old-timey portuguese.
Brazil is very fortunate to be rich in works with such cultural representation like these, so, eventually, this list might get a part 2.
My faves will be tagged with a *
Enjoy.

Subordinating Conjunctions in German
As part of 100 Days of Languages
Day 16: learn 1 grammatical concept. (I already knew how to use these, but now I have a better grasp of them)
While writing sentences in German you can use a subordinating conjunction to join a main clause (Hauptsatz) with a subordinate clause (Nebensatz). When you use one, the word order of the sentence is changed sending the verb to the end of the sentence. Thereâs many subordinating conjunctions, Iâll go through some.
Als â when (past events)
Als sie in Italien war, hat sie viele Menschen getroffen.
When she was in Italy, she met many people.
Bevor â before
An wen denkst du, bevor du einschlÀfst?
Who do you think about before going to bed?
Dass â that
Ich denke, dass wir uns nicht treffen sollen.
I think we shouldnât see each other.
Damit â so that
Sie hat Medizin in der UniversitĂ€t studiert, damit sie eine Ărztin werden kann.
She studied medicine in the university so that she could become a doctor.
Nachdem â after
Nachdem ich nach Deutschland gereist bin, esse ich mehr Brot.
After I travelled to Germany, I eat more bread.
Ob â if
Sie hat mich gefragt, ob du zurĂŒck nach Hause kommst.
She asked me if you are coming back home.
Obwohl â although/even though
Er isst NĂŒsse, obwohl er allergisch ist.
He eats nuts even though he is allergic.
Seit â since
Sara wohnt in Schleiz, seit sie geboren ist.
Sara lives in Schleiz since she was born.
Sobald â as soon as
Er wird Japanisch lernen, sobald er fertig mit Französisch ist.
He will learn Japanese, as soon as he is done with French.

Soviel sie weist, Pamela mag auch MĂ€dchen.
For all she knows, Lara also likes girls.

Soweit ich mich erinnern kann, dieser Film ist ĂŒber Vampire.
As far as I can remember, this film is about vampires.
Sowie â as soon as
Sie wird ihr Buch lesen, sowie sie mit Hausaufgaben fertig ist.
She will read her book, as soon as she is done with homework.
WĂ€hrend â during/while
WÀhrend wir ins Kino gehen, könnten wir auch etwas essen.
While we go to the cinema, we could also eat something.
Weil â because
Ich lerne Deutsch, weil es sehr schön ist.
I learn German because it is really beautiful.
Wie â how
Wir haben keine Idee, wie die Lampe kaputt gegangen ist.

Using the word: embora
In all my years of language learning no word has ever confused me more than âemboraâ so in case anyone out there is having the same problem that i had i decided to make this post!
Ok so embora basically has 2 meanings:
1.Even though/ but
2. To go/leave
The first meaning is easy to understand thereâs not much to say about it so Iâll just give a few examples:
Eu gosto de comer carne embora nĂŁo coma muita (I like eating meat even though I donât eat much)
Eu preciso de fazer isso embora nao vou a face-lo (I need to do that but Iâm not going to)
itâ can be interchangeable with âmesmoâ and âaindaâ
NOW the second meaning is what I found so confusing and I donât even know why, because itâs pretty simple:
preciso ir embora
vamos embora
i thought embora meant to leave and yes, it does mean to leave BUT it involves the action of leaving a place to go somewhere else or do something else, it refers to stopping what you are doing and replace it with something else.
So thatâs it! now vai embora!

PortuguĂȘses no Mundo I donât know about you but I love podcasts about travel! This free podcast is about world travel and it is useful for Portuguese learners because each episode follows the same structure. In each episode, the host interviews a Portuguese person whoâs living in another country, the host asks the same questions to each guest (âWhy did you move to that country?â, âWhat surprised you the most about living there?â, âWhat do you miss most about Portugal?â, etc.).Â

Check out âA Falarâ (âspeakingâ) for videos about spoken Portuguese, âA Ouvirâ (âlisteningâ) for a variety of audio exercises, and âA Brincarâ (âplayingâ) for some games. Â
 Intermediate Brazilian Portuguese
NHK World Radio Japão This is great for intermediate and advanced speakers you can accustom yourself to listening to native speakers who are talking clearly at full speed. HK World News broadcasts a daily news program from Tokyo in dozens of languages, including Brazilian Portuguese.
Cinem(ação) This is a popular film-related podcasts in Brazil. It airs weekly, the hosts chat about one or more films released that week. Yu can also use this as a source of film recommendations.
Advanced European PortugueseÂ
Conta-me Tudo (Tell Me Everything) Each episode of these podcasts features a different speaker telling his or her fascinating tale to an audience. Topics are varied and include narrow escapes from death, odd ways to begin a career, and a terrible idea for a birthday present. The speakers all speak quickly, so the stories are perfect for advanced learners.
Advanced Brazilian Portuguese
CBTV Canal Brasil for iOS, Android and Roku is a completely free live TV channel, unfortunately itâs only available in the United States. It broadcasts from Florida and includes news, sports, history, health, and even pets! Because itâs intended for native Brasileiros, the content is pretty advanced.

đ§đ¶French Songs Masterpostđ¶đ«đ·
French native here !
I absolutely love french in music, especially as it comes in such wide range from political songs to kindda nsfw one. French is a language where you can really play around to write interesting and/or funny songs. This is what I listen often and like !
Ill give a youtube link to every songs, but you can probably find better quality on deezer and stuff, especialy for the old one. I'll also try to sum up each song so you can grab them a lil better, hopefully !
Charles Aznavour - Emmenez moi (1968) A classic. I love it. Makes me wanna travel and have a break lol. Summary : Aznavour want a BRAEK.
đ” Emmenez-moi au bout de la terre
Emmenez-moi au pays des merveilles
l me semble que la misĂšre
Serait moins pénible au soleil
Cyril Mokaiesh - Communiste (2011) Political stuff ; its trashing big companies and capitalism/liberalism. Summary : Mokaiesh talks about all the thing he doesnt like etc. and if it does link him to communism, then he's communist and whatev. i love it.
đ” ça les perdra
De mondialiser l'injustice
D's'en asperger de bénéfices
Ăa les perdra
Anne Sylvestre - La faute Ă Eve (1986) Feminism ! heck yeah ! hard take on how everything is blamed on women, thanks to đ¶christianistics traditiooonđ¶ Summary : Ăšve does her best but Adam is a piece of shit ungreatful fuck.
đ” "Moi, je vais me mettre en grĂšve
J'irai pas au paradis
Non, mais qu'est-ce qu'Il s'imagine ?
J'irai en enfer tout droit
Le bon Dieu est misogyne
Mais le diable, il ne l'est pas
POLO & PAN - Canopée (2016) sweet love song ! my fav. one of my fav groups actually. wonderful lyrics. this on has quite the complicate vocabulary, but you Should Definitely check their other stuff ; its marvelous. Summary : Two ppl living their best in amazonia. the birds are singing, the sun is shining, the trees are tall and green !
đ” Des oiseaux nous chantaient leur mĂ©lopĂ©e
Et nous vivions heureux dans la canopée
Dartek - Les Kassos this one is very nsfw LMAO hard dubstep i think ? the lyrics comes from a french cartoon, Les Kassos. U can check it out too if u like trash humor. Uh, im not especialy fond of it, but if its ur thing ! the song is still dope af Summary : uhh. hallucinations ? mention of sex and drugs ? uhu
Edith Piaf - L'homme Ă la moto Would who i be if i didnt put miss Edith Piaf in here ?! Not one of her most popular tune tho ! and what a shame. I absolutely love that one and never miss a chance to yeLL IT OUT in the forest w/ my bff. a blast. Summary : A motorcyclist scares the shit out of the country side with his bike. One day he hits a train and THE END !
đ” Il portait des culottes, des bottes de moto

GERMAN YOUTUBERS MEGAPOST
Hey German Study Buddies,
I think watching German youtube for the past year or so has allowed my German to improve so much. Adopting the German colloquialisms and listening to the fluency and grammar structures in the videos has really helped me so so much! For anybody learning a language: youtube is the best!
Not only is it fun to watch the many funny videos or hauls (yesâŠI have obsession with clothing hauls), but also you can learn so much by just continually listening to the German. Anyway, it took me a while to find these German youtubers so I thought I would share them in one big master post here:
PS: if you know any other good German youtubers let me know and Iâll add to the list! :)
PPS: I put a little heart next to my favourite ones x
