Online Courses for Language Lovers (that aren’t languages)
Tumblr media
I wanted to let fellow language learners know about some great courses that I think will help you out since they cover topics that aren’t typically taught in language classes. They cover various topics such as culture, linguistics, and psychology that will round out your language education. They are all MOOCs which means that they are free online courses available to the public.
Exploring Language and Cultures:  You will learn about the benefits and challenges of meeting people from different cultures, what it means to be plurilingual and pluricultural, and the ways in which language and human communities shape each other. You also will look at the role of intercultural competence at the workplace, reflect on the use of English as lingua franca in international contexts, and get a flavor of the skills involved in language-related professions such as translation and interpreting.
What is language?: An applied linguistic perspective: This serves as an introduction to the discipline of applied linguistics. It examines what is meant by ‘language’, what its main characteristics are, and how human language differs from communication between other animals. It also asks whether theoretical knowledge about language can be applied to professional practice.
Intercultural Communication: This free online course will help you better understand cross-cultural complexity; cultivate your awareness of your own and others’ cultural identities; highlight some notable variations in communication styles and cultural values; and signpost paths towards building your intercultural competence.
Multilingual Practices: In this course, you will identify central aspects around societal and individual multilingualism, evaluate the benefits of multilingualism of both minority and migrant speakers, identify issues that arise when people who do not share the same languages meet, critically evaluate multilingual language policies for both migrant and minority languages, and investigate multilingual practices.
Miracles of Human Language: An Introduction to Linguistics: This course introduces you to linguistics, featuring interviews with well-known linguists and with speakers of many different languages. Join us to explore the miracles of human language!
Introduction to Linguistics: In this course, you’ll get an introduction to the main approaches used in linguistic research, including linguistic experiments and discourse analysis. You’ll find out about the key methods used in linguistic descriptions, and some of the everyday ‘myths’ about language. You’ll discover how linguistic researchers turn our ideas about language into linguistic knowledge.
The Bilingual Brain: This course explores the brain bases of bilingualism by discussing literature relevant to differences in age of initial learning, proficiency, and control in the nonverbal, single language and dual-language literature.  Participants will learn about the latest research related to how humans learn one or two languages and other cognitive skills. Course starts May 5, 2019.
Introduction to Lexical and Semantic Typology:  The aim of the course is to obtain the idea of the lexicon as a complex system and to get the methodology of the typological approach to the lexicon cross-linguistically, as well as to learn about the general mechanisms of semantic shift and their typological relevance. Course starts May 5, 2019.
Language Revival: Securing the Future of Endangered Languages: Learn how the world’s endangered languages are revived and why this process is critical to preserving cultural identity.  Course is archived but the material is accessible.
Introduction to Applied Linguistics and TESOL: You’ll explore real-world examples of applied linguistics, such as forensic linguistics and language assessment. You’ll look at the field’s impact on important issues - for example, reducing gender bias in language use and simplifying legal language. You’ll find out what applied linguists do through a series of case studies. Specialists will work through problems and show you applied linguistic research methods to solve them.

I’m fluent in portuguese. What now?
This post contains a list of brazilian documentaries, movies, TV shows, books, and novelas(we don’t call them telenovelas) that’ll help you understand how our language is affected by accents, regionalisms, levels of scholarity, slangs, and such.
Don’t feel bad if you can’t understand something. We can’t either, sometimes. I’ve watched O Auto da Compadecida maybe 6 times until I could comprehend everything. That happens mostly because I’m from Rio and the story takes place in Paraíba(very far from here). Also because of income differences, lifestyle differences, etc.
Click on the titles to watch it. I’ll link it with english subtitles whenever possible. They might not be in HD, but it’s not hard to find a version in better quality.
This list will have tagged such as:
S - slang-heavy; R - heavy in regionalisms and idiomatic expressions; LS - low scholarity effects on the language; G - gringos(foreigners) speaking portuguese; OT - old-timey portuguese.
Brazil is very fortunate to be rich in works with such cultural representation like these, so, eventually, this list might get a part 2. My faves will be tagged with a *
Enjoy.

Subordinating Conjunctions in German
As part of 100 Days of Languages
Day 16: learn 1 grammatical concept. (I already knew how to use these, but now I have a better grasp of them)
Tumblr media
While writing sentences in German you can use a subordinating conjunction to join a main clause (Hauptsatz) with a subordinate clause (Nebensatz). When you use one, the word order of the sentence is changed sending the verb to the end of the sentence. There’s many subordinating conjunctions, I’ll go through some.
Als – when (past events)
Als sie in Italien war, hat sie viele Menschen getroffen.
When she was in Italy, she met many people.
Bevor – before
An wen denkst du, bevor du einschlÀfst?
Who do you think about before going to bed?
Dass – that
Ich denke, dass wir uns nicht treffen sollen.
I think we shouldn’t see each other.
Damit – so that
Sie hat Medizin in der UniversitĂ€t studiert, damit sie eine Ärztin werden kann.
She studied medicine in the university so that she could become a doctor.
Nachdem – after
Nachdem ich nach Deutschland gereist bin, esse ich mehr Brot.
After I travelled to Germany, I eat more bread.
Ob – if
Sie hat mich gefragt, ob du zurĂŒck nach Hause kommst.
She asked me if you are coming back home.
Obwohl – although/even though
Er isst NĂŒsse, obwohl er allergisch ist.
He eats nuts even though he is allergic.
Seit – since
Sara wohnt in Schleiz, seit sie geboren ist.
Sara lives in Schleiz since she was born.
Sobald – as soon as
Er wird Japanisch lernen, sobald er fertig mit Französisch ist.
He will learn Japanese, as soon as he is done with French.
Soviel – as much as/for all
Soviel sie weist, Pamela mag auch MĂ€dchen.
For all she knows, Lara also likes girls.
Soweit – as far as
Soweit ich mich erinnern kann, dieser Film ist ĂŒber Vampire.
As far as I can remember, this film is about vampires.
Sowie – as soon as
Sie wird ihr Buch lesen, sowie sie mit Hausaufgaben fertig ist.
She will read her book, as soon as she is done with homework.
WĂ€hrend – during/while
WÀhrend wir ins Kino gehen, könnten wir auch etwas essen.
While we go to the cinema, we could also eat something.
Weil – because
Ich lerne Deutsch, weil es sehr schön ist.
I learn German because it is really beautiful.
Wie – how
Wir haben keine Idee, wie die Lampe kaputt gegangen ist.
We have no idea how the lamp broke.
Wo – where
Daniel weiß nicht, wo sein Zwilling ist.
Daniel doesn’t know where his twin is.

Using the word: embora
In all my years of language learning no word has ever confused me more than ‘embora’ so in case anyone out there is having the same problem that i had i decided to make this post! Ok so embora basically has 2 meanings: 1.Even though/ but 2. To go/leave The first meaning is easy to understand there’s not much to say about it so I’ll just give a few examples:
Eu gosto de comer carne embora não coma muita (I like eating meat even though I don’t eat much)
Eu preciso de fazer isso embora nao vou a face-lo (I need to do that but I’m not going to)
it’ can be interchangeable with ‘mesmo’ and ‘ainda’
NOW the second meaning is what I found so confusing and I don’t even know why, because it’s pretty simple:
preciso ir embora
vamos embora
i thought embora meant to leave and yes, it does mean to leave BUT it involves the action of leaving a place to go somewhere else or do something else, it refers to stopping what you are doing and replace it with something else.
So that’s it! now vai embora!

Free Portuguese Resources
Beginner Resources for European Portuguese
Memrise I’m sure you all know about Memrise, here you can find loads of different Brazilian or European Portuguese courses, not only for beginners but intermediate and advanced learners too.
RTP Zigzag RTP is Portugal’s public broadcasting network, and Zigzag is its section devoted to kids’ videos. Most are educational, covering geography, history, and general fun facts. Each video is only a few minutes long, fun and educational way to learn.
Learn Portuguese with Rafa This site is incredible, it’s targeted at learners of European Portuguese but can be of use to Brazilian Portuguese learners. It has everything from grammar lessons to vocab traditional Portuguese recipes.
Beginner Resources for Brazilian Portuguese
Duolingo I’m sure you don’t need an introduction to Duo but it’s great for beginners, free and the Portuguese course just so happens to be Brazilian Portuguese. PSA: if you click on the ‘Labs’ link in the header of the desktop site, you can find fun interactive short stories.
Semantica Unfortunately the entire course isn’t free but it has a whole bunch of article ranging from grammar to vocabulary for all level learners. It’s pretty fantastic.
Intermediate + Advanced Podcasts, Videos & More
Intermediate European Portuguese
Practice Portuguese This site has free podcasts and videos based on real life situations, it’s great as listening comprehension practise. The speaker’s voice is slow and clear, so it is perfect for listeners who are still getting used to spoken Portuguese.
PortuguĂȘses no Mundo I don’t know about you but I love podcasts about travel! This free podcast is about world travel and it is useful for Portuguese learners because each episode follows the same structure. In each episode, the host interviews a Portuguese person who’s living in another country, the host asks the same questions to each guest (“Why did you move to that country?”, “What surprised you the most about living there?”, “What do you miss most about Portugal?”, etc.).
Visiokids: CiĂȘncia para Crianças For science lovers, who aren’t quite ready to learn about astrophysics in Portuguese, this site contains science videos for kids! Super educational, why not learn science whilst practising your listening skills?
CamĂ”es Instituto da Cooperação e da Lingua Portugal Under “A Ler” (“reading”) there’s an assortment of books including story books (with accompanying audio!), mini biographies (with accompanying quizzes!) and a reference guide for everyday situations. Check out “A Falar” (“speaking”) for videos about spoken Portuguese, “A Ouvir” (“listening”) for a variety of audio exercises, and “A Brincar” (“playing”) for some games.
 Intermediate Brazilian Portuguese
NHK World Radio Japão This is great for intermediate and advanced speakers you can accustom yourself to listening to native speakers who are talking clearly at full speed. HK World News broadcasts a daily news program from Tokyo in dozens of languages, including Brazilian Portuguese.
Cinem(ação) This is a popular film-related podcasts in Brazil. It airs weekly, the hosts chat about one or more films released that week. Yu can also use this as a source of film recommendations.
Advanced European Portuguese
Conta-me Tudo (Tell Me Everything) Each episode of these podcasts features a different speaker telling his or her fascinating tale to an audience. Topics are varied and include narrow escapes from death, odd ways to begin a career, and a terrible idea for a birthday present. The speakers all speak quickly, so the stories are perfect for advanced learners.
Advanced Brazilian Portuguese
CBTV Canal Brasil for iOS, Android and Roku is a completely free live TV channel, unfortunately it’s only available in the United States. It broadcasts from Florida and includes news, sports, history, health, and even pets! Because it’s intended for native Brasileiros, the content is pretty advanced.

GERMAN YOUTUBERS MEGAPOST
Tumblr media
Hey German Study Buddies,
I think watching German youtube for the past year or so has allowed my German to improve so much. Adopting the German colloquialisms and listening to the fluency and grammar structures in the videos has really helped me so so much! For anybody learning a language: youtube is the best!
Not only is it fun to watch the many funny videos or hauls (yes
I have obsession with clothing hauls), but also you can learn so much by just continually listening to the German. Anyway, it took me a while to find these German youtubers so I thought I would share them in one big master post here:
PS: if you know any other good German youtubers let me know and I’ll add to the list! :) PPS: I put a little heart next to my favourite ones x
