“You’re not like the other girls!”
Yes. I am.
I am like other girls
Who walk to their cars at night
With keys tucked between fingers
As a makeshift self defense.
I am like other girls
Who have been conditioned to eat
Every compliment given out
Because if not, they’ll be starved of them
And fed degradation instead
I am like other girls
Who bite their tongues so often
That they forget the have a voice
In the first place
I am like other girls
Who are taught to
Tear down other girls to build themselves up
I am like other girls
Who have been sexualized
Since the age of ten
Simply because they have began to bud breast
And decide to wear shorts in the summer
I am like other girls
Who are told that their
Ethnicity isn’t attractive
And their skin tone isn’t desirable
I am like other girls
Who have had grown men
Follow them in stores
and yell from car windows
in hopes of getting in contact with them
I am like other girls
Who learned that
The more ribs you could count,
The more you’d be liked
I am like other girls
Who figured out
“Boys will be boys”
Really mean
“Boys will never be held accountable for their actions”
I am like other girls
Who were told that
Abuse and harassment signify
Attraction and that it should be flattering
I am like other girls
Who have been taught
No matter how much their body is theirs,
It never truly is...
