So, I know that in 50+ years everything has been said about Kirk/Spock, but I want to talk about this anyway. :D
In one of the first episodes, specifically "What are little girls made of?", we get a pretty interesting scene:
In context, Christine is hearing her fianc茅's voice after 5 years, but because of his unusual request, Spock wonders if it's actually him talking. Christine is sure that it's him, and she probably thinks that anyone who's been in a close romantic relationship would get it. Which is why she teases the First Officer: "Have you ever been engaged, Mr. Spock?"
After her question, the camera switches to Kirk (okay, I could actually write another essay about why the hell do they show Kirk right after Christine asked Spock if he's ever been engaged???, but whether you believe it or not, this isn't what I want to focus on here :D), then we finally see Spock.
NOW, let's see what happens. First of all, Spock doesn't answer the question. Why? We might never know what Star Trek writers were thinking when they wrote that episode, because it was very early in the series. If I had to guess, I'd say nobody had planned Amok Time when the first part of season 1 was shot, but it's also possible that they were already considering giving Spock a Vulcan fianc茅e/wife. Either way, since we can't prove anything about the creators' intent, we can at least talk about what is actually canon in the series.
Spock's answer to Christine's question "Have you ever been engaged, Mr. Spock?" would be "Yes". Spock is currently engaged to T'Pring, he's been engaged since he was a child. Even if we don't know anything about it when we watch season 1 for the first time, "Yes" is the canon answer, the only 100% official one.
So, let's think about it again: Christine asks Spock a private question about his romantic life, and Spock doesn't answer. Well, to be precise, this is what he does:
Yeah, it's just a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, sure, but you can see that he lifts his right eyebrow. That's his way to answer. Now, I'm sure a lot of you are starting to suspect what I'm getting at, but let me sum it up first:
Someone asks Spock a personal question about his romantic life. ("Have you ever been engaged, Mr. Spock?")
Spock raises his right eyebrow and doesn't answer.
The 100% canon answer to that question is that he is indeed involved in that kind of matters. ("Yes, I am currently engaged.")
Why doesn't Spock say anything? Well, we know that Vulcans don't like lying, but they can refuse to answer. So we can deduce that Spock doesn't want to reply to that kind of question, especially when the truth isn't "no, I've never had a mate", but something that would make others too curious. Spock is a private person, he doesn't like the way humans make everything about feelings and emotions. Maybe it wouldn't be a problem for him to deny everything about his potential romantic/sexual relationships, if it was the truth.
Anyway, speculations aside, the most important thing is that the episode "What are little girls made of?" sets a precedent:
- Someone asks Spock a personal question about his romantic life.
- Spock raises his right eyebrow and doesn't answer.
- The answer is YES.
SO, YOU KNOW...
- Someone asks Spock a personal question about his romantic life.
- Spock raises his right eyebrow and doesn't answer.
- The answer is YES.
YOU KNOW RIGHT?
- Someone asks Spock a personal question about his romantic life.
- Spock raises his right eyebrow and doesn't answer.
- The answer is YES.
From "Star Trek The Motion Picture" novelization, Roddenberry's footnote:
Someone asks Spock a personal question about his romantic life. ("Did you and Admiral Kirk become lovers, Mr. Spock?")
Spock raises his right eyebrow and doesn't answer.
I find pretty interesting that in an episode where they test the efficiency of a computer that could potentially take Kirk's place on the Enterprise, Bones says this:
Of course, in The Ultimate Computer the M-5 is supposed to replace almost the entire crew as well, not just Kirk, but the focus of the episode is definitely on the captain. Kirk is concerned because he has a bad feeling about the M-5 (and he's right) and he wonders if he's afraid of losing his job.
But Bones is NOT subtle here about Spock: I mean, "the love light in his eyes", "the right computer finally came along"... He's definitely joking about the M-5 being Spock's love interest. Did I already say that the computer is supposed to replace Kirk, and it's Kirk's rival in the episode? Yeah.
And then Spock surprises everyone:
I saw the clip of this scene multiple times, but only after rewatching this episode I realized that in context everyone on the bridge is probably looking at them and listening to them, especially the scientist who created the computer, because he has just asked Kirk a question (that Kirk has ignored to go talk to Spock instead). So Spock is literally confessing all of this to Kirk in front of his colleagues and the scientist he admires... And I thought Vulcans weren't open about their feelings. :D
Bonus from the end of the episode: Spock and Bones bickering, Kirk staring at Spock like that. All back to normal, nothing new to see.
[s2 e24 - The Ultimate Computer]
Sometimes Star Trek TOS is just a Klingon woman next to a Klingon man, and the man saying: "My wife Mara, and my science officer". And then the camera shows Kirk and Spock next to each other. In silence, just staring at the ship commander/science officer married couple in front of them. We're probably supposed to think about something, but the show goes on. No explanation.
And Kirk, Spock, Mccoy, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, Christine, Surak, Lincoln (everyone) will be dissapointed at me
BUTT
It was so dusty, meaning no one ever touched the damn thing
And I called it Library of Freedom because it is an open cabinet, stood at our Faculty Floor, and the contents are old books for students to read whenever they want
Without having to "check in" or "check out" the book
So I was able to stole it pretty much super easy, and no one would ever notice because no one in here cares about this book
And I can give it all the love that I have
I might going to pay for this action one day
Butt
I won't regret this!
(Confessing my sin to the internet, such an idiot)
It's my birthday today, what a banner day all around!
My partner: What do you want to watch tonight for your birthday?
Me: Take a wild guess.
My partner: Amok Time
Me: You'll be kept on.
Because Amok Time came out a day after my birthday, it's my tradition to watch it every birthday and do my shindig with friends on the weekend.
It is tradition!
(Bonus: My students pooled their money to get me gifts, snacks, and my lunch today. 馃槶鉂わ笍 Told them not to get me a thing, they insisted. Also nearly got hugged to death LOL!
Had to go in the bathroom and cry because they are all asylum seeking refugees who come here with next to nothing, and yet they are all so kind a giving. They didn't have to do that! My heart is exploding right now. Best day everrrrr-)
