I wanted to share this blog post from Jess Thom (aka Touretteshero) on the topic of the current conversation around changing the name of Tourette Syndrome. It summed up my thoughts on the situation perfectly.

people are 'fine' with people with tic disorders until we're not entertaining enough.

until we're not 'cute' or 'interesting' enough of a freak for them.

and then they kick us to the curb when they've had their fucking fill. and I'm so damn tired of it

i NEED you to remember this: you are allowed to be angry at your doctors. you are allowed to be furious. you are allowed to be mad at your nurses and technicians and neurologists and psychiatrists and medical assistants. they are not god. they are human beings and they work in a system that wears them raw, and that is unfair, but it isn't an excuse to treat you badly. i'm not necessarily saying you should throw a brick through the window of their car, but you can, should, must be angry with them for ignoring you, demeaning you, dehumanizing you, dismissing you, acting like you're lying, talking only about your weight, failing to acknowledge you past your symptoms, etc etc etc. you are an equal to your doctor. you are a human being and so are they. do not treat them as beyond reproach. you are allowed to be angry at your doctors.

For this autism awareness/acceptance month, let’s listen and support nonspeaking, nonverbal, and mute autistic people.

Let’s listen to them, interact with them, and support them. Let’s educate others on their terms that verbal people shouldn’t be using. Let’s uplift their voices. Let’s celebrate and center them. Let’s talk about those who can’t communicate via AAC and alternative communication. Let’s talk about the more marginalized nonspeaking/nonverbal/mute autistic people. The POC nonspeaking/nonverbal/mute people. The trans nonspeaking/nonverbal/mute people. The queer nonspeaking/nonverbal/mute people. The high support needs nonspeaking/nonverbal/mute people.

Let’s center them, talk about them, and celebrate their achievements, accomplishments, and just for being here and being them.

I wish people liked contemporary dance more! i think its beautiful how u can communicate a sensation, a feeling, an emotion only through movements, can we romanticize it!!?? please i need more people to talk about it
