Dahlia Tuber Giveaway
All week long our team has been busy shipping out thousands of signed copies of Discovering Dahlias from the Floret Shop to flower lovers all over the world!
To celebrate the launch of the book, we are hosting a really fun contest to win one of fifteen deluxe dahlia tuber collections. Each collection features my favorite varieties for cutting, including some very rare, hard-to-find treasures.
Inside the box of specialty tubers, I will also be tucking a signed copy of the book, a jar of magical dahlia honey from our rainbow field, a packet of dahlia seeds collected from my personal breeding patch, and a set of printed planning cards to help you plan your perfect dahlia garden.
Tumblr media
Here’s how to play along:
1. When your book arrives, take a picture or film a short video — the more creative you get, the better. Bonus points if you or someone you love is in it!
2. Post your photo or video on Instagram, tag me @floretflower, and use the hashtag #discoveringdahlias. Photos or videos must be posted in your main feed, not stories, to be eligible, since stories disappear within 24 hours and they’re not searchable.
**Separately, I’d love it if you share about the book in your Instagram stories — if you do, be sure to tag me @floretflower so that I can see them!**
3. On March 30 I’ll be announcing the 15 lucky winners and sharing your posts here on the blog.
The giveaway is open to anyone who bought the book, no matter where you purchased your copy.
If you don’t have an Instagram account, no worries! We have another great giveaway happening over on this blog post.
Tumblr media
International readers:
Unfortunately we cannot send dahlia tubers outside of the United States because of export restrictions — I so wish we could!
However, if you live outside the United States, we still want you to play along. If your post is chosen, we will send you an amazing dahlia-themed goody box instead.
I can’t wait to see what you come up with! Good luck!

Discovering Dried Flowers
Tumblr media
Only in recent years have I become a fan of dried flowers. I always used to turn up my nose at them because they reminded me of tacky, dated flower books from the late ‘80s.
Now I can’t believe it took me so long to discover their benefits. Drying flowers means you can preserve the abundance in your garden to be enjoyed later when nothing is blooming. Back when we were finishing the winter chapter of A Year in Flowers, I realized how useful and versatile dried flowers really are.
If you use the right method, you can dry just about anything, and there are dozens of books on the subject lining the shelves of used bookstores and thrift stores. A couple of years ago I discovered a dated but incredibly helpful book, Flowers: Growing-Drying-Preserving, by Alan Cormack and David Carter, that goes into great detail on all the different varieties that you can dry, plus step-by-step instructions for how to do it, whether you’re air drying or using silica gel.
Tumblr media
There are so many ways to use dried flowers, seedpods, and grasses: in late autumn arrangements, adorning fresh holiday wreaths, or even mixed with fresh blooms. I thought it would be helpful to share some of the varieties that are the easiest to grow and most popular for drying.
Strawflowers (pictured above) is a traditional standby, but the gorgeous new colours and varieties make them seem entirely different from those ’80s flowers, and they actually look incredible when mixed with fresh blooms.
Tumblr media
Start seed indoors in trays 6 weeks before your last frost. Seed requires light to germinate so do not cover. Bottom-water until seedlings emerge, and transplant out after all danger of frost has passed. For drying, you can cut them at the desired stage of openness, and they’ll hold in that stage.
Statice, another standby, is one of the best flowers for drying and also wonderful when used fresh. Easy to grow and great for beginners, this versatile plant’s papery flowers bloom all summer long.
Tumblr media
Start seeds indoors 6 weeks before the last frost; transplant out when all danger of frost has passed. Harvest when all flowers on a stem have appeared. If picked too soon, stems will wilt. Fresh flowers have a 7- to 10-day vase life.
Larkspur (second from right, above) is one of the easiest cut flowers to grow—cold-titrant and early to bloom, it adds tall, colourful spikes to spring gardens.
Tumblr media
Direct seed in late fall or early spring or start seed indoors in trays 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost, and plant out while the weather is still cool. Plants do best when sown directly in the garden. Larkspur can be planted in fall in even the coldest corners of the world. Speed up germination by chilling seed in a refrigerator or freezer for a week before sowing.
To dry, let all but the top three to four blooms open, then pick and hang upside down in a warm, dry place out of bright light for 2 weeks.
Grown for their unique textural blooms, celosias are vigorous and free-flowering. These easy-to-grow flowers come in a wide variety of shapes, colours, and forms, ranging from a crested cockscomb to spikey, plumed forms that are great accents for bouquets.
Tumblr media
Flower heads get bigger over time, so pick when they are the size that you want, but before they go to seed. Celosias often last 2 weeks as fresh flowers. To dry them, hang freshly cut stems upside down in a warm dark place for 2 to 3 weeks or until they are firm to the touch.
Globe Amaranth has adorable, button-like blooms that look great in bouquets. This late summer darling thrives in the heat and is hard-working in both the garden and in the vase.
Tumblr media
Start seed indoors in trays 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost; transplant out after all danger of frost has passed. Freshly harvested flowers can last up to 2 weeks in the vase, and dried flowers look nearly the same as fresh ones.
Eucalyptus is a staple, much in demand by florists and for weddings. Its blue-green and silvery hues set off both cool and warm floral palettes, and everyone loves its distinctive methol fragrance. Our favourite is ‘Round-Leaved Mallee’, pictured above.

Paying it forward
When our children were very young, I started growing flowers. Elora is in her third year of college, while Jasper just graduated from high school. I have been growing flowers for a long time.
Chris was working as a mechanic down in Seattle when the kids were little, and he commuted to work every day. During the week, he was rarely home and I was alone with my two young children, so I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to be when I grew up.
Tumblr media
During those early years, I experimented with many small business ideas to see what would work, including planting an heirloom cider orchard (I didn't realize it would take at least five years before I could harvest anything).my first viable harvest). I raised more than a hundred chickens in our backyard for a rainbow egg business, but the birds kept escaping from their coop, and I would get angry calls from our neighbors daily.
Even though I tried growing miniature vegetables for local customers, I quickly discovered that it takes a lot of zucchinis to make $5. I tried so many different ideas, but none of them worked.
In the process, I added flowers to my garden and began selling the extra blooms.sta Flowers stirred such deep emotion unlike any other thing I made or grew.pow When I delivered my homegrown blooms, complete strangers would open up and share their most beautiful stories with me. most beautiful stories with me.
Tumblr media
Every recipient could recall a flower memory as if it were yesterday. After I started sharing flowers that I had grown myself, I felt like I had finally found my calling.
As a result, every waking minute was devoted to the garden. I was obsessed with it. However, I knew very little about flower farming.
I spent nearly every evening email conversations with flower growers across the country, and spending my days reading every gardening book my library could order and trying out all the things I had learned in the books.to practice all the things I had read about in my garden.
Tumblr media
During that time, social media wasn't even a thing, and there was very little information available on the topic ormIn addition to Lynn Byczynski's The Flower Farmer, Sarah Raven's The Cutting Garden, and Martha Stewart's Gardening: Month by Month, I just made it up as I went along.st made it up as I went along.
Even though I believe in being self-taught, building a business from scratch with so little to go on and no community was incredibly lonely and challenging for me. Since I was learning everything as I went along, I made so many painful and costly mistakes.
When IIt still amazes me that I didn't give up in those early days. think back to those early days I am still amazed that I didn’t throw in the towel. I failed way more than I succeeded and for the first few years, I really thought about quitting every single day.
Each failure was a sign that I was on the wrong path, and nothing came easy. Whenever I questioned what I was doing and questioned my faith, Chris always said, "The flowers are different.". So I would get back up, dust myself off, and try again.
After struggling my way through the first few years, I managed to grow a small business in our backyard and eventually start making a little profi tittle business in our backyard and eventually start making a small profit. Every penny that I made with my flowers went into paying off a mountain of debt that we incurred some years earlier.
Due to the fact that we were so determined to get out of debt and clean up the mess that we had made, there was never any extra that I could invest in myself.
As I made thousands of mixed bouquets in our garage, I dreamed of the day when I could finally leave the farm and learn from my flower heroes. My heart would ache every time one of them announced an upcoming class or workshop.class or workshop my heart would ache.
Although I was working hard and making good progress on paying down our debt as well as getting better at growing and arranging flowers, I didn't feel like I was getting any closer to realizing the big dreams I had for myself.
Tumblr media
During that time I had started writing articles about my flower growing journey and had the opportunity to interview Ariella Chezar, I started writing articles about my flower growing journey and had the opportunity to interview Ariella Chezar, the godmother of seasonal floral design, and we became penpals.the godmother of seasonal floral design, and we became penpals. She knew how badly I wanted to attend one of her workshops but I couldn’t ever come close to affording it.
I’ll never forget the day that I received her email saying if I could get myself to her next workshop that I could attend for free. Up until that point my flower journey had been so incredibly difficult and nothing came easy. I had gotten so worn down by the grind that I was on the verge of quitting altogether.
So when I got that offer, everything I believed to be true was challenged in the best possible way. At that moment, I decided that if I ever had anything of value to share with someone else who needed a leg up that I would pay it forward as many times as I possibly could.
The workshop was beyond anything I could have possibly imagined and the experience completely altered the course of my life. I came back to the farm after that blissful week in California changed.
Having someone who I admired so deeply believe in me helped me believe in myself. That act of generosity felt like getting permission to finally go after all of the dreams that I had put on hold for so long.
I quickly got to work overhauling my little flower business and from there things really took off. Within a few short years, I had the opportunity to write my first book and eventually welcome more than 500 budding and established growers and designers to learn with us on our tiny 2-acre farm.
Tumblr media
Over the next few years, our small family operation grew and we started a seed company, built an amazing little team, were fortunate enough to find our forever farm, wrote two more books, and transitioned our on-farm workshops online.
I can so easily trace each one of these blessings back to the moment I received that life-changing email. You never know just how much sharing with another person can completely change their life.
I have tried my best to infuse Ariella’s generous legacy into everything we do and our scholarship program is my very favorite way of paying it forward.
Next Tuesday, September 14, we will be opening up applications for our scholarship program. This is our 9th anniversary of both teaching the Floret workshop and offering scholarships.
I am so excited that we will be awarding 12 seats, our most ever. Each recipient will receive full tuition to the 2022 Floret Online Workshop, plus a box of goodies from the farm.
Tumblr media
If you’ve been dreaming of filling your life with more flowers, but the Floret workshop is out of reach, I highly encourage you to take the time and apply for one of our scholarships.

Review Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition
Working closely with the world’s most famous spy in cinematic history, currently portrayed by Daniel Craig, Omega has created a rather unique Seamaster Diver 300M. The new 007 Edition – which is non-limited by the way – looks and feels completely different from the regular Seamaster Professional series. And that is a good thing because a man of his stature deserves something special right? So without further ado, let us take you through all the details of the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition.
📷
I vividly remember growing up with the James Bond movie franchise. Being a “kid of the eighties” meant that many films came before I was born, and many have come since, but I’ve watched them all several times over. One thing that stands out most to me, besides the obvious taglines, is the gadgets (and the cars of course). In almost every movie, the Q-branch of MI6 plays a major role in James Bond’s missions, supplying him with the necessary state of the art equipment, often disguised as everyday objects. And one of those objects is usually a watch, and that’s where we come in.
📷
Omega has had an extensive history with the James Bond franchise, although it is not the only watchmaking company that has been involved. The connection between Omega and the movies started back in 1995, with the introduction of the Omega Seamaster 300M Quartz Professional, strapped to the wrist of then-Bond actor Pierce Brosnan in GoldenEye. The following three movies all featured similar Omega Seamaster 300M models only this time using mechanical movements.
📷
When Daniel Craig took up the humongous task of portraying James Bond, Omega stayed on as a partner to the franchise. In Casino Royale Bond had a Seamaster Diver 300M Co-Axial and a Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M at his disposal. The Planet Ocean 600M would stay on for Quantum of Solace, albeit in a smaller size. In Skyfall, the Planet Ocean 600m was joined by a Seamaster Aqua Terra 150m. A big change came in 2015 when Omega decided to create a dedicated piece for Mr. Bond to be used in Spectre, the Seamaster 300 Master Chronometer Spectre Edition.
📷
📷
📷
The full rundown of the 20 years of partnership between the franchise and Omega, including the Spectre movie, can be found here. There’s also this retrospective focusing specifically on the Omega Seamasters used in James Bond movies. The final movie in the long-lasting saga is No Time To Die, which has been postponed several times due to Covid-19 but is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on the 30th of September.
📷Daniel Craig starring as James Bond in No Time To Die, premiering in cinemas on the 30th of September.
Now, we’ve featured this particular watch before but since the 25th James Bond movie is close upon release, we thought we’d revisit it again and provide another detailed review. If we take a close look at the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition, a few things stand out. First off is the choice of materials. Omega has decided to use unpolished, untreated Grade 2 Titanium for a utilitarian, military-type look.
While certainly not the first Seamaster 300M to feature the lightweight, anti-corrosive material, seeing it in its natural state is quite impressive. Of course, being a Seamaster means lyre lugs, a helium escape valve, and a screw-down crown nestled in between crown guards. Compared to other Seamaster Diver 300M models, it is a lot less shiny. And to an extent that also implies for the bezel and dial.
📷The 007 edition next to a regular Seamaster Diver 300M
Speaking of which, the dial and bezel feature a deep brown base that almost looks black. Free of the decorative waves engraved on the dial, the 007 Edition sticks to its utilitarian theme throughout. The hour markers, as well as the markings on the aluminum bezel insert and the hour hands, are done in a “Tropical” style.
This means the typically styled hands are done in a matte finish with crème/beige luminous material. The lume shines in different colours in darker circumstances. This will undoubtedly be quite useful on an actual dive, but given that most of these watches will endure the odd bit of desk-diving only, it feels somewhat messy and unnecessary.
📷
The same “Tropical” style is applied to the graduations on the bezel, and subsequently the hour markers. The sweeping lollipop seconds hand has a red tip, for contrast. A nice touch is that Omega kept the dial free of any intrusive 007 brandings, something the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M – The James Bond L.E. Set introduced in 2019 received quite a bit of feedback for. Instead, the famous double-O-seven and Walther PPK logo subtly adorns the closed case back only.
📷
Mr. Bond himself, or anyone who fancies owning this particular watch, can rely on Omega’s in-house Calibre 8806 movement. Naturally, this comes with Master Chronometer certifications issued by METAS. Although obscured from view, this automatic movement is finished very nicely, similar to what we find in the recent Black Black edition of the Seamaster 300m for instance. The movement is regulated with the co-axial escapement and free-sprung balance wheel with silicon balance spring. It uses a single barrel, capable of storing up to 55 hours of power. The case back is locked in place with the NAIAD locking system and is finished with a navigational arrow and the reference number.
📷
The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition comes on either a titanium mesh bracelet or a Bond-style NATO strap with titanium hardware. The latter has alternating black, beige and grey stripes. There’s one thing on the bracelet we’d like to address though and that is however tied in it may look, it feels a little bit like an aftermarket alternative. It’s almost like it’s not designed to go with it initially, despite it being very comfortable on the wrist.
📷
Regardless of that little factor, the 007 Edition is a very impressive watch. Everything feels very solid and robust, just as we expect from a brand like an Omega. It looks rather stealthy and tool-ish, is a more than capable dive watch and for once is not a limited edition likely to be sold out within minutes.

How The Left Wrist Became The Right Wrist For Watches
Tumblr media
In European newspapers, much has been written about strap watches in military equipment. This has garnered a lot of attention since modern warfare has demonstrated the necessity of knowing the time". There is an explanation of how the wristwatch evolved quickly, and the story concludes, "Until recently, watch bracelets were more or less thought of as a joke.". Vaudeville actors and moving-picture actors have used it as a 'silly-ass fad'.
But now, since preparedness has become the watchword and watches have become an essential part of soldiers' equipment, the status of the wristwatch is changing. Now they are willing to concede the value of a bracelet watch for general outdoor activities, but they are not yet at the point where they can consistently adapt it for all occasions after poking fun.
What happened next? Next, you know what happened. Pocket watches went into oblivion, except as an object of fascination for a few, and wristwatches became the ubiquitous and universal tool for timekeeping on the go. Most of the time, it was worn on the left wrist.
At least one reason for the popularity of left wrist watches is pretty simple: handedness and handwriting.
It was not uncommon, once upon a time, that left-handed students would be forced to write with the right hand once they started school (the Soviet school system, for instance, enforced this uniformly). There are many reasons for this, including cultural bias against lefties and the fact that many tools and appliances are designed based on the assumption that the right hand is the right hand. One example is a mechanical can-opener.
The practical reason for requiring right-handedness has to do with writing.
The dip pen and fountain pen, which were the standard for correspondence for much of the 20th century, use slow-drying liquid ink that will smear if your pen is in your left hand and you're writing left to right. It wasn't until Lazlo Biro invented the ball-point pen, which was popularized by the success of the Reynolds ball-point pen, that this problem became non-existent.
The Reynolds became available at Gimbels in New York in the winter of 1945 (in the film The Godfather, Michael Corleone's girlfriend Kay Adams is shown buying one for Tom Hagen in that year). It used a dry, oil-based ink that was far less likely to smear, and so ball-point pens have since existed.
Montblanc fountain pen, center and upper right; Montblanc ballpoint pen, lower left. Hamburg, Montblanc House.
Right-wingers, however, were not affected by this. If you write with your right hand, your left wrist is the natural place to keep your watch out of harm's way.
Despite the fact that 90% of the general population uses their right hand more often than their left, even when the fountain pen gave way to the ballpoint, it still made more sense for righties to wear left-handed watches.
(There were still right-handed watch wearers, for example; the Command Module pilot for Apollo 11 wore his watch on his right wrist).
Even today, wearing a watch on the left wrist is not universal, and a totally informal, statistically insignificant survey of my colleagues at HODINKEE provided some interesting results.
My wife has always worn her ring on her right hand, not left-handed. My father wears his on the right but is left-handed."
My watch is worn on my right wrist for two reasons: first, I am left-handed so I cannot drag it across desks as I write or risk hitting it. Second, it keeps the crown up-arm so there is less exposure to water when I wash my hands."
As a left-handed person, I wear my watch on my left because I have been too conformed to societal norms.
My dad wore his on his left wrist when I was a kid, so I copied him. Wearing it on my right wrist feels wrong."
"I write left-handed but still wear left because I hardly write anymore!"
In addition, many of my classmates in watchmaking school were left-handed, and we all wore our watches on the right wrist."
The trend of writing by hand has largely been replaced by typing (mostly with your thumbs), and this makes me wonder if people will increasingly wear watches on the right wrist, for reasons of aesthetics and comfort. Writing by hand takes away much of the incentive to wear a watch, at least for shiftless knowledge-workers who don't actually produce anything. (My sons love to tell me I "type for a living.".)
An extreme meta move would be to wear a watch with the crown on the left, designed to be worn on the right wrist, on the left wrist - an exercise in deliberate perversity that seems perfectly attuned to these increasingly surreal times.

Jewelry for a super blue moon
Tumblr media
shop with us
Where la luna is concerned, 2021 is off to an auspicious start with a blue moon, a super moon and a lunar eclipse – all in its first month. We ushered in the year with a full moon on New Years Day, which means most of us will see a blue moon as well – a second full moon in the same month – on January 31.
Both full moons are supermoons – the phenomenon that occurs when the moon orbits closest to Earth so appears bigger and brighter – and the one at month’s end will be a lunar eclipse. Any one of those things is rare but to have them all in one month – and the first month of this year…. That is significant, and we should be properly adorned, don’t you think?
So I’ve pulled together some of the coolest moon jewels I could find. I say we keep them on all year, as a badge of sorts.
This past year was rough for a lot of people. Many of us witnessed what we see as an extreme abuse of power. Yet it was also a year many women, after years of living in quiet shame, began to reclaim their own power. Big surprise: the world listened. As Oprah said at the Golden Globes Sunday night: “A new day is on the horizon.”
I appreciated all the black gowns at the Globes. They made a perfect backdrop for emeralds and diamonds. But we can’t keep wearing black for solidarity; there’s too much of it out there already. I’d love to see jewelry serve that purpose. I say we adopt the moon as a symbol of empowerment.
Maybe because women’s bodies follow a monthly cycle, the moon has long been associated with feminine power – both good (ancient goddesses) and evil (witchcraft). I’ve focused on moon-themed jewels here before but this time I dug up a wider array, to show just how many amazing moon jewels are out there.

10 Jewelry Trends You Should Try
Tumblr media
As trends come and go, you don't want to buy into fast-fleeting fashions only to have your investment quickly become out-of-style. Luckily, I have compiled a list of ten current jewelry trends that I think are safe bets to try and will remain popular for a long time. Nonetheless, I encourage you to put your own spin on them and find the more "classic" end of these.
Here are some of the hottest trends currently happening in jewelry:
1 — pieces that attach & detach easily (like charms and clips)
All of these things, from charms you can wear on your hoop earrings to clips for necklaces to carry a collection of charms, are very popular right now. Several jewelry designers have created "hinges" that can attach and detach to all types of chains, so that any jewelry collector can create their own unique look.
2 — YELLOW GOLD
In terms of metals, yellow gold still reigns supreme. Diamonds are probably the only instance in which white metal is preferred.
3 — Pearls
With its surge in popularity, this elusive organic gem truly surprised me. This trend has exploded this past year, from baroque pearl dangle earrings to unique pearl drop pendants. It seemed to be on its way out The last time Ariana Grande got engaged was with a pearl and diamond ring.
4 — Layers of necklaces
You might not be surprised if you frequent Instagram's jewelry community. Everyone is obsessed with creating a "neck mess" and adding unique charms and chains to their own. Too much clothing is never a problem.
5 — mixing textures, not metals
Mixing and matching are still fashionable but in a more contrasting way. In the world of jewelry, mixing metal textures and styles is equivalent to mixing patterns in fashion, and it is a relatively new trend. Different finishes are being used by designers to elevate a polished piece of jewelry.
6 — “curated” ears, dainty studs and multi-pierced look
Jewelry lovers who wish to style their ears with a unique earring combination are looking for something that fits their own ears based on their shape and number of piercings. The popularity of multiple ear piercings has given mini stud earrings a chance to shine.
7 — paper clip chains
The paper clip chain is probably the hottest item of the holiday season. Named for its resemblance to a handy office supply, this type is thin and long of the chain is hardly a fly-by-night trend. It truly is an investment piece that is just as timeless as a pair of classic gold hoops.
8 — gypsy set rings, bold dome rings
If you follow engagement ring trends closely, you may have been surprised by the gypsy set style that flooded Instagram last year. Many people were drawn to the boldness of this style, which sets a gemstone in a dome-like setting. It's comfort that wins in this case, as it is in most of 2021!
9 — maximalism, bold, chunky
While we're on the subject of trends of the past, do you remember when dainty and delicate jewelry was all the rage a few years ago? Bold and chunky pieces are slowly taking over, with statement pieces becoming more and more popular. Maximalism makes my heart sing.
10 — one-of-a-kind gemstones, special cuts or carvings
My trip to Tucson last year taught me the importance of unique gems, especially those with unique cuts and carvings. There is a demand for something no one else has and sometimes the focus is put on the stones themselves.
