George Jackson Academy Career Day
(March 14, 2014) Career Day at the George Jackson Academy in New York City was, hands down, one of the best days ever. Two years ago I visited the school as an Author and read the children’s book Max the Shelter Dogto the then fourth graders. It was the most delightful reading I have ever done and still holds number one in my heart. The children, who are now in the sixth grade, were, and still…

What did you see when you first took a look at this picture? Did you know that this is actually a wild mushroom? When I first saw the picture I thought it was an animal of some sort wearing a black cape!

In even the grayest of places there is color.  Some may devote their whole lives in search of it and though it may be hidden, when found it is something so outstanding and beautiful that it makes the search worth while.

"Belief in oneself is one of the most important bricks in building any successful venture." - Lydia M. Child
Along with his favorite flavored dog bone and biscuits, Max's sweetest and most prized treat is success.  Success empowers us to do more than we thought  possible.  Success, although, does not always come so simply.  Sometimes, we have to try over and over again to be able to finally achieve that "Aha!" moment.  If you do not succeed the first time, try again! Failure allows us to grow from our mistakes and can push us to try with even more strength and optimism for the next time around.
Thomas Edison tried and failed nearly 2,000 times to develop the carbonized cotton-thread filament for the incandescent light bulb. And when asked about it he said, "I  didn't fail; I found 2,000 ways how not to make a light bulb."
Edison's perseverance and unwillingness to give up gave him the courage to successfully create the world's first electric light bulb.  Max, as well as Edison, experienced failure.  In Max's pursuits to try and find a new home he was left feeling uneasy with the constant passing of people not even glancing at his cage.  In the end, though, without once giving up on himself Max was adopted by the Nice Lady and achieved his greatest treat: success.
Max's never ending pursuit for success is one that is inspirational and can really give us hope to never give up on our dreams.  To see the rest of Max's incredible story visit our website at: http://www.maxtheshelterdog.com/
