I just want to gush about this kid's accomplishments
So I'm a TA for a kid with special needs in an after school program. Last year when I first started working with him he was labeled as nonverbal, he was only able to copy sounds and not actual words. But over time he's now saying short sentences he can write now he has less trouble with fine motor skills.
He's super smart. He was in a basic skills sped class last year. But he was able to read and was bored about learning numbers letters and colors so much so that he moved on to learn them in Spanish. And that was all when he was in kindergarten.
This year he's in a first Gen Ed class. He can now use scissors, he's able to tell me and show me what he's feeling.
But the other day I just realized how far he's gone. Last year a bunch of the teachers were pushing kids on the swings and doing under dogs with them (it's where the pusher swings them very high and then runs under the swing). And he wanted to do it but I thought he was too small.
So we made up this game where I would count down and then I'll run with the swing while pushing it and say Zoom!
Well he came up to me and said "can you 1 2 3 zoom?" And I realized he really learned a lot. He used to point to the swings and try to say Zoom.
This is why I want to be a sped teacher so I can look at kid's faces and see the happiness they have when someone finally understands them.
I'm not a perfect teacher but I'm still learning.
And everyone thinks I'm there to teach them how to conform to society. I'm not I'm there to help them cope with society.

An incomplete list of all my favorite things my kindergartener now 1st grader has said:
On the first day of school: You can't keep me here! I have a family that loves me.
When they're mad at someone: Goodbye forever!
Outside on field day: I'm burning up like a piece of bacon. I'm burning up like a hot dog.
Writing time: Mario and Luigi don't have to write their spelling words!
When I walk in to support the class: Oh it's you again. I thought I said goodbye forever to you.
Me: Stop licking the window.
Child: My mom said I could.
Me: I know for a fact she did not.
Child: My house is 10 miles that way if you want to ask her.
Me: put some hustle in your bustle
Child: what's a bustle?
Me: your bottom
Child: can't. I don't have one of those.
Me: See you later alligator
Child: How many times do I have to tell you I'm not an alligator! Can't you see? I'm a human.

Nobody really prepared for me for the amount of dick jokes I would have to endure when I started teaching middle school.
Nor was I prepared for the sheer amount of self-control I would need to not crack up.

These Gen Ed kids (general education) are out here acting fucking ridiculous and talking shit to my students like I'm not about to tell them to cut their shit out. There's a day and a half left and I'm not about to let my kids get bullied because they're different and the school year is almost over.
I will fight a 3rd grader

Okay so I get the "treat all kids them same"
But special needs kids have SPECIAL needs for a reason.
You should treat all kids like a human.
But anyways I found out a student that I taught has an IEP( a legal document about what special needs the child has and how to help them). No one told me he has an IEP or that he was on the spectrum.
I saw behaviors that kinda indicated that he was on the spectrum (not reacting when name is called, lots of spacing out, gets overwhelmed easily, needs extra direction etc). But it's not my place to say hey this kid has this. But I brought it up to my boss and she's like yeah he's on the spectrum.
I am furious they didn't tell me. I don't care if you don't want me to see his personal information I just want to know if he has things I should be doing. He would've had a better time if I KNEW why certain behaviors were happening.
I get the "treat everyone the same" for people with disabilities but it's bullshit. They are DISABLED which means they live DIFFERENTLY. They shouldn't have to conform to society, we should conform to them.
That's why I'm a SPED teacher, to help kids COPE and find ways that help them. I am not there to teach them HOW to be "normal"
Also please tell me if any of this is problematic POLITELY, I just want to know. This turned into a rant.

If you didn't know I work in education and I have several students who have medical conditions. Unfortunately, yesterday one of my students who has epilepsy, had a seizure on the playground. After her episode, I was sitting in the sick room monitoring her and our boomer AF security guard comes in and goes on this rant about big pharma could fix whatever wrong with her, they just want her family to keep buying the seizures meds because it profits them.
Like wtf? I hope his phone charger port is always fucked up and he has to get the cord just right to charge it.

Then there was the eggplant balloon

I trusted you, Bill Nye. I trusted that your videos would be safe and educational. Not a minefield of dick references that all my middle school students noticed. (Yes, he's vigorously rubbing the eggplant balloon)

What is audiology?
Audiology is the study of hearing and balance disorders. Audiologists are trained professionals who work with patients to evaluate, diagnose, and treat these disorders. They use a variety of tools and techniques to assess a patient's hearing and balance, including hearing tests, balance tests, and other diagnostic procedures.
Once a diagnosis has been made, audiologists work with patients to develop a treatment plan that may include hearing aids, cochlear implants, or other assistive devices. They also provide counseling and education to help patients and their families manage their hearing loss and maintain their quality of life.

I've written a lot about Ms. Pennington, the special ed teacher who saved my life when I was kid. I was struggling with a huge learning disability and she worked with me to help me master schoolwork --- but she also encouraged me to nurture my creativity and used creative pursuits to motivate me to try harder in school. I was so happy I got to hang out with her yesterday, and I'm so grateful that we're still friends. She and I are proof that a dedicated and supportive teacher can make a huge difference in someone's life. I got to tell her once again that I'm the person I am today thanks to her. <3
