I will add that, while yes it is a big issue you see often in shipping, I wasn't really thinking about ships while writing this post.
Bilbo, by being a hobbit, will always be treated like a clueless uwu baby, because people associate big aspects of his character with childlike innocence and wonder (seeing the world for the first place, being too small, having a pure heart). So this issue would still exist even if he wasn't a part of shipping culture
if bilbo wasn't a hobbit but instead a dwarf, man or elf, huge parts of his character would be taken way more seriously

Biggest tragedy in the tolkienverse is that when the dwarves were captured by the elves in Mirkwood, Thorin lost his sickass fur lined coat

It's finally time! I present to you my latest Bagginshield fic, created in collaboration with the @thorinsspringforge! I highly encourage everyone to check out the other amazing Thorin-centric works that just dropped from the collection! The link for that is HERE.
I want to thank @lordoftherazzles for making this amazing banner for me, as well as my lovely artist @rajirani, who chose my fic out of the lineup and who made the stunning art you will find both in the fic and the banner. You have no idea how excited I am to share this with you all, and I hope you enjoy! 🥰
The Burden Of Choice (Bagginshield, 56k, E)
Summary:
Thorin Oakenshield is the crown prince of one of the strongest kingdoms in Middle Earth, but in the last year, the kingdom has struggled to keep its place among the ruling powers of the land. Erebor was held under vicious siege for over a year as the dragon Smaug terrorised the land and all but wiped out the nearby human settlement of Dale. Eventually, the dwarves were victorious, but it was at the cost of many of their own, including Thorin’s father and youngest brother. They were left with a charred and decimated land. Since then, no crops could be persuaded to grow in the dragon's desolation. With tariffs from the elves climbing higher every year, King Thror is left with little choice but to secure an alliance with another race through the bonds of marriage. Thorin plans to make a run for it the night before he is forced to marry a foreign Lord. In his attempt, he runs right into Bilbo, doing the same thing.

it's my opinion that "all hobbits are kind/brave/generous" is part of this infantilization I was talking about. even when characters in the story do it, with good intentions, it's very silly! no, hobbits are not inherently pure hearted like children, some are greedy, selfish, cruel, and this can be true of any thinking being!
bilbo goes back to his house being auctioned, family members rejecting his identity and then calling him mad for decades. frodo lost his parents and his fellow hobbits started making up stories of them killing each other. and then... SMEAGOL, c'mon man that's all the proof you need

it's a tendency to infantilize him, i think
like, taking real character traits and twisting them around. optimistic➡naive, reserved/observant➡overly shy, empathetic➡crybaby

Written for @acorns-and-oakleaves 'Year of Bagginshield' March Prompt: Second Chances (very belatedly I'm sorry lmao <3)
Summary:
No words are spoken, but Thorin draws a rattling breath and steels himself. After everything he has done to Bilbo, he at least owes him more than this. “What happened?” Bilbo says, before Thorin gets there. “Did we make it to the mountain, did we find the door? The last thing I remember is Lake Town—I’m assuming the attempt to steal a bunch of weapons did not go well, then?” The words take a moment to sink in. When they do, Thorin finally understands what people mean when they say that the floor dropped out from right beneath their feet. --- Up on Ravenhill, Bilbo wakes a little earlier. It allows him to save Thorin's life, and almost—almost—costs him his own; which, as far as Bilbo is concerned, is a worthy exchange, no matter Thorin's own thoughts on the matter. If only the aftermath, and all that still stands between them, would be so clean-cut and easy to resolve.

Dwalin: "Thought ye were avoidin' this route to escape the hobbit's wrath"
Thorin: "It's been 2 days, I'm sure he's over it by now"
Bilbo: "Oh look, if it isn't the asshole under the mountain in his idiot hat"
Dwalin, whispering: "I think he's still mad"

Can YOU guys watch Thorin’s death scene like a normal person??
Or do you stop every 5 seconds, wail, stare at the screen and rewind??
I mean, his and Bilbo’s conversation is so to the point and intimate and painful and kind and and and and aaaahhh
I swear, I can't watch it in one go.
