MMJ Mix 021: Diego Navarro - i was ok for half an hour or so

From the transcendent ambient tones of his Nurture EP for Sweat Taste to a recent appearance on BRAT Records’ Absense compilation, experimental electronic producer Diego Navarro has had a stellar 2017. Based in the port city of Valencia, Spain, Navarro is creating some of the best music to surface from a rapidly growing circle of artists and netlabels that includes Yoshitaka Hikawa, JEROME, Airport, Eco Futurism Corporation, DJWWWW, and Flamebait. His new guest mix for MMJ is yet another deeply engrossing example of his eclectic musical style. Really choice cuts featured in this one, including tracks from Nico Niquo, ana jikia, HDMIRROR, and others.

MMJ Mix 020: HKE - Russian Rap (Mix)

Following a pair of deep SoundCloud singles and some tips to the return of チェスマスター on TKX Vault, Dream Catalogue boss HKE sat down and went into full god mode to make us this introductory mix to Russian hip-hop. I got into Russian rap music back a few years ago and have always been surprised at how little known it seems to be in the west, so I put together this mix I have been wanting to do for a long while with some of the best players to serve as an introduction to those who have never come across it before

Super stoked to receive this killer guest mix from Matt Mondanile aka Ducktails. Been in love with so much of this dude’s output for a while now -- from the classic lo-fi hypnagogia of his early psych tapes to his most recent St. Catherine LP -- so I’m pretty honored to finally release an exclusive set from one of MMJ’s all-time favorites. The gloriously romantic Wine and Cheese explores some pretty hazy summer funk vibes as well as some timeless cuts from artists like Ryuichi Sakamoto and Kashif. Italian prog-rock legends Sensations’ Fix and jazz great Stanley Clarke also feature. Grab a drink and scope the chill heatwave zones below.

MMJ Mix 017: ICY FLAME - I Ov The Storm

70+ minutes of warped electronica and intense post-bass/hybrid club sound design from the rising experimental producer. A truly stellar set recorded during one of the deadliest storms in recent memory which hit the artist’s home of Moscow last month.

“The journeys, as I like to name my sets, are always stories of self-transfiguration,” the sonic provocateur tells us. “But there are also deeper layers of meaning, ones guiding my urge to shape them.” 

“They are born of dreams -- I treat sound as universal media and as a tool for creating new myths,” he continues. “I believe, that we'll get the world we imagine and not the one we deserve. Myth, being the incarnation of the outer reaches of imagination and observation, might heal the wounds and light a path.”

Instead of a heart, a scorched desert. Mirrors of my eyes are searching for the starry sky, but they often find torrential rain on the edge of blackness. I pierced the sun with the blade of my dreams and its liquid fiery essence burns my hands. After every word uttered will come its own judge. The meaning is hidden in the shadows, and will reside, until a word so loud is born, that the idyllic narrative of time will twist.

What do you believe in? Great truths are empty, as empty are images of Cause and Desire. But if everything is allowed, then whose voice warns against filth? A voice of reason, tired and driven, or is it an echo from a fire once burned in the chest? Rather, it is the song of those who were before us, who also discovered an untreated diamond of yet to be written story on the site of the Promised Land.

Very pleased to be able to premiere the debut album from Berlin-based avant-garde duo INRA. Adam Ben-Nun and Philipp Rhensius’ zoned out free-improv jams are guaranteed to take you into another dimension. A marvelous cacophony of synths, guitar, drums, and mysterious samples. Really love it when these guys mix hypnotic freakazoid jazz drones with subtle electronic flourishes, as heard on the jungle-inspired “Ruth´s Disappointment And Foucault`s New World.” Magnificently bookended by two of the most psychedelic moments on the record w/ “At Least Newton Was Right”’s neo-sludge and the truly fantastic “After The Rave.”
