After years of neglecting this blog and letting it sink into obscurity, a most sudden and magical even forces it to rise up from the grave.
There had been talks of a "Wonka" prequel for a very long time - so long I thought the project was dead, to be honest. But no, it apparently does come out (unlike the Netflix CatCF cartoon which apparently will never see the light of the day).
I am already amazed that this actually comes out - but I am even MORE amazed at the fact that this looks good. This looks whimsical, and fun, and it has a sense of self-awareness much needed, and it doesn't seem to latch too much onto the actual movies we have, letting room for a truly new story to breathe in.
There was a script for a Wonka prequel that went around the Internet, and that I read, and it was AWFUL. It was a badly written edgy prequel that basically was trying to make Burton's Sweeney Todd the backstory of Willy Wonka. I am so glad that this movie looks the exact opposite.
I think what I like the most with this one is how they actually embrace the weird style and absurd humor of Dahl's original writing. You have these very serious policemen delivering very seriously lines such as "Nothing to see here, just people defying the law of gravity", and other little things like that, truly staying true to the British children work/British humor roots of it all.
All of that to say, this is a very pleasant surprise, and I will be waiting to see more!

Hi Neil, what's your opinion on the rewrite of Roald Dahl's works in the name of "making it available for all"?
Thanks.
I'm a lot more comfortable with this kind of thing when it's done by a living writer to existing work. I remember as a kid picking up a copy of John Masefield's Collected Poems, and seeing a 1930s errata slip in the book, which said in the poem London Town, replace
“‘And craftily fares the knave there, and wickedly fares the Jew.’
with
“‘But wretchedly fare the most there and merrily fare the few.’
And I nodded my 9 year old head in approval. Someone had pointed out to the poet that that line was awful, and he had fixed it.
I can't imagine anyone deciding to fix that line after the poet had died, though.
I removed a line from "The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish" (over the objections of my editor, who wanted to keep it) because too many people had reached out to me and told me it had upset them or their children on reading it, and I realised it was being taken in a way I hadn't intended. So on later editions it went away.
And having said that, language changes. Enid Blyton's children's books have been rewritten, her children renamed (farewell Dick and Fanny) and so forth, with the idea that the Blyton estate is a commercial entity that wishes to remain viable. The Dahl estate is in the same place. So is the Dr Seuss estate -- and they chose to simply let some of the earlier books go out of print. There comes a point where it's not about art, but about sustaining a commercial entity. And I don't know what I think about that.

After seeing Artmakerproductions's Candy Shop Of Horrors posts I had a couple of ideas on the subject, (he doesn't have to include them in his work, I just want to share them) and since his account is deactivated I was wondering if I could share them with you.
No thank you. Not that I do not appreciate the gesture, but I don't really make CatCF content anymore, and if you had something inspired by Candy Shop of Horror you definitively should adress ArtMaker since he is the sole maker, inventor and master of this specific project.
But again, while his Tumblr account got deactivated for whatever reason, he is still fully active and present on DeviantArt. Same name. You can go contact him there quite easily!

I was looking for Artmakerproductions and found that their account is deactivated, so I was wondering (if you don't mind me asking) are they okay on their end or?
Yep, he's okay. It happened quite recently - Tumblr deactived his account for no apparent reason. He has sent a complaint to Tumblr's "customer service" and is waiting for an answer. He and I are both baffled because there is no apparent reason for him to be deactived. My theory is that maybe someone reported him by mistake as a spam or bot, during the fight against the huge wave of porn bots that are launching a siege over Tumblr.
Hopefully it isn't too much of a bummer for him since his Tumblr account was mostly a "reblog account" where he reposted his favorite pieces from DeviantArt, but it is still an annoyance. If you want to find him, go check his DeviantArt account by the same name - not only did he posted there all that was on his Tumblr, but also many MANY more as it is his main account for posting art and there's many pieces unseen on Tumblr

CaTcFember Day 4: Dream
Charlie and Grandpa Joe decide to try some of Wonka’s fizzy lifting drinks. The drinks giving them the feeling of being lifted off the ground and going higher than a kite, and experience visions of Loompaland’s fearsome creatures, such as: the Snozzwanger, Hornswoggler, Wangdoodle and Vermicious Knid.
Inspired by the infamous Pink Elephants On Parade scene from Dumbo.

Wonka Genderbent AU @mask131 Edition (#2)
A revision and better showcasing of mask131/Illord’s idea for his version of a genderbent AU. That being Wonka’s outfit changes unnoticed and instantaneous for each room. 1) Chocolate Room: Took a witch influence for their outfit crossed w/ a snazzy zoot suit. 2) Inventing Room: Mad scientist w/ minor steampunk inspiration. 3) Nut Room: Animal handler. 4) Mostly lifted the outfits from the ‘71 film, only here (out of view) has bell bottoms. 5) After the tour is over and is on their casual wear.   …

Ah yes... it wouldn’t be one of my blogs if there wasn’t a Horror AU somewhere X)
Fun fact: this Horror AU is just one of a series of different attempts at a Horror AU I created, all sharing the same basic characters. Some were hits, some were miss, but overall this one turned out really good X) I know Halloween is passed by well - enjoy still the horror!

Classic 90s/80s Horror AU
1) - 2) Another AU of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Illord (known here on Tumblr as @mask131) and me, ArtMakerProductions. This time in a horror setting akin to an 80s/90s film. Each of the characters from the original story are placed in the archetypes that mirrors them best (ideas all by Illord, I am merely the artist visualizing his concepts): Augustus Gloop - Fool/Pot User Violet Beauregarde - A$$hole Athletic Jock Mike TeaVee - Nerd Veruca Salt - Whore/Sexy Girl Charlie Bucket - Virgin/Final Girl A few changes in this AU by Illord being Violet and Charlie’s genders being swapped ‘round to fill their given horror role better. Go read the (third iteration/version of the) story over on his page: www.deviantart.com/illord/art/… www.deviantart.com/illord/art/…

So... I originally didn’t plan on creating a genderbent AU... But seeing artmaker’s own AU and how I loved it, I thought “Well I can still try?”.
It was just a bunch of random ideas and concepts, but artmaker was kind enough to make drawings out of it - and I am still so thankful to him. ArtMaker, you’re a sweet soul :3

Wonka Genderbent AU @mask131 Edition
1) For his iteration of Wonka, the idea here was that they’d be androgynous and accept any form of being addressed (sir, mr, my dude, ma'am, lady, ms, etc.) and would both change colour and style of attire instantly (magically, you could say) w/o it being noticed by the tour group until after the fact. It would be themed for each room (mad scientist in inventing room for ex.).
2) A more refined look of this version.
3) Different colour palette options for the fanart I made for Illord’s own genderbent take of CaTcF AU. This one is of his idea of Wonka.
4) Augusta is a hillbilly child (loosely inspiration by Honey Boo Boo), Carmine is a mischievous trouble maker and lier (Bart Simpson as inspiration), and Warty is a emotionally stunted and sheltered rich boy (vacant stare and posture based on owl). Each has their own profile/chapter of their endgame for them written by mask131 over on DeviantArt under the username, Illord. I highly recommend you all check out, comment and favourite their work. 👍
Profiles: https://www.deviantart.com/illord/art/CatCF-Genderbent-Profiles-1-909758791
Augusta Gloop: https://www.deviantart.com/illord/art/CatCF-Genderbent-Augusta-Gloop-908511929
Carmine Beauregarde: https://www.deviantart.com/illord/art/CatCF-Genderbent-Carmine-Beauregarde-908516093
Warty Salt: https://www.deviantart.com/illord/art/CatCF-Genderbent-Warty-Salt-908513264
5) The Aftermath: a chocolate coated Augusta and is made into a skinnier version of herself (“who’d ever want to date a skinny girl?” ~ Mrs. Gloop), Carmine steals some experimental gum and is turned into a big bloated red tomato 🍅 rather than a blueberry 🫐, and Warty is experiencing terror, fear, anxiousness and pain for the first time ever in his privileged and sheltered life.
6) So in his iteration of the Oompa Loompas, Mask131 suggested fairies (particularly the ones ft. in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty as reference) and a connection that I made being that fairies are a opposite to little men (dwarves, imps, elves, etc.) w/ the former mostly associated w/ femininity and the latter w/ masculinity. An idea for this scenario is they function like a bee hive and have become queen-less due to the predation upon them in Loompaland and then title Wonka their new queen.
This AU belongs to @mask131  w/ the art done by yours truly, ArtMakerProductions; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory belongs to Roald Dahl.

Wonka From A Weird Dream I Had Two Years Ago…
About more than a two ago, I had a dream that had a different interpretation of Wonka in it. So, naturally after I woke up that morning I decided to draw it. Honestly, I have no clue as to what might’ve sparked my brain to think of the idea as it’s been a long time since I last saw the movies by that point. This is what I remember: Wonka was outside walking to the factory (well, more of a small building than an actual factory as this was before it became more grand in scale) w/ an even older gentleman in all black. The two men were discussing something… I think it was about who I presume to be Slugworth, about his shady activities and his questionable actions. You see, the history here, from what I’ve pieced together, is that before the events of CaTcF, the factory was owned by another gentleman from what I guess was the 1930’s and he had two apprentices: Wonka & Slugworth. Now, back in the present, the older gentleman is leaving the factory to one of them (guess to who it was?) Don’t know what happened next as that’s around when I woke up. That front portion of the building you see above is actually the original smaller building before the factory’s new additions (behind it) were added later. A bizarre little detail is the strong likeness of the real life Menier Chocolate Factory (Noisiel) had to the one I saw in my dream (give or take a few minor details) despite me never having heard of or seen it in any shape or form prior. Go figure I guess. ————- I forget who Wonka was “played by” in my dream (cause I remember that I saw his face and I don’t think it was Gene Wilder, but some other old actor w/ his likeness). Cause I know that the brain can’t think up 100% original faces, but only use ones you’ve already seen in life. Idk who it was though… …Oh well. Anyways, enjoy or whatever. Dreams are weird in what I’m getting at.
