Has smell ever made you remember something, somewhere or someone? If you grew up by the ocean like I did then maybe hot chips and scallops (potato cakes) trigger warm days, salty hair and sprinting across the car park with bare feet on hot tar.. ouch! There is a little science behind it, but Scents have the exceptional ability to instantaneously trigger vivid autobiographical memories—a phenomenon referred to as the Proust effect. How cool! While other stimuli can also (obviously) make us recall past memories, they are usually not as detailed, sudden, or vivid as those related to smells. Certain smells can suddenly and involuntarily transport us to a specific time and place. What makes smells so special? Why wouldn’t looking at a picture of your childhood home have the same effect as smelling its scent? Lombion, Bechetoille, Nezelof, and Millot (2012) proposed that this was because of how close our olfactory system is to our emotion and memory processing systems (amygdala and hippocampus, respectively). Why us? That’s easy! 1. We are vegan friendly, our wax is made from soybeans and our fragrances are made here in Sydney so we are able to ensure our oils aren’t tested on animals. 2. We use sustainably made woodwicks, they’re FSC approved. We choose not to use cotton wicks in our non pillar type candles due to the large amount of water required to manufacture cotton. 3. Our jars are produced by moulding the glass rather than the conventional hand blowing process. Due to the thicker wall of the jars, it's a much safer glass to use as the risk of breakages is reduced. Meaning you can reuse them! ♻️ either get in contact with us for a candle refill or give it a good clean and store dry food, stationery, decorative pot for plants, use it as a cocktail glass! Whatever you can think of. 4. Fragrance oil is arguably the most important aspect. It's the feature of the final product which captures people, reminds them of something and makes them fall in love with your range. In the beginning of our journey we trialled a lot of fragrances, and different brands from around the world, but we wanted to support local business and luckily the best option was based right here in Sydney. We use a mix of essential oils and oils derived from the plant itself - high doses of essential oils can be toxic to pets and babies, we didn’t want to have harmful doses in our products but still wanted to produce highly fragrant candles, that’s why we use a mix and it’s still free from nasty chemicals and palm oil. 5. Our jars are stylish, without sacrificing quality their timelessness is complimented by a contemporary curved finish on the base. Our body/pillar candles are iconic talking pieces to add to any room. Soy why soy? Soy wax is made from environmentally friendly, renewable resources; whereas classic paraffin wax is made from petroleum and is non-renewable. A lot of larger brands use paraffin wax to cut down on cost, but it can be harmful to your health. Not only are there environmentally friendly advantages to choosing soy wax over a different type of candle wax, but soy wax also burns slower than paraffin wax, meaning you get a candle that lasts longer. Alongside zero toxins, carcinogens or pollutants mean that soy candles are less likely to trigger allergies. Soy wax is much healthier for us and the environment. This planet-friendly substance doesn't emit any nasties into our atmosphere. When it comes to candles soy wax is an excellent fragrance carrier that does not require chemical amplifiers. The result is a well-balanced true to scent candle. To sum it al up, 1. Soy wax is a natural, renewable resource made from soybeans. 2. Soy wax is biodegradable and cleans up with plain old soap and water. 3. Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax and because of this, soy candles will burn slower or longer than paraffin candles. 4. Soy wax burns with zero petro soot, creating petro soot free candles. Unlike paraffin candles that a lot of the big brands use. 5.
