Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s possible for characters vs. what the audience sees. (This might feel really obvious or redundant to talk about, but I just need to get the words out of my system)
In Steven Universe, when a character can’t do something, it’s a bit of a big deal. They struggle with it, they fixate on it, entire episodes may be dedicated to this thing they’re unable to do. When a character can do something, but doesn’t, it’s never focused on or called out. But when it does finally happen, it underscores a huge moment for that character.
Tumblr media
As early as episode 10, it’s confirmed  that Amethyst is able to bubble Gems. The action itself is not a big deal for her. Maybe she’s done it lots of times offscreen, where the audience hasn’t seen it. But since it’s our first time seeing her do this, it underscores her growth in this character arc, as she sends her tormentor and kindred spirit away.

On the other end of things, Garnet’s refusal to ask questions in the present ends up being a highlight for her backstory–she’s only shown asking questions in the far, far past, to highlight her very first moments of being in comparison to how firm and completely certain she is of herself now.

One can assume that Greg has always had some manner of social life outside of Steven and the Gems, but it has never once been mentioned who his friends are or what he does when he’s not working or hanging out with Steven. To wait until after he’s reconciled with Pearl to mention any sort of social action underscores how much he was letting the past get in the way of his friendships before this point. Considering this same episode is about Pearl doing the same for her social life highlights that further.
No one ever calls out these actions, or lackthereof, within the show. Things that aren’t happening lay in wait, to emphasize important moments in a character’s development.
All this is to say…
Tumblr media
boy howdy they must be saving up Pearl shapeshifting for an absolute doozy.

you know in retrospect it's weird that the splatooniverse has a band called "the squid sisters" when, like... they Are squids. that's like if the real world had a band called "the human league"

People talk about the surprise albums from people like Taylor Swift or Beyoncé that drop with zero warning but I have just been existing in this world where every album I've ever heard in my life has been a surprise album because I didn't know that musicians had schedules that we could see

Jason’s resentment of Willis stemming from the fact that he often wasn’t there (in and out of jail, and then dead), and Jason misses him terribly, no matter that his absence was out of his control, it doesn’t make much difference to a child’s psyche and the Abandonment Issues develop-> Jason putting Catherine on a pedestal because no matter what state she was in or how bad she got, they were always together, and she was always there (I think 408/409 implies that they were homeless together but Rhato is more explicit about it)-> Catherine dies (and Willis isn’t there) and Jason is all alone-> smash cut to his death scene, Sheila is there, bearing witness. Sheila caused this situation but Jason forgives her in the moment, and will continue forgiving her every moment after. Maybe it’s because you can’t stay angry at someone who shares a grave with you. Maybe it’s because no matter what lead them there, when the clock ticked down, Sheila was there with him (and Bruce wasn’t, Bruce didn’t get there in time)-> Fathers fail to be there when you need their protection the most but mothers suffer with you

I swear some of you must be captioning images poorly on purpose. Either that or Tumblr’s piss-poor media literacy extends so far that people genuinely believe mindlessly writing whatever details they notice at random is somehow useful to people.
As an example, I saw a thread in which someone replied with a photo of a cat as a reaction to someone else’s post. It’s clear from context that the cat’s body language was meant to evoke a quiet thoughtfulness in response. Someone else followed up with an image description that went into excruciating detail about the cat’s coloration, its markings, its fur length, its eye color, then described the color of the paint on the walls, took time to mention the random objects in the background, and *didn’t* describe the cat’s pose whatsoever.
Look, if you’re going to try to “helpfully” caption an image, please make some effort to understand what the image is trying to communicate so that you can write a *useful* description. If someone says “wow, this is a weird looking cat” then sure, describe the markings in full detail. If someone goes “me when you take my juice box” with an angry-looking kitten, maybe talk about the cat’s stance and apparent expression and skip the part where you list every title you see on the bookshelf in the background.

public libraries are so sick. there are five books I want to read and they're all relatively new so they're only available in hardback which is so expensive but it just cost me $0 to place holds on them. five books for zero dollars. it requires nothing but clicking a button and then going to the library to pick them up when they're ready. zero dollars. that's crazy
