I saw some of your sewing works and you are really good at it! I was wondering how you learned to sew so well.
Like, did you have a family member or friend who taught you or did you take a course??
Or maybe you taught yourself through trial and error??
You don't have to answer this if you don't want to. I just wanted to tell you I like your creations!
Have a nice day!~
thank you so much, i appreciate the question :)
i’m self-taught - i started out trying to follow tutorials but i wanted to go back and really learn the fundamentals of sewing because i wanted to make my own patterns, and i only make and sew my own patterns now. a few things helped me:
practicing the sewing basics - hand stitching, learning when to use what stitch, etc.
patternmaking books - i tried to study them for some time to learn the fundamentals (patternmaking for fashion design by helen joseph armstrong is the best one!)
youtube (withwendy was one of my favourites when i started learning, very helpful that she would include here own trial and errors in sewing videos) - youtube was helpful in learning how to make specific things
trial and error - sewing all the time, making mistakes, redoing things constantly, etc. i try to sew as much as i can (a lot of things don’t get finished lol, but i always learn something!)
i never studied fashion but i did study architecture and to me they are very similar and it likely helped me, being able to understand the relationship between 2D + 3D is very important for patternmaking (and architecture). i love working with my hands which i can’t do with architecture so to me fashion is architecture for the body :)
