As much as I like the whole “Jaskier has an abused past” aspect, and given we know very little about his past except that he’s from Redania in Lettenhove and he’s the Viscount of said place, and he has a cousin who works for the Kerack king, there’s nothing to say that wasn’t his past.
But there is a HUGE part of me that likes the idea that he had a happy childhood, privileged and ignorant, until going to Oxenfurt and while there, having a crash course in reality and what people suffer everyday. Like a conservative kid going to college and Waking Up. He leaves Lettenhove with aspirations to be a professor until his time as Viscount is called for, making his parents proud and continuing the Pankratz name.
BUT HOW CAN HE WHEN THERE’S ACTUALLY AN ENTIRE WORLD OUT THERE. HIS PARENT’S VIEWS ARE WRONG, THEY’RE SO WRONG AND ENTITLED AND HE CAN’T BELIEVE HE USED TO THINK LIKE THAT TOO, HE NEVER QUESTIONED IT… HOW DID HE NEVER QUESTION ANY OF IT-
Valdo Marx is his old friend who still holds those views and their vicious rivalry stems from Valdo being a bigot and Jaskier cannot stand it
Jaskier at thirteen would have turned his nose up at Geralt, probably would have never stepped foot in the peasant tavern in backwater Posada, pah! Jaskier at eighteen sees a minority who’s spat on and abused by bigots like Valdo and his parents, and wants to do something about it
