“A Little Sacrifice” is my favorite story in the whole Witcher, because it’s right here, in my opinion. Jaskier's true character is revealed to us.

So tomorrow, we get a teaser trailer about The Witcher Sirens of the Deep. If anyone is unaware, there is an upcoming animated film based on the short story A Little Sacrifice.
Now, I don't know about anyone else, but I'm excited and curious about how the characters will look. This will be the first time seeing Essi Daven, so she probably looks like how she describes in the books, but I wonder about Geralt and Jaskier.
Are they going to take after their Netflix actors' appearance?
Their game version appears.
Hell, maybe they'll even look like how they are described in the books.

Im super hyped for the Sirens of the Deep movie for a few reasons, first of all, we are getting Doug Cockle as Geralt! can't wait to see him interacting with Joey Batey`s version of Jaskier
the animation looks like its either Mir or Powerhouse two of my favorite art styles
and we finally get to see A Little Sacrifice adapted for the first time and see Essi Daven! there are no references to her or this story in any adaptation in the original Polish TV show, the games, comics or even a Gwent card, which is surprising considering this is one of the saddest and most memorable of the short stories

LadyCibia I absolutely adore all your chibi art, especially your chibi Witcher series! Your recent art with the book versions of the characters made me so happy because the Witcher books have less of a fandom online than the Netflix show and the games so I love when people make art/meta/fic, etc. about them. What were your favorite scenes/parts of the books?
What a lovely message, thank you very much!! ; v ; 💛💛💛 I'm so happy you're enjoying them! Let me offer you a silly doodle inspired by my favourite short story and then I'll answer your question under the cut X3

The first thing that came to my mind after reading your question was Dandelion charming his way into Brokilon Forest to find Geralt, so of course there's that. Then, if we're talking about the main plot (so from Blood of Elves to Lady of the Lake), my favourite scenes are basically all the ones featuring Geralt's hansa, ahah! But if I had to pick one, the fish soup chapter is probably my favourite. I'd also like to mention Dandelion and Yennefer's short exchange at the beginning of Blood of Elves (if I remember correctly?) and Ciri's training in Kaer Morhen, which, unfortunately, it's one of the reasons The Witcher Season 2 was a disappointment to me ;;
Main plot aside, I really appreciate short stories and "Monster of the Week" episodes, so I had a great time reading the first two books (especially because I love fairy tales and their twisted versions...despite the fact that some of them are already quite twisted on their own) and I really enjoyed Season of Storms! As you can see, my favourite short story is A Little Sacrifice, its ending always gets me (but I could read and re-read them all again and again without getting tired). I've recently bought the comic book adaptation of A Grain of Truth and I really hope more short stories will get adapted in the future!

Not me realizing there are vague parallels in “A Little Sacrifice” to Jaskier’s and Radovid’s situation 😭 the prince and the siren having to make a decision to give up something to be with one another, the prince deciding to go with the siren and sacrifice his home HELP

So, apparently, there's an actual short story called "A Little Sacrifice" where a Prince falls in love with a real mermaid in The Witcher's universe...
And Netflix is supposed to release an anime called "Sirens of the Deep", where Geralt and Jaskier get involved in the situation.
My question is: will this be happening before or after the events of Season 3?!
Because having a freaking Prince (Radovid) hearing Jaskier's songs, finding them "irresistible", and becoming heavily drawn to him as a result gives off crazy strong Prince/Siren vibes.
And metaphorically speaking, the whole song follows their story arc in Season 3 right down to the "twilit red horizon" (Redania's color is red, so is obviously blood and its association with death and murder...) and the Prince sadly immediately "sinking to darkest night" on his very first attempt to swim.
So, if Jaskier and Geralt had already met a mermaid and a Prince that had fallen in love with each other before the events of Season 3, and Jaskier had already written a whole ballad about it (that Ciri ended up learning) before he met Radovid, I'm thinking his own situation would have felt like such an insanely strong case of déjà vu!
[Note: In the short story, it's the Siren that swaps fin for foot, not the Prince. If the song is about "Sirens of the Deep", this means that either the ending of the short story has been changed...
... or something bad happened as a result of the mermaid's choice, and Jaskier decided to give them a different ending where the Prince attempts to become a mermaid, but finds himself sinking and needing the Siren's help (to embrace him and the choice he made, regardless of its consequences)?]
Otherwise, that means Jaskier composed that ballad with Radovid in mind in Season 3.
And then, on his travels with Geralt, winds up meeting an actual mermaid that fell in love with a freaking Prince - essentially facing the same dilemma he's been going through with Radovid - and probably would be going "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?! Is the world trying to fucking tell me something?! Unbelievable!"
I can already imagine the conversations...
Sh'eenaz: You couldn't possibly understand what it's like to -
Jaskier: Save it! I wrote a fucking song about it! And you know what? It was a pretty good one, too! Filled with plenty of symbolism and poetry... But you two just had to show up and turn it into a literal thing, didn't you? Now, each time people will be singing my song, they'll just believe it's all about Prince Aglobal -
Sh'eenaz: Agloval
Jaskier: Whatever! And forget I had already seduced a Prince with my songs, and been offered to go live with him in a castle before you two even met! Oh! And by the way, my Prince is now the King of Redania - the most powerful nation of the Northern Kingdoms - the only one that might be able to stop the Nilfgaardians! He's way more important than -
Sh'eenaz: So, did you accept?
Jaskier: Accept what?
Sh'eenaz: To give up the life you had before to be with him?
Jaskier: *Forgets all about his rant and lets out a heavy sigh.*. It's complicated... *Hesitates* I think I might have? Especially if Ciri had decided she wanted to go to Redania to unite it with Cintra, and become the Queen she'd always dreamed of becoming... But then, Ciri went missing, the Second War began, he actually did offer to come with me instead, but then his brother was brutally murdered and he was crowned King instead...
Sh'eenaz: So, he was willing to sacrifice his world for you?
Jaskier: I guess... I mean, I think he meant it...
Sh'eenaz: Well, at least you two breathe the same air, and you can both walk... And Geralt's mate, from what I've heard, is a powerful sorceress that knows how to create portals. It's not like you can't quickly travel between your two worlds when you miss your family, thanks to her, and he can't accompany you on those visits at times, too...
Jaskier: ...
Sh'eenaz: ...
Jaskier: Yeah, I think your Prince should definitely follow you at sea. Humans are idiots.
Sh'eenaz: Well, if he does, maybe you could write a ballad about us; make it one where a Prince falls in love with a dashing travelling bard, then chooses to renounce his throne to accompany him on his travels?
Jaskier: Yeah, you wait right here in your *motions at the bay surrounding them* little pond; I'll go see your Prince and either convince him to come here and join you, or grab and throw him right into the sea myself! After that, I've got a King to catch...

Now I'm having feelings about the parallel between "A red sky at dawn is giving a warning / You fool, better stay out of sight" from Her Sweet Kiss and "His choice was made aside the sea, a twilit red horizon / For she had finally made him see his place among the sirens" from A Little Sacrifice.
Both have the red sky, but of them is a warning at dawn in a song about the end of a relationship and one is a resolution in the evening in a song about the growth and perseverence of a relationship. Both are love songs, but one of them is about the destruction wrought by a kiss and the other is about the victory of embracing each others' sacrifices.
Maybe it has to do with Jaskier's growth and change of perspectives through the seasons, maybe with the context in which they're written, or maybe I'm reading into nothing, but it makes me emotional regardless.

fic snippet (intended to be part of a much longer pre-season 3 fic, but i think i’m very funny and clever so i’m sharing this now):
“Any requests, princess?”
Jaskier has been a persona non grata in Cintra all of Ciri’s life (she’s identified at least two reasons why by now) so she’s not familiar with his work.
“Play a love song, but a sad one.” It would suit the sort of mood she was in.
“Oh, I have the perfect song for that. It’s about a man and a siren. Geralt hates it,” Jaskier said with a smile.
“Because that’s not what happened.”
“And what did happen, my dear Witcher?”
“Firstly, she’s a mermaid, not a siren. And they’re happily married.”
“Oh ho ho! That, I sincerely doubt. People who wed that quickly and without even bothering to learn each other's languages rarely are. And people scoff when I say you’re the romantic of the two of us.”
Geralt’s mouth bowed into something dangerously close to a pout.
“Just play the song, bard,” Yennefer snipped. And Jaskier looked at her, all soft like he was totally certain she didn’t mean it, and Yennefer smiled apologetically for a single moment before she dropped her gaze.

No one talks enough about Dandelion’s wholesome interactions with Essi Daven and Shani.
Nothing sexual but like they’re his younger siblings.
Sad we don’t have a live-action version of them.
