I feel bad that I’ve kind’ve been jumping in and out with this blog recently, but! I have something new I set up that I hope y’all might like! And that is (drumroll please…..)

I set up commissions!!!!! If anybody wants a piece from me, all the instructions are in this google doc!

I will say right now I’m sadly only able to take USD😔😔. Sorry to all my international friends. I’ll be looking into ways to change that but it might take a while.

I was struck with the urge to draw my two babypollos, so I did that, but then Trojan Apollo demanded to be drawn, and then Fall of Greece Apollo kind of snuck in at the end. So now I have double the Apollos I started with.

Ok! Had to take a bit of a break for personal reasons (thank you guys sm for the support and patience!) BUT, I should be back, barring any sort of crazy irl shenanigans (knock on wood). As an offering, have my freehand studies of Apollo statues, as I tried to find features I could steal and integrate into my style.

First pass, I accidentally deleted the statue I was using as reference and also ewww gross I hate this one

second pass, ok alright, we're getting somewhere, I'm feeling it.

Third pass. I am no longer feeling it. Wtf happened. Alien looking ass.

Fourth pass. We are back on the saddle. However I am veering sharply towards realism and it is scaring me. This means it's time to ditch the references and stylize, leading to...

The fifth and final pass! I tried mixing the features I picked up from the statues with the style I already had, and it kind of worked? Idk how I feel about it. I feel more confident in my color placements tho so that's cool.

Fun fact! A lot of Ancient Greek pots and statues were actually sculpted by one person, and then given to someone else to paint! We have a lot of pots with signatures of two different people bc of this. So I’m thinking:

Apollo finishes making Kayla and then gives the baby sculpture to Darren like “Now it’s your turn!” And a confused Darren basically does color by numbers with his daughter (who is made of terracotta???) Later in life Kayla goes to her dad like “father why is my hair three different colors” and Darren is like “I am not good at mixing paint ;-;”

Also! I’m stealing @ukelele-boy ‘s idea of Prometheus teaching Apollo how to sculpt people and adding the thought that before this Apollo had only ever sculpted using a pottery wheel (mainly making pots to help his mom store things). He picks up sculpting with his hands really quick, but one night when he’s curious (and really drunk) he’s like hmmmmmm maybe I can make something living using a pottery wheel. He ended up making this round little creature, and then he goes all overboard like “they’re like a mix between PIGS and MICE and they’re SPIKY and they can PREDICT THE WEATHER and they HIBERNATE like ME and-“

TOA APOLLO SCULPTING KAYLA AS A BABY… he accidentally dug his fingers in a little too hard when sculpting her face and now she’s got dimples!! he spent AGES trying to get the polish of her skin to reflect right. he flicked glowing drops of sun onto her skin to give her freckles!!!! he is a bit clumsy and left god fingerprints on her back and forgot to smooth them over!! (“SO THAT’S WHAT THE GIGANTIC WEIRD MARKS ON MY BACK ARE???” “KAYLA MY DARLING CHILD I’M SO SORRY” “NO THAT’S SO COOL?? ALSO OH MY GOD THIS REALLY PUTS IN PERSPECTIVE FOR ME HOW BIG GODS USUALLY ARE. WOAH. THAT’S CRAZY.”) MAYBE SHE’S GOT A BIT OF DISCOLOURING / ODDLY TEXTURED AREA WHERE APOLLO’S TEARS FELL ON HER AND MIXED WHEN HE HAD TO GIVE HER AWAY.

#was this an excuse to show you all that Ancient Greek sculptures of hedgehogs exist? maybe #also they did believe hedgehogs predicted the weather at the time. Left this abandoned in the drafts (which is a bit ironic) but it's a spin on this post, where instead of Apollo just being locked in some room on Olympus somewhere, he's bound to the ruins of an abandoned Ancient Greek city. Maybe somewhere near Delphi, maybe Troy, idk.

Except the volcanic eruption was MUCH more catastrophic #but because the eruption was so big the people on the island had warning signs for like a decade before it happened #So we have ruins that have been perfectly preserved but there are no bodies #Bc all the people were able to evacuate before the disaster #I mean there aren't even animal corpses at these sites they got everyone out #Fun fact this is also considered to be a large reason why Minoan civilization ended up falling apart #ANYWAYS all that aside I heard “abandoned ruins that have been perfectly preserved in ash” and immediately thought “Hmmmm yes ... suffering #Though to be clear I would not put Apollo in the ruins of ancient Thera (Tho the thought of him being the local cryptid of Santorini is fun #But you know what other city was burned to the ground?
