Exploring a character’s mental state is a great way to add further depth to their character, and to show the impact of everything happening around them. It can be a highly complex thing, and there really is no strict way to write it, but there are several important factors to consider when writing about a character struggling mentally.
1. Analyze the way they interact with their surroundings. Do they become more introverted? Are they more anxious in quiet spaces or loud spaces? Do they lash out at those around them?
2. Show how they change their reactions to certain events. For example: in the beginning of a story, a character is faced with a bully. They take the beatings and the words. At the end of the story, they’re faced with them again, and don’t stop to think. They just jump in and fight back. An incident such as this represents how the character finds themself becoming more and more short tempered and unpredictable.
3. If you’re writing in first person, utilize their inner thoughts. Maybe they have a hard time keeping a coherent train of thoughts, or they tend to fixate on something that has hurt/impacted them. Seeing firsthand how their mental state has changed will really show the reader: look at what they’ve become. This is what’s happened. See it for yourself.
4. Understand that there is no set way to write a character losing their sanity. Take Jinx from Netflix’s ARCANE, for example (yes, I’m referencing Arcane in a post again. You can’t stop me <3). This character tends to show her declining mental state through frequent “episodes,” in which she hallucinates and sees/hears various things that all tie back to the origin of her trauma. Meanwhile, another character may find themselves in a more constant state of struggle.
5. Consider how their surroundings impact them. Do they have people to support them? Are they alone? Are they in a place where they can seek help, or are they left to their own devices? Do they acknowledge that they need help, or are they unable to realize it?
6. Show shifts in:
• personality
• outside interactions
• inner thoughts
• mood
• their priorities & goals
• relationships

Note: if you don’t agree with the tips here, or want to use these beginnings anyway, please do! This list is not to dictate what anyone can write. It’s merely advice I’ve gathered in my time speaking with industry professionals such as literary agents, editors, etc.
1. Waking up
These beginnings are especially common on wattpad. In essence, the main character wakes up, and we follow them through their morning routine (usually as a parent or someone else yells at them to hurry.)
This is one I would advise staying away from. It isn’t exciting, it doesn’t tell us much about the main character as a person, and it’s pretty overdone.
Still want to use it? Try making them wake up, but from something interesting. Maybe they were knocked out in the streets, or fell asleep on the edges of a battle after being wounded. Maybe they fell asleep somewhere they weren’t supposed to, and now they’re in trouble.
2. Dreaming
Starting off your story in a character’s dream is very confusing to the reader. A general rule of thumb is that the opening pages are to introduce your main character, and a dream doesn’t exactly do that. While it may reveal an emotional aspect to their character, it’s not something to use if we don’t know the character yet! On the contrary…
3. A giant description of the character
This is what we like to call “info-dumping.” An example could be as follows;
“I look into the mirror at my blonde hair and green eyes. My name is Amy John. I am 18 years old. I am studying your mom at university. I also go to Your Dad university. I play 2 sports: badminton and snowboarding. I have 4 siblings. Today, I’m wearing-“
Notice how you probably got bored reading that? You should introduce your character through the way they interact with their surroundings and the things they do! Info-dumping about your character is a pretty quick way to turn a reader away.
