Providing an update about Koi Footwear and their use of AI 'art' in one of their marketing emails- they replied to me via instagram this lunchtime & for transparency I am sharing their response publicly (sorry for the long tumblr post!)

sharing their response publicly because I believe people should be allowed to read it and make up their own opinion about this situation themselves

personally, I am glad they apologised, BUT I had hoped they would make a public apology. I've asked them to make a public apology, so they may still do this. and I am still sorta baffled that no one in their creative team said "hey, maybe using AI 'art' is a terrible idea?" lmao

another day, another company I have to callout for using AI 'art' and I'm really disappointed with this one because since I discovered them last year, I've been a big fan of Koi Footwear

please reblog, I think it's important to highlight when companies, especially in the creative industry use AI

once they confirmed they'd used an AI generated image in one of their marketing emails I replied & I think I put it pretty succinctly why I am so disappointed with them and I want them to know that using AI 'art' makes them look cheap & lazy and isn't a good look to other artists

what do I want by making this post? I don't want them to use AI 'art' in any aspect of their business, it feels like a slap in the face to artists & creatives who buy their shoes & merch. maybe I'm asking too much, but I would also want them to apologise for their use of AI

don't care enough to hire a real artist to make a cute graphic for your marketing email? cool, then go ahead and start asking the AI to design the shoes for you, then you can save money and get rid of all your human designers!

final point: but there is some bitter irony here that they have a whole page on their website dedicated to their ethics... I guess that doesn't extend to the unethical use of AI, huh?

Normally I wouldn't bother making a post like this but it came to my attention yesterday via a twitter thread that tumblr user fridaypls is using AI elements in their fanart. Now, if they were doing this because they didn't feel entirely confident in their artistic ability, and they were just doing this for fanart they posted online, then I'd shrug my shoulders and go "eh, whatever"

However, I then found out that fridaypls is selling this fanart and even making posts like "buy my Gale print and get Tim Downie to sign it" and I just can't sit idly by whilst someone makes profit off AI 'art' and there are so many other artists (myself included) trying to make a living off our own art.

The tweet thread about the use of AI by fridaypls can be viewed here and here but I'll also copy and paste some of the examples under a cut line in this post.

So far on twitter, fridaypls got wind of the thread going around about them and they deactivated their account rather than take accountability. I'm probably going to be blocked by them for making this post, but I encourage you to reblog this and spread the word and please, PLEASE don't buy artwork from someone using AI generated images. There are so many other hardworking artists out there making amazing fanart and merch that you can give your money to instead.
