I found that there is so many elements in “Tears”, for simplifying my idea, i designed to cut out some of them.

I cut the DNA shape object, since I think it actually cant help the presentation of the main theme “善惡到頭終有報” and I’ll share my final idea in the following post. 

Updated Material list

I keep angle bar and iron wire as the necessary material, and I will introduce the presentation of each materials:

Iron wire:             as EYES

12 Angle bars:    The prison of sins

20 Hemp rope:    Binding of the “truth”

20 Iron nails:        as Eyelash

1 Iron tap:            as Pupil

For the size of installation, the length of those angle bar is around 1.8m-2m;  the maximum width of the eye is 1m.

Final Idea

Crying in the Sins

Base on “善惡到頭終有報”, we may need to face the punishment after we do wrong thing. There are also punishments waiting for those guilty person after they dead.

This new installation is going to show hows people feel when they are facing their sins and ending directly. Cry or not to cry? That base on what your true nature.

Add one element for “Tears”

For the loading problem, I designed to use angle bar to build a home-like scaffolding for the installation. 

My original idea is to demonstrate some criminal in a house, and now I use the idea to draw out the exhibition area. Because of the place limit, the “Tears” should build smaller so that I can make sure it can store into a human-height angle bar. 

Nylon is used to hang the CD as pupil and also the whole eyes. I am still designing the material, since I am not sure wether it can effort the whole eyes or not; otherwise I would use hemp rope for that part. 

Since I have a programming need to display, I designed to use an Ipad as the media player. Furthermore, a desk is placed below to hold the Ipad, also the whole work.

The important material is iron wire which use to contexture to outlook of the whole installation: from the appearance of eyes to DNA helix. Furthermore, a CD use hang into the hollow as the pupil. 

Hot glue is one of the important tool too. Since I want to create my own lake of life, water-like texture is required, apart from bonding those material together, I’ll use hot glue to create the water form. 

Depend on the budget, colored-hot glue (black) may use to create the different color of tear; otherwise color marker will use on painting the hot glue DNA.

Inspiration 5 

DNA sculptures  For Cancer Research UK

There are in total 21 DNA sculptures in this series of sculpture; each of the designers was asked a question - “what’s in your DNA?" and the results are a combine of intriguing and colorful designs.

The most impress sculpture is the one which compose several blue line into a DNA helix, the line-shape is more attractive than others solid sculpture. That’s make me wanna use iron wire as the material of my installation. A messy feeling can create a raw feeling for the DNA to show everyones’ life is not born to be mechanization, we have our responsibility to live out our own life 

Inspiration 4

DNA In All Living Things     By Bill Sanderson

This is a conceptual artwork demonstrating the universality of DNA and the genetic code in all living things. The DNA double helix make up the man’s face; on the helix, there contains yeast, a flowering plant, a sheep, a fruit fly, a pig and a flatworm, in addition all organisms can be use at genetic research.

The idea of eyes combining DNA is come from this painting while the meaning is different. Eyes capture all detail thing in our daily life, no matter the result is good or bad, tears maybe one of the way to carry all memories.

This is the Lompoc Hospital DNA Sculpture. It made up with brushed stainless steel and the stained glass as the base.

Inspiration 2

This is an interesting product I found in Etsy, which is a DNA art called “Tree of Life”. Sheet Metal and Acid Patinas are used to build the tree-shaped model; while the color is painted by airbrush.

Tree is the representative of longevity, we can immediately think of life when seeing the work; colorful painting can show the variety of life. Since it is made of metal, I think the transparency is good to represent life. 

In addition, transparency remind me can use hot glue to create the DNA sequence. Since my main concept is tears, water-like is the form I want to create and hot glue really can satisfy this need.

Inspiration 1

This is one of an artwork from “The Mind Museum” in Philippines. 

The museum's mission is to provide an extraordinary educational experience that inspires the public to understand nature and the picture show above is one of an installation about DNA.

The installation is demonstrating different DNA pattern of vary organism. For the structure, the upper is the outlook of the organism and we can see that there is tree and insect; the middle part is showing the colorful DNA pattern while the lower part part has an screen to interact with audience, also pick up the role on the role on introduction the science knowledge. 

About Causality 

This is a rough understanding: People should bear the consequences for what they have done. However, this is not a social norm, bad people may not suffer after their misconduct and that’s why I don’t prefer displaying the retribution.

Since “Good 善“ and “Bad 惡“ are something personal, rather than state out my value, I choose to use color to represent the feeling of word; Black and White are the common color to show positive and negative stuff.

For the programming or the video, some Chinese vocabulary will also appear. Following are those related word: “善“ “惡“ “報應“ “人之初“ “性本善“ “好人好報“ “惡有惡報“ “地獄“ “黑白分明“ etc. 

New Idea - “Tears”

Here’s my new idea of GT - “Tears”.

It is an installation which combine eyes, DNA with programming to demonstrate to flow of life base on the theory “What goes around comes around”.

Eyes is in-the-word our “Window of soul” , what we see can directly but not truly identify good or bad. Yes, it is unfair, but it is really true in out life.

Tears can represent what we experienced during life, and I separate two color for tear: transparent (milky-like) and black. Use the from of DNA because the experience also cannot be change; when they gather up which represent the End of life.

For the lake-like programming, the words or graphic related to causality will come out and the water-flow effect will apply. One important, milky and black tears gather will sightly change to the grey color in lake. 

Change of idea

Since there is running out of time, I want to change my idea for a bit......

Original Set-up

A box will be created as a house; inside the house, there are 3 floor and each floor has one screen. In the story, the installation will record a day of a human, he will commit in different crime: like stealing, smoking or bullying stray dog etc. While the screen will display a parallel universe to show the retribution of the criminal. 

For the material, cardboard is used to build the hold house; about the loading issue, I decided to stick or use monopod to support the ipad-size screen.

In 1/F, a protruding door is built. A stationary model is bullying a stray dog; the screen will play a 2D animation that he is suffer in Niu Hang Hell (牛坑地獄) which attacked by wild ox.

In 2/F, a thief is stealing in a house; while the animation will show he is suffer in Volcano hell (火山地獄 ) which the volcano and burned without death.

In 3/F, a man is smoking in the terrace. Since it is a personal stuff, I hate people smoke at all, so in the parallel universe he will suffer too.

For the animation, the storyline will show the result the character should suffer depend on what he did before; from the traditional Chinese history...

When people are alive, if they waste food and ruin the grain, for example, if the leftover banquet is freed, or if you do not like to eat, you will throw it away. After death, he or she will be thrown into 12th floor of hell (舂臼地獄) and put into the shackles. It's rare to say that if you talk when you eat, especially swearing, slang, squatting, you also need to suffer in 12th floor of hell.

Back to the story, for instance when the character wasted food he will go to the 12th floor of hell and put into the shackles, torture from bogeymen the person. A parallel universe will be shown in the animation, depend on the installation, it will be roughly same with the original one but with some twisted detail, for instance, if the main character is undergo commit suicide, his figure in the family picture which hanging on the wall will disappear to represent the unloyalty. A 3D house model will be make with a cross-section view and by the main material of ultra light clay. 

Around 4 rooms will build up with the living room; each space also have a little man model and undergo different wrong thing even criminal. There is a stationary story that I want audience to see what happening thought the clay work and the rough storyline will start when the main character comes home and walk around the house; he may throw his clothe, shoes other belongings everywhere; go to kitchen drink half-cans of cola and throw into trash bin; then he may go room and watch adult video and falsely report the age and finally commit suicide during do the huge amount of homework. For clearly show the emotion or detail of those character model, 3D printing and magnifier may apply; since 3D printing can create a more detail model while the use of magnifier is to build up the God-view and let audience to see or even make trail on the character.
