HAVE YOU SEEN GOD?
December 2022 Acrylic on Canvas and Embroidery Thread.
20 X 16 Inches
A piece inspired by the story of Jacob wrestling the angel. Jacob wrestling with the angel is described in the book of Genesis(also referencing Hosea). The "angel" is referred to as "man" and "God" in Genesis, while Hosea references an "angel". The account includes the renaming of Jacob as Israel ("contends-with-God").
In the book of Genesis, Jacob spent the night alone on a riverside during his journey back to Canaan. He encounters a "man" who he wrestles with until daybreak. In the end, Jacob is given the name "Israel" and blessed, while the "man" refuses to give his name. Jacob then names the place where they wrestled Penuel which translates, as "face of God" or "facing God".
This is a work about wrestling with faith in God, and how as we grow we come to face this battle with religious beliefs and trauma we fight to feel grace, and we have fear of losing our spot in heaven. Will I go to hell? Or will everything be ok? Do I have a choice?
