If there is one thing that should be known about me: I love, above all else, to ramble. I ALWAYS feel like it.
😇 Religious headcanon- I was actually thinking about this recently for reasons. Bedivere and his family do not strike me in any way as Catholic, or even Christian. I'm going to go ahead and say they're of a more druidic or a traditional pre-Christian Anglo-Saxon persuasion.
As an aside finding information regarding pre-Christian religious practices from that area that aren't biased as hell is like pulling teeth and if anyone has any reading/documentary recommendations please send them my way.
🫂 Friendship headcanon- Arthur is his bestie. You don't get to be butler like that if you're not. I was actually going to do some more comics with these two expanding on that relationship. Also: lifelong bromance ends with one hugging the other to death. That's good shit.
👽 Weird Quirk headcanon- Okay, so, I think it'd be cool if Griflet had some fairy weirdness about him. Not sure exactly what, maybe just a stronger connection to the wind or nature in general, maybe out-and-out magic, but I think it'd be fun! It also makes a pretty fun dynamic where the painfully responsible and (by comparison) normal Bedivere and Lucan have this deeply weird and esoteric cousin that they treat as completely ordinary. Don't even react when something magic happens. That's just cousin Griflet who receives grim portents from the other side on the breeze sometimes, no big deal.

🪢 Family Headcanon - I think Lucan, Bedivere, and Griflet are all incredibly close but in a 'normal functional family' way and not the 'Keeping Up With The Orkneys' way. As for how Kay fits into things... I think Lucan and Griflet like to mess with him. Nothing too mean-spirited, but being brother and cousin to his boyfriend as well as buddies with Arthur leave them as two of the only people to walk Earth who can get away with it.

❤️🔥 Romantic headcanon- So Kay's got that whole icy heart thing, right? Here's my pitch: Bedivere rests his head on Kay's chest directly over it when he gets migraines.
🔪Violence headcanon- Kay's got a thing for violence. He and Guinevere have that in common and they chat about the horrific acts of blood and suffering inflicted by their paramours to the horror of any eavesdroppers.

👻 Biggest Fear- I think he'd be afraid of something like rats, mice, or cockroaches. As for less literal fears... I think he'd be the type to be all 'I have to put up with you people' and 'I don't get paid enough for this shit' but the literal SECOND he's left alone, like actually alone, he starts spiraling.
💔 Angst!- A horrible mix of perfectionism and desperate need for approval/recognition leaves local man in a constant state of anxiety and dread! Relating to that and also piggybacking off of the previous prompt... Imagine what he'd be like after Camlann!

Comics and the like are going to start up again! Within the past 4 months I got a job, called OSHA on a job, quit a job, got another job, got sick, and injured myself at least twice. Probably more, I don't remember. The good news is that I got a whole desk to work on so I no longer need to sit scrunched up to use my tablet!
Also Galahad won that little poll I put out and I'll have some more information on what's going on there this coming Friday! Stay tuned!

for the Arthurian ask game!
♘ - Favorite Knight/King
Bedivere. Hands down, no questions, no ifs ands NOR buts! He has been since I was 14 and forevermore shall he be. And god damn it I will drag that man into at least some of the public consciousness or so help me.
I've talked about him at length several times so the TL;DR is: I think that his position in the narrative and the fact that he lives so long on top of having a disability means that he's OOZING with potential for really interesting characterization. He's an untapped gold mine that only fanfiction has ever scratched the surface of. (As an aside, I love all of you Bedivere fanfic writers! You are the sole reason I don't starve.)
The favorite runners up are Kay and Agravaine.
Kay because goddamnit I like super powers and comedy and he's got both. He's fun! Also he's just straight up the most relatable character for me.
Agravaine because he's hot.
because he was specifically made to appeal to me personally.
because I would do unspeakable things to that man.
because he's a character with a lot of depth and nuance and I have great taste that isn't at all affected by impure, base thoughts. Only staunch intellectualism and a rigid adherence to the sanctity and dignity of Arthuriana as a whole.
🗡️- Who am I betting on in this month's tournament?
So me and the porters actually have a separate pot going where we actually bet on who is going to lose money. Some of that pot goes to paying off some of the knights to take a fall too, and it's all very, very illegal but I usually walk away with a cool 70 shillings at the least so I think it's worth it. Don't tell the guard.
If I WERE to bet on someone actually in the tourney, it'd be whatever fair unknown has shown up most recently.

😤 - Your Most Specific Nitpick About Your Fave
Yay! Complaining! My favorite!
Okay, so my favorite is Bedivere (if I haven't made that so painfully obvious by now) and it is such slim pickings for him even appearing much less appearing and being used well. The biggest one is people just up and forgetting he's disabled. The guy has one hand, goddamn it! That's literally his defining feature! The singular thing that makes him unique, seeing as there's a cavalcade of 'handsomest guys who are good at fighting'.
Another issue I have (and this goes back as far as original Welsh texts) is him just being an attachment to Kay when Kay's around and nothing else. I haaate when two characters are put in a relationship (platonic or otherwise) and one half of that relationship is sundered into the vague imprint of a person that exists solely to be an accessory to the other. Give him personality! Opinions! Relationships with other characters! He is OOZING with the potential to be interesting! I'm a ride or die for Bedikay (again, platonic or otherwise) but I want both of them to be people!
More to that point. I really, really, really hate it when modern authors just slap his name on another character or otherwise use him to fill a role arbitrarily. I am on my hands and knees begging everyone to just use the original knight for that role or at the very least an OC instead of stretching my guy's skin over a random dude. That isn't my boy! That's a wholly different person who committed identity fraud!
Lastly, and this is completely and totally a taste thing, I don't like it when he's written to be too nice. I personally don't like it when he's the kind, warm, calm, has-his-shit-together voice-of-reason type. That is a perfectly fine way to write the character, and there's nothing wrong with it, I just have a very specific, very neurotic image of the guy. He's in a position of authority in a place full to the brim with violent weirdos where magic bullshit traipses through the front door every other day; I just feel like he should have some bite to him.
That said, him having the self-perception of being or needing to be this magnanimous, rational, dare I say perfect guy, and that just straight up not being the truth at all is something I personally lean into when writing him because it's fun as hell.
Okay, I'm stopping myself before this post gets too long and off-topic. I just really like talking about Bedivere.

🏴 - Okay Now You Can Talk About Orkneys
OKAY! I'm going to go with the G bros for right now!
When I was 13-ish and had only a scant few resources (1 books and some bad movies) I HATED Gawain. And it wasn't because he did anything bad or immoral, it was completely and totally arbitrary. I would skip his dialogue and focus chapters when they came up and I wrote him out of the (really, really bad) fanfiction I had written and THANKFULLY never posted.
Now that I'm an adult I find him very very relatable as I, too, am short AND angry.
Gareth is a legendarily good boy and was initially difficult to write in my silly comedy comics because the obvious jokes you can do with him are the exact same jokes I'd give to Galahad as a naive, too-pure-for-this-world kind of guy. The solution is to just not do the obvious jokes and not play up the extreme goodness angle. Ah well.
Gareth is also fun because he has so many interactions with so many people. It's great! He's the linchpin keeping Camelot together. That's why when he dies everything fucking explodes.
Gaheris.
Agravaine is a character I didn't really give much mind to until recently and now he's like... top 3 Arthurian characters for me. He hits all of the marks for character tropes/archetypes that I eat right up. Chaotic dynamics with a big, fucked up family. Exists in an interesting moral area. Gay. A decent amount of emotional issues...
Also he's a jerk! I love jerks!

So lately, Morgause. Mostly just because I've been thinking about her a lot lately. Really turning her over in the mind gyroscope because I want to use her more often. She has the capacity to be incredibly interesting and nuanced. I think I just lean towards Arthurian characters that have the POTENTIAL to be interesting/funny rather than characters that have actually been used well or often. :'D Suffering!
