“you just want attention, you don’t want my heart.” give me a messy ex ship. where she can’t seem to quit him no matter hard she tries. she finds herself calling, texting & creeping on his life. every time he starts to even think about another girl, she reels him back with loving words & sweet kisses. he’s still in love with her & falls for it each & every time. deep down she knows she’s in love, but has a hard time with commitment. i want the angst of slipping out before he wakes up. the cold shoulder when she knows he’s back in her grasps. him having enough & threatening to cut all ties. her being afraid of losing him. i just need that angst.

more f/f plots because we all need more f/f plots.
after midnight ; muse a works at the local cornerstore as well as being in school to pay for books and keep herself alive, and usually gets stuck working the graveyard shift—which she admits can be kind of amusing considering the people that come in. in particular, she notices muse b, a cute girl who comes in at least every friday to pick up a box of condoms, a bag of candy and painkillers. sometimes they talk and joke, but muse a never hits on her because ‘of course she probably is straight.’ however, after jokingly saying ‘have fun with the boyfriend!’ after ringing muse b up, she’s surprised when muse b turns before leaving, laughing and saying ‘i like girls. cute ones.’ with a wink. cue late night flirting and kissing when there are no customers!
the wire ; muse a and muse b met during their first year of college while trying to join up for a sorority. sparks flew and now in their junior year, they’re a hot couple: usually pictured at all the parties, always hanging onto to each other—they are the envy of most couples on campus seeing as they’re always getting along— but when a new rush season starts and muse a starts to get close to a new pledge, muse b gets jealous and begins acting out of character and starts flirting with other girls—putting a major strain on their seemingly perfect relationship.
who are you ; muse a is one of those girls. the “i’m not like those other girls,” type. who refuses to buy starbucks, wears glasses, reads books, drinks tea, watches dr.who like her life depends on it, and has the typical internal misogyny glued right into her and refuses to change. muse b is one of those girls, and she really doesn’t care. she’ll wear her uggs, makeup and show up to every event with starbucks and instagram her cup because the barista wrote her name cutely that day. they end up working together at a retail place in the mall and muse a can’t stand muse b , that is until muse a is being harassed in the parking lot late at night after her shift by a bunch of guys while waiting for the bus, and muse b shows up out of nowhere and tells them off, driving muse a home while fuming about the boys, all the while checking to make sure muse a is doing okay. in the days following when muse b is driving muse a to and from work, muse a realizes something: she has a major crush on muse b, this preppy girl who swears like a truck driver at boys and smiles like miss america at every girl she passes— the very girl she thought she hated.
falling ; muse a and muse b are finally living out their lives together— a new apartment, stable jobs, and of course each other. as well as one on the way—they’ve decided to go ahead and adopt a three year old girl. things are great for the first couple months— the child is happy, the couple is doing okay, but after a while muse b is having a hard time adjusting to life like this and is having thoughts of leaving, but doesn’t know what to do. instead she draws back from her girlfriend and child, spending time out with friends and coming home drunk, causing for many fights with a very frustrated and confused muse a .

::**CLASSIC LIT PLOTS
It is the three-year anniversary of susierpt! I know, I have no idea how I’ve managed to keep it up and running this long, either. But here we are. You all voted on what you wanted me to do, and the winner was plots inspired by classic literature. Here are 15 bookish plots for 1x1s, inspired by Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Jane Eyre, Rebecca, Wuthering Heights, Carmilla, War and Peace, The Great Gatsby, Little Women, and Dracula. (And yes, I took artistic liberties. Fight me.) Some of these plots are modern, while others would make great historical plots. Here’s to another year of my shitty RPT blog!
Tumblr media
elizabeth and mr. darcy: muse a is the intelligent, strong-willed and bookish middle child of a loud, embarrassing, down-on-their-luck family. when their older sister begins dating a rich guy, muse a meets the guy’s sarcastic, aloof, obscenely wealthy best friend – muse b. it’s hate at first sight for muse a, but muse b is charmed. unfortunately, muse b gets the wrong idea about muse a’s sister, and thinks she’s a gold digger. they take it upon themselves to break the happy couple up, and muse a finds out… right when muse b decides to confess their love to them.
emma and mr. knightley: muse a and muse b have been friends ever since they were kids. now, they’re coworkers, working at muse a’s successful lifestyle youtube channel. muse a makes the content, posting videos about makeovers, dating advice, and “living your best life,” while muse b handles the financial and business side of things. when one of muse a’s attempted makeover/matchmakings backfires horrifically, muse a is left scrambling to clean up the mess they’ve made, enlisting the semi-unwilling help of muse b, who is… tired. so very tired.
emma and harriet: muse a is a popular, feminine sorority girl that would put elle woods to shame. she grew up in a wealthy family, and while her parents brought her up right, she’s still a bit spoiled and frivolous. muse b is a new pledge in the sorority, there on a scholarship. she’s pretty enough, but has never had money for nice things, and is a bit on the shy side. muse a thinks muse b is simply darling, and decides to take her under her wing, giving her a makeover, buying her some new clothes, helping her navigate greek life, and promising to help her find a boyfriend. except, as the girls become closer and closer friends, muse a pushes away all the male attention muse b has begun to attract. muse b deserves only the best, she says, and so far, none of the guys on their campus have been good enough. until, suddenly, it hits her: the reason she’s been telling muse b not to go out with these guys is because muse a sort of hopes she’d go out with her instead.
jane and mr. rochester: muse a is a wealthy single parent who’s known for being distant, sarcastic, moody, and just plain difficult to be with. despite their many flaws, though, they do love their child and want the best for them. so, upon realizing their child isn’t being challenged enough in school, they decide to hire a live-in tutor, and land upon muse b. muse b is shy, with a poor relationship with their family, and this is their first job since graduating college, but they get on well with muse a’s child, and care deeply for them. after moving into the estate and beginning to teach. despite their differences, and the fact that muse a is rarely around, the two do sort of get along when they’re together – but muse b is uneasy. the house is creepy, and they’ve begun receiving threatening notes and phone calls. when they finally go to muse a with what’s been happening, muse a confesses that they’ve gotten threats, too, and they suspect their ex-spouse (and parent of their child). according to muse a, their ex was always jealous and often unpredictable, and that seeing muse b move into their house and (in their mind) take their place as muse a’s partner and parent to their child might have set them off. before the two can decide on whether to go to the police or handle the threats on their own, muse a’s suspicions are confirmed…. when their ex sets the estate on fire.
mr. and mrs. de winter: muse a is a recently widowed, semi-famous millionaire, on vacation at an upscale resort where muse b works. muse b is told not to bothered muse a; after all, muse a is certainly still grieving losing their spouse in an accident, and would never be interested in someone as plain and unassuming as muse b. except, surprise – they are. the two have a whirlwind courtship over the course of a few weeks, and when muse a has to return home, they stun everyone by suggesting muse b move back with them… and proposing. muse b stuns everyone even further by accepting. muse b tries to settle into their new life, but it’s harder than expected. they and muse a are vastly different people, and muse b is unused to having money, not to mention a household to manage – but, since muse a is the one who’s out working, managing the household is muse b’s function. to make matters worse, everyone who works there still sings praises of muse a’s deceased spouse, and no one thinks muse b can measure up. not helping is that muse a, while often loving and sometimes even affectionate, can be unexpectedly moody and distant. but what muse b doesn’t know is that muse a’s erratic mood stems not from losing their spouse, but from the fact that their spouse was not the saint everyone remembers… and their death wasn’t an accident.
cathy and heathcliffe: muse a and muse b dated when they were young, and it was a total disaster. muse a, coming from a wealthy family, is selfish, spoiled, and arrogant, and muse b, coming from a low-income background, is bitter, self-conscious, and jealous. despite their constant fighting and the toxic nature of the relationship, the two considered themselves soulmates. muse a’s family never approved of muse b, and essentially ordered muse a to terminate the relationship – which they did. muse b, enraged and heartbroken, left town, only to resurface some years later. in the time since they saw each other last, muse a married somebody else, and muse b acquired a vast fortune. now, muse b has a mission: utterly destroy and ruin the lives of everyone who made them feel less-than, including muse a.
carmilla and laura: muse a is a wealthy, lonely young woman who lives in a vast estate in the secluded countryside. she has no friends her own age, and the only people she ever sees are her father and the staff working at the house. one night, there’s an accident on the road just outside the grounds, and among the wreckage is muse b, a young woman about muse a’s age. muse b is sickly and appears to be badly injured, and muse a’s father quickly brings her inside to recover. the family doctor says that muse b is in no state to travel long distances, and muse a suggests that muse b stays at the estate until she’s feeling strong again, which she accepts. muse a is thrilled, having never had a companion before, and this enables her to overlook some… peculiarities about her new friend. muse b avoids answering questions about her past, and muse a eventually sees an old painting that is muse b’s spitting image. on top of that, muse a starts having terrifying nightmares, and as muse b grows stronger, muse a grows weaker, becoming sick and fragile. and there are ever-growing rumors of people being attacked by a mysterious monster in the neighboring town. because muse b has a secret: she’s not just a peculiar girl, and in fact, isn’t human at all. in fact, she’s a vampire, and has been stealing into muse a’s room at night to feed. complicating matters even further is that, although she initially viewed muse a as a source of food, her feelings have grown from indifference to genuine friendship, to what might even be love.
natasha and pierre: muse a and muse b are two opposites in deeply unhappy situations. the normally cheerful and frivolous muse a has recently had their reputation ruined by a scandal, and the backlash they’ve suffered has left them a shell of their former self. muse b, meanwhile, is a melancholy intellectual with a drinking problem, trapped in an unhappy marriage. despite their differing personalities, the two have common friends, and muse b has attempted to comfort muse a and help them through this difficult time. as the two spend more time together and become closer, muse b realizes; they’re in love with muse a.
natasha and anatole: muse a is engaged, and their fiance is off at war. while muse a waits, they meet muse b – a charming, fun-loving, ne’er-do-well. despite their love and loyalty to their fiance, muse a can’t help but be drawn to muse b. muse b, for their part, is convinced they’re in love with muse a (in reality, they’re probably more in love with love than anything), and tries to persuade muse a to run away with them. finally, despite the damage it will cause to their relationships and reputation, they do – but soon after they leave, muse a discovers that muse b has a spouse they never mentioned.
daisy and gatsby: muse a is a wealthy, naive, somewhat spoiled heir, who meets muse b one summer. muse b is poor and set to ship off to war in a few months, but the two spend the whole summer dating, and fall deeply in love. muse a promises to wait for muse b, but while muse b is deployed, muse a’s parents force them to marry someone wealthy. when muse b comes home and finds out what happened, they decide that the only way to win muse a back is to become rich themselves – no matter what it takes. five years later, muse b is now far richer than muse a’s new spouse could ever hope to be… thanks to a massive drug empire. but muse a can’t just up and leave their spouse; as they inform muse b, there’s going to be a child involved soon.
nick and gatsby: muse a is a new resident in an absurdly wealthy neighborhood, and muse b is their absurdly wealthy next-door neighbor. muse b is known for having massive parties nearly every weekend, but very little is known about them as a person. a good neighbor, however, they extend an invitation to muse a, and one weekend, they decide to go. at the party, they hear different, wildly conflicting stories about muse b and what kind of person they are. in the estate’s massive library, they relate these stories to a stranger they meet – who then reveals themselves to be muse b. muse a is embarrassed, but muse b takes it in good humor, and the two become close friends. over the next months, muse a begins to realize not all is what it seems with their new friend. not only does muse b have a messy romantic history, but the way they got all their money is… not exactly legal.
jo and laurie: just a simple, cute plot where muse a and muse b are childhood friends and spend their summers chilling out in the woods and messing around. muse a is adventurous and strong-willed, while muse b is shyer and totally heart eyes over them. not that muse a notices.
jo and prof. baher: muse a is an aspiring writer, living in a run-down apartment complex until they get their big break. muse b is newly arrived in the country, having left behind a prestigious career as a professor, and is now trying to reestablish themselves, living in the same apartment complex as muse a. upon finding out muse b is a professor, muse a seeks their help in editing their work, to which muse b agrees. as the two work on muse a’s novel and try to get it ready for publication, the two become very close friends… and maybe more?
jonathan and mina: muse a and muse b are a married couple, living in a small town that has a bit of a monster problem. be it vampires, demons, or whatever else you can imagine, people have been dying left and right – including muse a’s close friend. so when muse b is picked to be part of a small group to go hunt the monsters and put an end to this once and for all, muse a is like, “i’m going with you.” “no no it’s too dangerous, you need to stay and–” “i said i’m FUCKING going with you.”
mina and lucy: muse a is a wealthy, popular young woman with many suitors, and muse b is her clever, more tomboyish best friend. when their town is plagued by a vampire, muse a finds that she’s become a target, and the creature takes her from her home one night. muse a manages to escape, but she’s already been bitten and is becoming a vampire herself. too afraid of what’s happening to go home, she hides, trying to manage her new abilities and hunger. what will happen when muse b, who has been worried sick about her friend, finds her weeks later?

A LIST OF PLOTLESS TOWN RP-FRIENDLY CHARACTER IDEAS & CONNECTIONS INSPIRED BY MOVIES! (PART 1)
i collected a couple of plot ideas from some of the movies i thought had interesting stories or characters that i hope can help you with your applications / character connections. please note that a lot of these are, by no means, the actual plots of the films and are only inspired by them. i’ve taken the liberty of making a couple of edits for them to be ‘plotless town rp-friendly’. also, i would’ve separated them by category (platonic, romantic, familial, etc.) but tbh a lot of these can be taken in any way so feel free to put your own spin on them, too, or even make combinations!
trigger warnings: nothing too specific, but there are light mentions of death, road accident, infidelity, illness, injury, drug addiction.
now, without further ado:

hi here’s a bunch of plot ideas based off of LA.NY songs i love click song titles for the song to get the vibe <3 ( sorry that there’s a lot, or it might be repetitive, but they’ve been stuck in my head for a while, so i just kinda wanna chuck them down )
ex i never had we hung out a few times, you stayed over my house a few times, but we never hung out with the intention of you staying over. after a few months we grew apart and stopped talking. i run into a mutual friend, and i find out you’ve been saying rude stuff, like i ghosted you during our relationship and i used you? i wasn’t even aware we were dating. it was never real enough for you to be mad, so why you out there acting like the ex i never had?
mean it i really like you. and you know that. but you’re in an on-again off-again relationship with someone else. i’m sick of pulled back and forth - one minute you need me, the next minute you don’t because you have them. i’m putting my foot down - unless you are fully mine, as much as it hurts, i don’t want your love and affection. don’t kiss me right now, don’t tell me that you need me, don’t show up at my house, all caught up in your feelings
valentine’s day we broke up finally. it was an explosive break up, that ended with you walking out. i think time has finally healed my heart, and i’ve moved on to someone else. it’s a not a relationship - yet. it’s just lust at this point of time, but i don’t mind. but at the same time…they’re not the same. they don’t compare to you. you’re still in my mind and my heart. i kissed her hips to find some help, but i know it’s not the truth, no matter what i tell myself, she’s not as good, she’s not as good, she’s not as good as you
if you see her we always said we were going to be together forever. you made me promise i would never leave, you said we were for life. but all of a sudden, you’ve up and left, saying you don’t love me any more. i don’t know where this came from. you never showed an inkling of wanting to leave, and now you won’t even talk to me. i don’t want you in my life any more - but please, tell me you love me, i want to see you again. if you see her, tell her i’ll do anything i need her, i know i’m not perfect but we were, she says she doesn’t love me, don’t believe her
hericane you’ve been hurt in the past, but that’s in the past. we’re together now, and i would never do that. and you know that, right? …right? you accuse me of cheating all the time, you don’t believe me when i say i love you and only you. you do something outrageous - like look through my phone when i’m in the shower, etc, and i confront you, and you get defensive. you justify your actions, even though they’re unfounded. you deny all responsibility for your behaviour - will this hurricane tear us apart? caught in the midst of your insecure winds, breaking us down, wearing us thin, but i love you still, i always will, but you’re the one in the wrong
hurts i’ve never loved, not like this. i didn’t realise the perfect relationship would hurt so much. the thought of losing you, every little fight ( insignificant disagreement or not ), it just hurts to upset you at all. it never bothered me in other relationships, but maybe i’m just more attached to you than i was. now that i’m in danger of losing you, it hurts so much more than i thought. please tell me why, it’s easy at first, and then it all breaks, the more you love the more it hurts
super far i love you. i honestly do. but…do you love me? i don’t think you do. and this relationship is starting to wear me down, tear me down, and i don’t think i can continue it any longer. can you give me a reason to stay? i’m willing to try. but at this moment…i don’t want to admit it, but i don’t think i’m happy in this relationship. got me begging for affection all you do is roll your eyes, broken down, i’ve had enough, if this is love, i don’t want it
i die first you put me down in front of our friends, you criticise me all the time. our relationship is so tiring - you even call me when you’re with someone else, just so i can hear them on the other side and know you’re with them, and not in our bed with me. i know it’s toxic…but i can’t live without you. i still love you, despite all this. i guess no matter how far, it wouldn’t ever add up to a life without you, i don’t wanna know, baby, don’t go, make sure i die first
up to me i think i’m falling in love with someone new. but whenever i’m with them, i think of you. we do all these fancy things now, but i miss doing the simple dates with you - like making ramen at the corner store, or shutting down the cheap bars together. but we broke up because you weren’t ready, or you were working on yourself. i really miss you, do you miss me too? if it was up to me, you would still, still be mine, but it wasn’t up to me, up to me
heart won’t let me we have a tumultuous relationship. we’re always fighting. we no longer say ‘i love you’, all our conversations are apologies. but no matter how bad it gets…i can never leave. i keep trying to leave, but my heart won’t let me leave for good. can we save this relationship? say i’m gonna go, can’t take it anymore, keys are in my hand, got one foot out the door, every time i try, every time i try to leave, my heart won’t let me
sad we broke up and god - you’re flourishing without me. i’m so happy to see you doing well, but i’m also jealous. you’re with someone else, but i wish you were still with me. so i start going out with your friends, i pretend like i don’t miss you. but it hurts to know you’re happy without me, and i wish i could make you jealous too. so i stay out late with all your friends, and i get so drunk that i pretend that i don’t miss all the things that we had, cause i heard you found somebody else, and it breaks my heart and hurts like hell, cause i know that i will never get you back, wish that i could make you, sad

midnights plot ideas
in honor of dr. swift's latest drop, here are *13* plot ideas based off midnights - 3 a.m. edition. there are some common themes from this album (imo) like learning to love again after heartache, maturing in relationships, wondering "what if?", and manipulating people & situations for better or worse. message me if you'd like to try any of these plots & feel free to reblog.
Tumblr media
lavender haze: muse a has always put relationships and domesticity on the backburner, feeling torn between wanting a life partner and wanting to retain their own sense of self. muse b has always loved freely and never felt that happiness and connection were mutually exclusive. when they end up together, muse a has to figure out how to not get caught up in societal labels, timelines, and expectations - while muse b never had any expectations to begin with.
maroon: muse a and muse b met when life seemed simpler - shitty apartments & cheap wine in overcrowded big city apartments. it felt inevitable & easy falling in love then. but when muse a leaves the city & muse b can't (won't?) follow, it's time to see if their connection can survive distance, timing, sobriety, growing up, real life.
you're on your own kid: coming of age in the same small town, it seemed like muse a would always be around, so muse b never thought twice about getting around to finally acting on the simmering hot & cold connection they'd harbored for years. but muse a is getting older now, finding their footing in the world, and no longer content with always coming in last. will muse b ever get it together, or will they get left behind like their hometown?
midnight rain: the golden retriever/black cat trope. muse and muse b were so different, but they always said opposites attract, right? that is, until muse a got it in their mind to propose & muse b said... no. (champagne problems?..) just like that, it was over. and now muse b gets to watch muse a move on - new spouse, new life, and they try to believe they made the right choice all those years ago, but do the "what ifs" keep muse a up at night, too?
question...?: muse a and muse b had one chaotic, silly, perfect night together. for muse a, it felt like they'd finally made it out of the friendzone, like it was really the start of something. but then muse a learned that muse b had a partner all along, and maybe that night didn't mean to muse b what it meant to muse a after all, though they've never actually talked about it.
bejeweled: muse and muse b have been together for awhile now. they've traded the honeymoon phase and butterflies for contentment and routine. but muse a is getting a little too comfortable, and muse b feels forgotten and unappreciated, unsure if they can ever get back to that initial spark. maybe muse a just needs to be reminded of what they have - that muse b has options and can still command attention.
sweet nothing: after years of heartache & insecurity & betrayal, what muse a and muse b have found feels like home & safety & peace. it's the kind of connection that defies definition and makes no sense to the rest of the world and becomes the one thing muse a and b would do anything to defend. it's sacred.
mastermind: muse a and muse b are the ultimate "meet cute" success story. everyone says so. except that it wasn't divine coincidence after all - muse a had their sights on muse b for a long time, planned it all out in painstaking detail, and didn't give up until they could call muse b theirs. and the best part? muse b knew all along - let it happen - because they wanted it just as much.
high infidelity: muse a didn't realize that none of it - the house, the marriage, the picket fence - wasn't what they wanted until it was too late. or was it? now muse a is dipping dangerously into cheating territory and muse b is growing increasingly resentful as the gulf between them grows and grows.
glitch: muse a and b met and quickly became best friends, understanding each other in a way they hadn't found with anyone else. and muse b even became a sounding board for muse a's disastrous dating life horror stories. it worked because muse b was so totally not muse a's type. except one day, it's like a switch flipped & muse b is all muse a can think about, all they want. but how do they explain that to muse b, who so clearly wants to be just friends & has had to listen to all of muse a's flaws and failures?
would've, could've, should've: would it all have been different if muse a and muse b never met? could all the heartache have been spared? and if they could go back, would they even choose to do anything differently? because for all the tears and ghosts of memories and hitting each other where it hurts, there was no other love quite like it.

This is a quick post of free resources that may help fandom creators (or creators in general). I’m sure many of these have been shared before. However, it doesn’t hurt to spread the word. A few quick points:
As a professional writer, I think this post will cater mostly towards writers.
I’m also a freelance photographer, so digital photography/editing/art sources are included, too.
I chose not to use any affiliate links in my post. I don’t want to profit from this, and I’m not sure that’s allowed on Tumblr anyways.
If I’ve listed a resource I haven’t used myself, I’ve made sure to state it.
Masterlists and/or huge resource compilations are marked with asterisks.
Alright, here we go! I hope you all find this post helpful. Happy writing/creating!
Tumblr media
Research
All of these are free resources for research. I use most of them for my writing jobs because they are extremely credible. These are great for making accurate references in your fics/creations.
1. ***Research Resources For Writers***
Writer’s Write has an enormous database of research resources for writers. They are divided into 20+ categories such as:
careers
historical research
crimes and forensics
religion
Each category contains 10+ resources like websites, articles, tips, databases, and so much more. It’s the most comprehensive and organized free research tool I use.
2. PubMed
My go-to source for citing medical studies. You’ll find 30 million citations related to numerous physical and mental health issues.
3. BioMed Central
I don’t use this website as often, but I keep it in my bookmarks. It’s similar to PubMed - great for discovering current and former medical research.
4. Drugs.com
If you need to name a medication and/or refer to medication side effects, Drugs.com is a straightforward resource. It’s easy to navigate and understand.
It also has a tool that lists potential medication interactions. This is really useful for accurate descriptions of med combinations.
5. Merck Manuals Consumer Version
Merck Manuals started out in 1899 as a medical reference guide for professionals. This consumer version is really comprehensive and updated regularly. It includes definitions, studies, and more.
6. FindLaw
If you’re writing about legal topics, FindLaw is useful for learning about laws/procedures in reader-friendly language. Categories include:
accidents/injuries
criminal law
family law (divorce, custody, etc.)
Keep in mind that laws vary based on location! You’ll often find additional links to state-related laws within articles. I do recommend double-checking state/location-based legal resources for accuracy.
7. APA Dictionary of Psychology
This psychology dictionary is provided by the American Psychological Association. It covers 90+ areas of psychology and 25,000+ terms/definitions.
You’ll also find links to additional psychology databases, resources, and so on. The website is updated frequently to provide updated information.
8. U.S. Bureau Of Labor Statistics
If you’re writing about a character’s job/career in the United States, this is a great source for accuracy. For any job sector, you’ll find details about
education requirements
positions in the sector
average salary for positions
what the positions entail
I imagine there are alternatives for other countries, too!
9. Investopedia Financial Term Dictionary
My area of expertise is personal finance; all of my writing published under my name is in this niche. I still refer to Investopedia’s dictionary for help. It’s excellent for understanding/explaining financial terms in a way that your reader can understand.
10. MedTerms Medical Dictionary
This is the medical version of Investopedia’s dictionary. I use this source less frequently, but I find that it’s accurate and helpful. There are many similar references online if you search for “medical glossaries” or “medical dictionaries”.
11. Domain Authority Checker
I’m not sure if this one is too helpful for fic writers, but it’s one of my most used tools. Domain authority “a search engine ranking score developed by Moz that predicts how likely a website is to rank on search engine result pages (SERPs)”.
The Wikipedia page for domain authority (DA) explains it clearly and simply. To sum it up, websites with good DA scores are considered reliable and accurate. If I cite sources in my work. I always link to sources with good DA scores.

Writing/Editing
This section is the most thorough one. All of these are completely free tools for writing and editing any type of content. I currently use or have used all of these at some point in my career.
1. ***List Of Free And Open-Source Software Packages***
This Wikipedia page applies to multiple categories in my post. It’s a masterpost of free and open-source software for anything and everything. Software is divided up into categories and sub-categories. Some relevant examples include:
media
networking/Internet
image editing
file management
There are hundreds of free software links on the page, so you’ll need to do a bit of browsing. Start with the categories above to find software geared towards writers/creators.
2. OpenOffice
This is a free alternative to Microsoft Office. I’ve used it for nine years and love it. OpenOffice software includes free applications for:
text documents
spreadsheets
presentations
drawing
templates
There are many more tools with OpenOffice that I haven’t used. If you write offline, I cannot recommend it enough. Tutorials are readily available online, and the software is pretty user-friendly.
3. Evernote
I briefly used Evernote and found that it’s very user-friendly and helpful. Most of my colleagues use Evernote and recommend it for taking notes/staying organized.
(I’m personally not a fan of note-taking software or apps. My method is messy text documents with bullet point lists.)
4. Google Drive
This might seem like an obvious one, but Google Drive/Docs is my writing haven. It has the tools included with Microsoft Office and OpenOffice and then some. It’s great for collaborative writing/sharing documents, too.
5. Grammarly
I use the Premium (paid) version of Grammarly, but I also used the free version for years. It’s helpful for detecting simple spelling, style, and grammatical errors.
There are numerous ways to use it - desktop, copy/paste documents, and so on. I’m not a huge fan of how well it works with Google Docs, but they’re improving it/it’s moved out of beta mode.
If you’re interested in the paid version - which I highly recommend -  wait to buy until a holiday pops up. They offer a major discount on the software for almost every holiday/special occasion.
6. Plagiarism Detector
This website is handy for scanning for plagiarism. You can scan your own work to ensure uniqueness, too. My clients are big fans of this tool.
(I no longer use this resource; I use a paid tool called Copyscape Premium. The low cost has a big return on investment for me.)
7. TitleCase
The name says it all. It’s free and simple! I’ll be honest - I’m terrible with proper title case. You’d think after a decade of writing I’d nail it. However, I use this tool pretty often.
8. Hemingway Editor
Hemingway Editor is an online and desktop editor. It’s excellent for scanning your writing to check for:
readability (a grade-level score is listed)
adverb usage
passive voice usage
complex phrase usage
estimated reading time
This tool is color-coded to make editing easy. For example, adverbs are highlighted in blue. I don’t use this as often as I used to, but it was essential for my early writing career.
9. Polish My Writing
This tool is very straightforward. You paste your writing into the text box. Spelling errors, grammar suggestions, and style suggestions are highlighted in red, blue, and green.
It’s great for double-checking your work alongside Grammarly or Hemingway. When using free editors, I recommend using at least two for higher accuracy.
10. OneLook Reverse Dictionary And Thesaurus
I’m going to use the definition directly from the website:
“This tool lets you describe a concept and get back a list of words and phrases related to that concept. Your description can be anything at all: a single word, a few words, or even a whole sentence. Type in your description and hit Enter (or select a word that shows up in the autocomplete preview) to see the related words.”
To put it simply, you can use the reverse dictionary/thesaurus to find those words/thoughts that are on the tip of your tongue. Use the tool to:
find a word based on the word’s definition (i.e. search for “inability to feel pain”)
find synonyms and related concepts
generate a list of category-specific words (i.e. search for “cat breeds”)
answer basic questions (i.e. search for “what is the capital of France?”)
The results can be hit or miss, but I usually find the information I’m looking for. It’s a solid resource any writer regardless of genre.
11. Word Frequency Counter +  Phrase Frequency Counter
I cannot emphasize how much I love these tools. Repetition is the bane of a writer’s existence; it’s simply inevitable at times.
These two tools count the number of times you use a single word or phrase in a text document. Just copy/paste your document, hit submit, and you’re all set!
For the phrase frequency counter, you can scan for two-word to ten-word phrases.
12. Thesaurus.com
This is another tool that might seem painfully obvious. Combined with the word frequency counter, it’s such an essential resource for me.
It’s especially useful if you’re writing about the same topic multiple times (i.e. love, getting drunk, sex, etc.). I always use this combo of tools to ensure uniqueness.
13. Lists Of Colors
Are you stumped when trying to come up with unique shades of blue? Is describing your character’s hair or skin color difficult? This Wikipedia page has you covered. It contains:
lists of colors (alphabetically)
lists of colors by shade
lists of Crayola crayon colors
lists of color palettes
I typically use this resource for product descriptions, but I also used it for creative writing many times. It’s a lifesaver for all things color-related.

Free Photos/Images
Tons of creators need free photos/images for numerous reasons. All of these sources provide 100% free photos, illustrations, etc. that have a Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license. This means there’s no copyright whatsoever on them.
You can edit the images however you’d like, too. All of the images in my post are from the first source listed below. I made them black and white and added text.
(A lot of these sites have donate buttons for contributors. Donating a dollar here and there goes a long way!)
1. Unsplash
Unsplash is my personal favorite for high-resolution photos. It’s easy to navigate and has over 2,000,000 free images. Downloading an image is a one-click process, and you don’t need to create an account.
2. Pixabay
Pixabay is my go-to site for illustrations and vector graphics (they have photos, too). There are 1.9 million free images to choose from. You don’t need an account to download images, but I recommend creating one. It’s free and with an account:
you don’t have to complete a CAPTCHA every time you download an image
you can access higher-quality/larger/etc. versions of images
I often use graphics from Pixabay to create overlays and masks for mixed media art pieces.
3. PxHere
I’ve never used PxHere, but one of my writing clients recommends it. It seems very similar to Pixabay, and the interface is user-friendly.
4. Pexels
In my limited experience, Pexels seems to focus on “artsy” stock images/content. I found great high-quality images the few times I’ve used it.
5. Burst by Shopify
I haven’t used Burst, but it’s another free image site that a writing client recommended to me. It seems a little limited compared to the other sites, but it never hurts to add it to your toolbox!

Digital Art/Photo Editing/Etc.
This section seems brief, but the tools listed are pretty comprehensive and diverse. They are geared towards many creative needs/projects like:
Creating manips of people/etc.
Adding text to images.
Creating collages.
Digital illustration.
Advanced photo editing.
There’s something for everyone. In my experience, finding your favorites among these will take some trial and error.
1. Pixlr X and Pixlr E (app available)
Pixlr X and Pixlr E are both versatile free editing tools. Pixlr X is ideal for less experienced creators. Pixlr E is comparable to Adobe PhotoShop.
I’ve used both software formats for personal and professional art projects.
The Pixlr app is handy for making collages, adding filters/overlays, adding text, and so on. I’ve used it for creating fanfiction collages and similar projects. It’s super easy to use.
2. Remove Background by Pixlr
This is one of the easiest/fastest tools I’ve found for removing backgrounds from images. It’s perfect for creators who make manips using photos of people.
It takes literal seconds to use. The tool automatically removes the background. If you spot any mistakes, you can refine the results with brush/erase tools. Then you download the cutout and you’re all set!
Unfortunately, this feature isn’t available on the Pixlr app. There are a lot of smartphone apps for removing photo backgrounds.
3. GIMP
If you need a full-fledged Photoshop alternative, GIMP is excellent software.  It’s not an online tool like most I’ve suggested; you’ll need to download it to your computer.
There’s quite a learning curve for it, unless you’re familiar with Photoshop already. Fortunately, the free video/text GIMP tutorials online are endless. I no longer use/need GIMP, but it’s a personal favorite of mine.
4. Paint.NET
Admittedly, I haven’t used Paint.NET, but my art/photography colleagues commonly mention it. It’s comparable to Photoshop and GIMP. It’s a web-based tool, and a quick Google search returns several tutorials for it.
5. Photopea
This is more or less a Photoshop clone, but it’s free and web-based. If you watch Photoshop tutorials, you can usually follow the same steps in PhotoPea.
I’ve only used it a few times; I have Photoshop so I don’t need it. Still, it’s very impressive - especially for a free tool.
6. PicsArt (app available)
PicsArt is a photo editing website and app; the app is much easier to use in my opinion. It’s a “fun” editing tool for photo manips, collages, and fan art in general. A lot of users post their art in the app, and I’ve noticed tons of cool fandom edits.
Some of the features are Premium (AKA cost money), but I don’t think they’re worth the extra cost. PicsArt also has a digital drawing app. I haven’t personally used it but it may be worth checking out!
7. Adobe Photoshop Express (app available)
(I’ll preface this by saying I have an Adobe subscription, so I have access to the “locked” features. I’ve used the free versions, but my memory of it is a bit hazy.)
Photoshop Express is a free web-based tool and smartphone app. The app is very user-friendly and can be used for detailed editing, adding filters, adding text, and so on.
I’m less familiar with the browser version; I only use it for the cutout tool when I’m feeling lazy. It seems to be a good fit for quick edits - filters, cropping, and so on.
8. Make PNG Transparent by Online PNG Tools
This tool is awesome for removing solid colored backgrounds. I use it to create graphics for mixed media art pieces. Here’s how it works:
upload an image
type the color your want to remove (name or hex code)
type the percentage of similar color tones you want to match (for example, 25% will remove your chosen color plus similar warm/cool tones)
the removed color is replaced with transparent pixels
If you want to make a JPG transparent, start with the website’s JPG to PNG Converter. There are a ton of useful free tools offered, but I haven’t tried out most of the others.
Wrap Up
That’s all I’ve got for now! If I think of additional free tools, I’ll add them to this post. Feel free to reblog with your own recommendations or message me if you’d like me to add anything.
I hope my fellow creatives find these too

Iconsax icons by vuesax
ICONSAX is an abundant library consisting of over 900 SVG uicons with soft corners. I went through all of them and wrote a lightweight script that allows you to add any icon with just one line of HTML. I’ve also curated a complete icon cheatsheet so you can search for any icons you want to use, and preview them before adding them to your project.

400+ Free Line Icons by Ahmed Agrma
A library containing almost 500 icons in a cute, minimal style. I whipped up a script that allows you to add any icon to your project with just one line of HTML like an icon font, rather than the full SVG code. I’ve also created an accompanying icon cheatsheet so you can quickly preview/browse for anything specific before using it!
