~(이)야 grammar explanation
i found this grammar point i had never seen before so i’ll write an explanation.
the suffix ~이야 (or only 야 if the word ends in a vowel), can be added to nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, and it basically just serves to emphasize the word it’s connected to. it has a meaning like “the speaker definitely thinks of the noun in a certain way, but not of others”.
note: with verbs and adjectives, you first write the verb in ~기 form, and then add 야. so (verb stem) + (기) + (야).
the sentence i found it in:
심청의 나이가 열 다섯 살 되던 해, 하루는 남의 집 일을 도와 주러 갔다가, 늦게야 집으로 돌아오게 되었다. (emphasizing that Shim Cheong got home late)
other examples:
배드민턴이야 재미있으니까 모두 좋아하겠지요. (of course badminton is fun, so everyone will like to play)
김치야 가장 유명한 한국 음식 중 하나니까, 외국 사람들이 모를 리 없지. (kimchi is of course one of the most well-known Korean food, so there’s no way foreign people don’t know about it)
피자를 먹고 싶기야 하지만 다이어트 중이라 안 돼요. (i do want to eat pizza, but I can’t because I’m on a diet)
장미가 예쁘기야 한데, 너무 흔해요. (roses are pretty, but they are too ordinary)
파티에 가기야 하겠지. 근데 내일 시험이 있어서 오래 못 있을 거야. (i will go to the party. But I won’t be able to stay there long because I have an exam tomorrow)

I learn languages to remind myself that beauty exists in the world. That there are an infinite number of ideas, abstractions, realities, that can be expressed in an infinite number of ways. To remind myself that even when I feel small, finite, lost, there are doors waiting to opened, people waiting to be met. I challenge myself to enrich my soul with the languages I speak; to shape my brain in completely different ways, to fill my heart with a pleasant weight of so many desires and hopes and emotions. I am the languages I want to learn, no matter how many speakers speak the language, no matter where the language is spoken, where I have an aspiration, I set a destination. And, how silly, the destination is not fluency. No, it is not to be able to speak about whatever whenever. No, it is not to be able to cross the language off of a list. It is to hold the entire process of acquisition in my hands; to form each foreign word with the mouth and the muscles given to me, to write each new word with grace and peace. Words. So arbitrary, so raw. So contextual, yet so free. I learn languages to remind myself that even something so intangible as the spoken word, resonates with the same passion, the same fire, as is within me.

한국어로 오늘은 좋아하는 음식에 대해 포스트를 만들게요. 여러분의 제일 좋아하는 음식이 뭐예요? 저는 타코야끼예요. 타코야끼는 일본의 먹거리다. 문어, 양배추, 그리고 파를 밀가루 반죽에 넣고 동그란 모양으로 만들어요. 위에는 가쓰오부시와 소스를 뿌려요.
길거리 음식이니까 제가 일본에서 축제에 갔을 때 자주 먹었어요. 타코야끼를 먹을 때 행복했던 시절이 생각나요. 집에서 만들어보고 싶었는데, 타코야끼틀이 없고 너무 비싸서 축제에 갈 때만 먹을 수 있어요. 제 생각에는 문어가 제일 맛있는 고기니까 문어가 있는 음식이 다 좋아해요. 하지만 브라질 사람들은 문어를 거의 먹지 않아서 찾기 어려워요.

설빔 / korean new year’s dress
‘설빔”에 대해서 알아보도록 하겠습니다! 설빔은 새해를 맞이하여 설날 아침에 새것으로 갈아 입는 옷이다.
설날부터 새해가 시작되기 때문에 묵은 것은 다 떨구어버리고 새 출발을 하는 데 의미가 있고, 또 설의 명절을 맞아 새해를 맞이하는 기쁨이 있어 새옷으로 갈아 입는다.
설빔을 마련하기 위해서 주부는 밤을 새워 옷감을 짜고 바느질을 해서 섣달그믐께에는 모든 준비를 끝낸다. 설날 아침 차례를 지내기 위해서 일찍 일어나는데 새옷 설빔으로 갈아 입게 된다.
어른에게는 바지·저고리·두루마기를 하고 어린아이에게는 색깔이 있는 화사한 것으로 하며, 특히 부녀자의 치마저고리는 화려한 것으로 하여 호사를 한다.
버선·대님도 새것으로 한다. 어린 시절의 추억에 설날 설빔이 남아 있는 것은 설빔에 기대를 걸었고 또 화려한 설빔으로 모양을 내고 화사한 것을 서로 자랑하기도 했기 때문이다. 설빔의 풍속은 오늘날에도 전승되어 설날에는 한복으로 차려입고 세배하고 나들이하는 풍속을 볼 수가 있다.

설날 / lunar new year 🧧
설날은 한 해의 첫 날을 기리는 명절이다. 음력 1월 1일 설날은 추석과 함께 대한민국 최대의 명절 중 하나이자 전날과 다음 날을 포함한 3일이 법정 공휴일이다. 태음력에서 역법 전체의 기준이 되는 달은 동지가 든 달이다.
공식적으로 음력 1월이 정월이 되고, 음력 1월 1일이 설날이 된 것은 2000년이 넘는 역사를 자랑한다. 부여 시절부터 설날의 풍습이 있었을 것으로 보인다. 구체적인 설날의 풍습에 대한 기록은 신라시대에 전해지는데 수서에 의하면 신라인들은 원일, 즉 새해 첫날에 서로 문안을 드리고 왕이 성대한 잔치를 베풀어 군신들을 격려하며 일월신에게 제사를 지냈다고 기록되어 있다.
설날에는 다양한 풍습들이 있었는데 차례, 세배, 떡국, 설빔(새옷), 덕담, 문안비, 설그림, 복조리 걸기, 야광귀 쫓기, 청참, 윷놀이, 널뛰기 등이 그것이다. 성년이 되지 않은 아이들이 어른들께 세배를 올리고 세뱃돈을 받는 풍속이 있기 때문에 어른들보단 아이들이 더 손꼽아 이 날을 기다리기도 한다. 원래는 떡과 과일 같은 간식들을 내오는 게 보통이었지만 시대가 흐르면서 돈을 주는 걸로 바뀌게 된 결과라고 할 수 있다.

Korean learning tip
Knowing how to use something is better than knowing it’s definition. Knowing where to add a particle or when use a particular word is more important than being able to explain or fully understand that word/particle. In our native languages, there are plenty of words and grammar concepts that we couldn’t fully explain if someone asked us to, but we use them constantly. Learning in context is very important - knowing the exact definition of a word won’t help you know when to use it in a sentence for the first time; but constantly hearing/seeing that word used in real sentences will gradually give you the ability to use it in your own sentences. Your thought process will end up becoming like this: “ah no I won’t use that word here because it doesn’t feel right and I’ve never heard it used that way before - I think I’ll use this word instead”. Learn to feel the structure and nuance of Korean by getting familiar with super common sentences/phrases rather than trying to memorise whole vocab lists, as the words are not just building blocks that you string together to make a sentence.

요즘 이런 ‘일기’ 같은 포스트를 쓰기 시작할까 한다. 이제 내가 한국말 잘 알아듣고 책이�� 만화를 읽는 때 주로 이해하지만 이런 포스트를 쓰는 때에는 너무 서투르고 틀린 것이 많다. 말하는 것은 전혀 못 한다. 말해보는 적도 없고, 그러니까.
오늘은 오바워치에 대해 말해보고 싶었다. 이 블로그의 ‘인트로’에서 영어로 취미가 있는데 이제 한국말로 자세히 설명할 것이다. 첫번째 취미는 오바워치다! 최근에 산 게임이니까 아직 잘 못 하지만 그래도 정말 재미있는 게임이다. 제일 좋아하는 캐릭터는 D.VA다. 로봇이 (메카) 가지고 있으니까 진짜 멋있다. 로봇이 파괴되었을 때 로봇에서 탈출하고 새로운 로봇을 호출해 다시 전장에 뛰어들 수 있다.
D.VA는 한국인이라서 한국말로 여러 가지 구절(?)을 말한다. 부스터를 쓸 때 ‘날아간다~’라고 하고, 방어 매트릭스를 쓸 때 ‘긍극기 차단!’, ‘APM 좀 올려 볼까’, 이런 표현을 자주 쓴다.

독도 분쟁을 보는 미국의 시각
한편 한-일간에 독도를 둘러싼 분쟁이 일고있는 가운데 세계 최대 도서관 인 미 의회도서관이 독도에 대한 도서 분류 주제어를 현행 ‘독도'에서 '리앙쿠르 바위섬’으로 바꾸는 방안을 검토중인 것으로 알려졌습니다.
미 의회 도서관의 이같은 움직임에 대해 캐나다 토론토대학 도서관의 한국학 책임자인 김하나 씨는 미 의회도서관이 주제어를 독도에서 ‘리앙쿠르 바위섬’으로 바꿀 경우 미국은 물론 캐나다와 대부분의 영어권 국가들은 도서를 분류 할 때 독도라는 명칭을 사용할 수 없을 것이라고 말했습니다.
'도서 전문가 인 김하나 씨는 만일 주제어를 독도에서 리앙쿠르 바위섬으로 바꿀 경우 독도와 관련된 모든 도서의 주제어가 리앙쿠르로 바뀔 것이라고 말했습니다.'
김하나 씨는 더욱 심각한 문제는 독도보다 동해 표기라고 지적했습니다. 미 의회도서관은 독도 주제어 변경과 함께 독도에 대한 큰 주제어를 ‘일본 영해에 있는 섬’으로 바꾸려하고 있다는 것입니다. 만일 이같은 변경이 이뤄질 경우 독도는 그 이름을 잃게 되는 것은 물론 ‘일본 영해에 속한 섬’으로 간주될 소지가 있다고 김하나 씨는 말했습니다. 김하나 씨는 독도의 주제어를 일본 영해에있는 섬으로 바꿀 경우 독도는 일본에 속하게된다고 말했습니다.

이처럼 미국 외교 당국과 언론은 독도 분쟁에 대해 중립적인 입장을 취하고 있지만 미국 출판계와 교육계, 그리고 인터넷의 현실은 다소 다릅니다. 미 국무부와 중앙 정보국 (CIA) 인터넷 홈페이지는 독도라는 이름 대신 '리앙 쿠르 바위섬'이라는 중립적 인 명칭을 사용하지만 동해는 ‘일본해’로 표기하고 있습니다. 미 연방 정부 산하기관인 ‘미국 지명위원회'도 독도 대신 ‘리앙 쿠르 바위섬’이라는 명칭을 쓰고 있습니다.
리앙쿠르 바위섬이라는 명칭은 지난 1849년 독도를 발견한 프랑스 포경선의 이름에서 유래한 것입니다. 즉, 한국은 이 섬을 독도라고하고 일본은 다케시마라고 주장하자 중간에 낀 미국은 중립적인 '리앙 쿠르 바위섬'이라는 명칭을 선택한 것입니다. 그러나 미국의 대다수 중학교 지리 교과서에는 독도나 리앙쿠르라는 지명이 아예 없고, 독도가 속해있는 동해를 대부분 일본해로 표기하고 있습니다.

This is a text from the textbook I’m using, Routledge Intermediate Korean Reader. It’s a little long so I’ll split it into a few parts. It is about the American perspective (diplomatically) on the Dokdo conflict between Korea and Japan.
독도 분쟁을 보는 미국의 시각
미국은 한국과 일본 간에 문제가 되고 있는 '독도 분쟁'에 대해 한-일 두 나라 사이의 문제라며 중립적인 입장을 취하고 있습니다. 미국으로서는 한국과 일본 모두 중요한 동맹인 까닭에 어느 한 편에 서기가 곤란하기 때문입니다. 독도 분쟁을 보는 미국의 시각을 000 기자가 정리했습니다.

People seemed to like my book recommendation post, so I decided to do one for webtoons as well.
Pretty much all webtoons are intermediate level and learner friendly (the ones I’ve seen anyway), so I’ll just recommend the ones I really liked, if you’re looking for something new to read. All of them can be found on the webtoon app.
DISCLAIMER: I don’t have the best taste in the world lol. I mostly read school/slice of life stuff since that’s the vocabulary I’m trying to learn.
1. 청춘 블라썸 by 홍덕 / NEMONE
A classic romance high school webtoon with many cliches, but also somehow my favorite webtoon ever? The main character is a girl named 보미, who’s in the second year of high school and has a “썸” (like a “thing”) going on with 재민 (who is very very cute btw). But she then finds out that her best friend has a crush on him, and the plot starts from there.
It’s not a complicated story, but I love all of the characters a lot and I impatiently wait for a new chapter release every saturday. The art is very pretty as well, quite manga-like. Definitely recommend.

2. 각자의 디데이 by 오묘
Again a high school story. The main characters are 진파란 and 연노랑, neighbors who meet in class and bond over the fact that they both have weird color names (파란 = blue, 노랑 = yellow). They date and then break up, and the story starts with them having to pretend to still be together until they perform on the school festival (where they’ll be doing a couples thing and don’t want to disappoint their whole class).
I really like the art in this one. It is a bit harder to read than the other ones, but not by too much.
3. 에이틴 by Playlist / LICO
This was made into a pretty well-known web series, which you can watch for free on youtube, with Korean and/or English subtitles. Again set in high school, this webtoon is pretty much a slice-of-life of the six protagonists, I don’t really know how else to summarize it.
EXTRA: 플레이, 플리 by 이에프
I’m putting this one as an extra because I don’t know if I can really recommend it lol. It’s my guilty pleasure webtoon, barely has a plot and yet I read it religiously. It’s about an idol who wants to collaborate with an instagram cover artist he likes to listen to (the protagonist of course), but since she doesn’t show her face on the videos, he doesn’t know that she’s actually on the same media class with him in college. Very cheesy and 100% self-indulgent, but what can I say. The characters are a little creepy-looking, if I’m being honest.
