But when he went to pull out, she wrapped her legs around him, holding him close.
“Don’t,” she whispered. “Not yet.”
He nodded, kissing her lips, staring into her eyes. When he pulled out, when their bodies separated, it would be over. The illusion shattered. So, he stayed in her, as their breathing calmed and their bodies regained sensation.
After what felt like an eternity, he pulled himself from her and rolled onto his back with a groan. He was spent and happy, He stretched out - savoring the soreness and sleepiness on his body.
“That was…” she started.
Amazing, magical, mind blowing, Draco thought.
“Wrong.”

A slow, dawning smile formed on his lips and he crossed his arms, looking her over, “what are you doing here?”
“I want you,” she said in a clear voice, fighting to keep it from shaking. Without another word, Draco grabbed her by the arm and pulled her to him, crushing her against his chest. His hands were in her hair and his mouth warm on hers as he slammed the door shut and backed her against it. She let out a whimper as his mouth found her jawline.
“Say it again,” Draco demanded, kissing the slope below her ear. She felt her whole body tingle as the sensation of his warm lips trailed down her body. He found her mouth again, kissing her greedily.
“I want you.”

After Hermione and Draco had bid their hosts a goodnight, they walked side by side up the grand staircase. The Aurors following a few paces behind them.
They didn’t touch, but Hermione could feel the air around them, palpable with electricity and excitement. She flicked a pinky and rubbed it along the back of his hand, and he looked out the corner of his eyes at her with a grin.
When they reached their respective doors, they said polite good nights, an act for the Aurors. Draco titled his head in question, but before Hermione could nod in agreement, she froze.
If she did this, there would be no going back… her marriage and her family; her career and all she worked for… was it worth it? The risk - she stared at him. He was so handsome, but more than that, he made her feel something she hadn’t felt in years. He had looked at her with admiration and longing, he had been proud to have her on his arm. He had been protective and attentive all night, never leaving her side.
She could feel him all over body - holding her face in his hands, clutching her as they danced, his fingers lightly on her back. She wanted to feel more, but she couldn’t. If she did…

He stood on the edge of the dance floor and immediately felt his anger disappate as he watched Hermione being spun around by a wizard who must have been in his 80s. The grey-haired wizard talked nonstop and Hermione’s face was trained into a polite expression, but Draco could see the boredom in her eyes.
“Help me,” she mouthed when her eyes caught Draco’s. He smirked and crossed the dance floor, never taking his eyes from hers.
“Excuse me,” Draco tapped the older wizard on the shoulder. He plastered on his most charming smile. “May I borrow Ms Granger? Most important ministry business.”
“Oh yes yes, of course!” The older man kissed Hermione’s hand before letting go. Hermione thanked the wizard graciously before starting off the dance floor. Draco took her hand, pulling her into his arms.
“What are you doing?” She asked, breathlessly, her chest against his, their hands entwining. Heat radiated up his arm as his hand closed around hers.
“Rescuing you,” Draco grinned down at her and started to waltz. She followed his lead, and Draco felt her relaxing into his arms. He allowed his hand to skim the bare skin of her lower back, and he felt her shiver against him.
“Are you done dancing with old kooks?” Draco asked, his large hands splaying over her back. Claiming her. “I don’t want to share you again tonight.”
His words from earlier echoed in her mind, “I want you.”
“I’m yours.”

Having Hermione on his arm… he was proud. She was beautiful, yes, but she was brave and strong and idealistic. And the thing he loved most - she could have done this alone. She didn't need him, or Ron, or anyone else on her arm. She had accomplished so much… on her own.
Draco couldn’t hold his question in any longer, “Why didn’t you change your name when you got married?”
Hermione looked at him thoughtfully, “I love the Weasleys, but I did this. I am where I am today because of… me.”
He studied her, smiling at her self-confidence, and she gave a small shrug, “and to honor my parents. They might not remember me, but I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Then, gently, he cupped her face in his hand and wiped away her tears of laughter gently with his thumb, “I’m so sorry… about what I said.”
“Is that why you didn’t want to come?” Hermione didn’t pull away, she barely moved, she just looked up at him, her brown ears searching. She reached up and grabbed his wrist, but didn’t move his hand from her face.
“No,” her skin burned under his finger and he stroked her cheek with his thumb. To his surprise, she titled her head into his hand and closed her eyes. “Of course not.”
She didn’t open her eyes, “why didn’t you want to come?”
Draco slowly pulled his hand away, but not before running his thumb down her neck, stopping at the base of her throat. She trembled under his touch, but opened her eyes when his hand left her body, breaking the hold he had on her.
“Why didn’t you want to come?” Hermione repeated, “Draco, please.”
“I can’t be around Weasel…” Draco couldn’t meet her eyes. “I can’t stand that he… gets you.”
“Why not?” Hermione demanded, her eyes were like fire, burning into his. He didn’t move, didn’t even dare to open his mouth - afraid of what might come out. When he didn’t respond, she demanded, “Draco… say it.”
“Because I want you,” his eyes burned into hers as her breath came out in a small gasp, her lips forming a small “oh”

“I, uh…” Draco started, his hands in his pockets. “I can’t go to Japan.”
Percy studied him quizzically, “why not?”
“It’s complicated.”
“Kingsley asked for you,” Percy’s lips were thin and his eyes narrowed, “specifically.”
Draco let out a huff, “so what, I’m going to go out and dance? Come see the reformed Death Eater on Parade!”
Percy’s lips curled up into a smile, “we’re not gonna make you dance, mate.”
“I can’t go,” Draco said resolutely.
“You have to go,” Percy stood up. “Kingsley and I have to be in the states for a meeting of Magical Congress.”
“I can’t,” Draco’s voice was rising. “Can’t you find…”
“What’s going on?” Hermione’s voice interrupted.
“Draco’s trying to get out of The Japan trip.”
“Why?” Draco turned in time to see the flash of surprise in Hermione’s eyes, she reached out and grabbed Draco’s hand. It burned, he forgot how it burned when she touched him. He pulled his hand out of her grip.
“I’m sorry we don’t all fall all over ourselves for Saint Granger, Patron Saint of Mudbloods, but some of us have lives.”
As soon as the words came out of his mouth, he regretted them, he snapped his mouth shut. Her eyes grew large and her mouth opened in shock, she looked as if she had been slapped. There was a burning in her eyes as she pointed a finger at him, her mouth open, but at a loss of words.
“I wish,” she finally said, her voice low and full of a malice he had never heard from lips. “I wish I had let you rot in Azkaban, Malfoy.”

“I don’t understand, Granger.” Draco sat back in his seat, taking a sip of his coffee, surveying her. “You’re smart, beautiful, the most powerful witch in England…”
“Stop…” Hermione admonished, her eyes moving to the floor, a slight blush appearing on her cheeks. Draco pushed from his seat and walked around to her, placing two fingers under her chin gingerly and lifting her face to meet his gaze.
“It’s not a compliment, Granger. I’m not saying anything that isn’t true….
“You deserve better,” he continued, his eyes burning into hers. Her eyes were wide and brown and bright, her chest rising softly with each word. His fingers traveled from her chin and ghosted her cheek, her neck. “Someone who appreciates you, who adores you, who sees how… amazing, you truly are.”
“Draco,” she breathed softly, something between a laugh and a sigh. She turned from him, but he grabbed her wrist, gently, and ran his fingers delicately over the red welts that were left from Ron’s grip. Draco’s eyes turned cold as he held on to it, rubbing the welt with his thumb. She could feel the spot tingle, her breath caught in her throat. He raised her thin wrist to his lips, and kissed it gently, a gasp escaping Hermione’s lips, her eyes wide.

“Now you tell me something,” he turned, using her silence as an opening. “Why did you marry him?’
Hermione thought of the letter, still tucked into her desk… hidden away and charmed so Ron would never find it.
“Please,” it had read. “Please don’t marry him.”
“Why did you care?” She answered the question with a question, because she couldn’t bring herself to tell him the truth. She had been broken and lonely, after the war. She had lost her parents, and the Weasleys were the only family she had left.
“You settled, Granger,” Draco seethed through gritted teeth, grabbing her hand. The heat scorched through both of their skin. “You settled. You fucking settled. He doesn’t deserve you.”
“Ron is - “
“Don’t,” Draco interrupted, his eyes intense. “Don’t defend him. Please. You need to know… you’re the best witch I’ve ever known. I think you’re amazing.”

“How are you getting on?”
Draco looked around the room and shrugged, “best job I’ve ever had.”
She arched an eyebrow, studying him, “You surprise me, Malfoy.”
He narrowed his eyes and she continued, “I always knew you were smart, but I thought you were spoiled…”
“Oh, I am, you should see my collection of dragon-hide boots.”
“You’re not what I expected…”
“Neither are you.”
“What did you expect?”
He shrugged, “insufferable know it all”
“Oh I still am,” She sunk into the chair across from him, her eyes dancing. “I’ve just learned tact.”
“Ahhhh… so you’re still an insufferable know it all and I’m still a spoiled prick.”
Hermione snorted, the sound so absurd he found himself grinning at her.
“I never said prick!”
“But you thought it.”

Draco studied her carefully, sitting back, and taking his glasses off, “You would make a good Slytherin.”
Hermione couldn’t help but roll her eyes and let out a laugh, “is that supposed to be an insult or a compliment?
“You mean you can’t tell?” Draco stood up so he towered over her. She looked up at him and bit her lips. She suddenly realized how quiet the office was, how quiet the whole ministry was. She was alone, with Draco Malfoy. A shiver ran up her spine - but she didn’t know if it was a nervous or excited shiver. Maybe both.
“With you,” Hermione breathed. “I can never tell.”

Draco was leaning back in his chair, feet casually on his desk, crossed at his ankles. He was intensely studying the parchment in front of him, and he was wearing glasses. She leaned against the doorframe and studied him.
“Are you going to stand in the archway and stare, Granger,” he asked without lifting his eyes from the document in front of him. “Or are you going to make yourself useful?”
She scoffed and pushed off the doorframe, “you wear glasses.”
“We’re getting older, Granger” he said simply, tearing his gaze from the report in front of him and looking intently over the rim of his glasses at her. “What do you want?” Chapter Six; so it goes
