Let’s do some backyard botany!
I took these photos today while walking my dog Korra, less than 5 miles from my house.
I didn’t have to hike or go very far to find some amazing native plants. So go out and look around your yard, take a walk around your local park, I mean they even grow on the sides of the road!
Our native plants are very important to our local eco systems, they provide food, shelter and not to mention some have beautiful flowers! Let’s try to take a moment a look for them in our busy lives and appreciate what they do for us and our planet!
Here’s a few ways to help:
Plant native plants of your own! You can check out your local plant nurseries and join local native plant Facebook groups where someone might just have the plant you need!
Research the plants you already have. You may have an invasive plant in your own garden that’s competing with your local native plants and not giving the local pollinators a food source they are evolved and adapted to use.
Stop using pesticides. There are so many harmless ways to keep your beloved plants and yard safe from insects! Not to mention pesticides are harmful in many more ways for us and the planet!
Here’s a natural pesticide recipe:
2 tbs cooking oil (vegetable or canola oil)
1 cup water
2 tbs biodegradable dish soap
Thanks for reading!
