A Newcomers Guide to Kylux Subships
Welcome to Kylux! After The Last Jedi, there may be some people new to the Kylux fandom. It’s so good to have you! There is a whole lot of content and a lot to see around here. There’s also a nice little handful of what may be confusing terminology, as there are a few different subsets to the ship. So I thought I would make a handy little guide! Here are some of the subships within the Kylux ship!
Also known as Hard Kylux.
Classic Kylux is how we describe the sorts of fics that were most common around the time that the fandom was new, right after the release of The Force Awakens. It consisted of a lot of graphic, hardcore BDSM and kink content, and not always of a particularly healthy nature. It was darkfic with a lot of choking, hatefucking, bootlicking and Hux putting his cigarras out on Kylo’s skin. It was also fairly predominantly centered around power exchange dynamics in which Hux was in the Dominant role and Kylo in the submissive, though the reverse was also present in smaller quantities. If you browse some of the original tags you will find a lot of this sort of content! There are many people (like myself) still creating this sort of content, but it was the most in vogue in the beginning of the fandom (though the new film has seen a resurgence of this sort of work!)
Huxlo as a term isn’t used a whole lot anymore, but was postulated around the time that the fandom started portraying more and more submissive/bottom Hux with Dominant/top Kylo. Huxlo was suggested as a tag for fans who preferred to keep interpreting Hux as the Dominant and Kylo as the submissive, and was a nod to the older, now out of style fandom tradition of putting the Dominant character first in a slash configuration. (ie Hux/Kylo is Dom Hux, wheras Kylo/Hux is Dom Kylo) This term is still sometimes used, and simply means Kylux where Hux is the Dom or top. It can be Classic in the sense that it has hard content, or it can be fluffier.
Benarmie is a subset of Kylux that focuses a lot on fluff, angst, pining and young love. It generally sets the fic when the characters are younger, and haven’t come into their adult identities yet, with Ben Solo instead of Kylo Ren and Cadet Armitage Hux instead of General Hux of the First Order. These stories are defined by being less hardcore, having a more romantic nature, and are often free of sexual content. Many Modern AUs have also fallen into this category!
Techiniecian is a Kylux spinoff ship, involving alternate versions of the characters. Matt the Radar Technician was a popular character from an SNL skit wherine Kylo Ren disguises himself in an alter ego, and has since been the subject of much fanworks. Some fanworks may portray Matt as a disguise of Kylo’s, and others portray him as his own separate character. There was no such alter ego for Hux, until the fandom latched on to the Clan Techie character from the film Dredd (2012), played by the same actor as Hux, and started using him as a similar alternate or double for Hux. Some fics may have Hux with Matt, and some may have Kylo with Techie, but many feature Matt with Techie, giving birth to a whole ship of it’s own, Techienician.
Many fics or fanart may of course fall into more than one of these categories, or none of them at all! These are simply notable subships and terms that are thrown around, and not at all a complete guide to all of Kylux which also encompasses many different AUs and character interpretations.

The newcomer’s guide to kylux
It seems that with The Last Jedi, we have many new kylux shippers in the fandom. The last two years have been, erm, interesting for kylux, so here are a few things that you should know.
Hux was not given a first name until “Armitage Day” in 2016, where he was named in one of the pre-TFA novels. This is why there are many different first names for him in early fanfics. Hux’s father’s name is Brendol. Before the reveal of Armitage, people often called Hux “Brendol” in fics.
“techienician” is the name given to the Matt/Techie pairing. Matt is from Matt the radar technician (Saturday Night Live sketch “Undercover Boss: Starkiller Base”) and Techie from the movie Dredd (played by Domhnall Gleeson). Techie has recently been named Bill Huxley in the recent Dredd comics.
“benarmie” is the name given to (usually young) Ben Solo paired with (usually) cadet Armitage Hux.
“Kylo Amidala” is Kylo in traditional Naboo clothing, usually working in politics rather than being a First Order enforcer.
There is a huge range from soft kylux to hard kylux, with many things in between and tons of AUs. There is something for everyone here!
Two useful prompt blogs are @softkyluxkinks and @kyluxhardkinks.
Mid-2016, things got a bit weird after something known as “dildo discourse 2k16″.
Oviposition means egg insertion. It’s prevalent in the fandom.
There have been many discourses. Size discourse (who is bigger, Kylo or Hux?), top/bottom discourse, dildo discourse, freckle discourse (does Hux have freckles or not? some people got very worked up over this), etc.
Robe Hux and the ice blue couch come from Delilah Dawson’s Phasma novel.
Millicent is Hux’s ginger cat. She is the invention of Pablo Hidalgo, a Disney creative executive.
A huge portion of the fandom is queer (maybe even the majority), so don’t believe any bullshit you may hear from the antis.
