Quote
I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half agony. Basically I am full agony. You're awful never speak to me again.
Jane Austen, Persuasion (Slightly edited)

So this is your opinion of me. Thank you for explaining so fully. Perhaps these offences might have been overlooked had not your pride been hurt by my honesty.

Why, especially, when you called, did you look as if you did not care about me? Because you were grave and silent, and gave me no encouragement.

Collection’s Highlight: Dress
Family tradition relates that this gown was included in the trousseau of Elizabeth Mary Douglas when she married President Monroe’s nephew, James Monroe, Jr., in 1822. The cut and drape of this elegant dress was somewhat old-fashioned by then, but still stunning with its silver thread embroidery. The combination of silver and white became popular for wedding gowns by the 1750s, but not all wedding gowns were white. Although fashion plates illustrating this gown style appear frequently from 1806-1809, Princess Charlotte, the daughter of the Prince of Wales and Princess Caroline of Brunswick, married Prince Leopold of Cobourg in 1816 wearing a similar gown. A twin to the gown displayed here survives in a private collection and has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
