About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:

These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:

But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.

Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.

If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.

Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.

Draco fell for Ron and hated it. He first took note of how charming he was in a awkward but endearing way. He refused to admit he found his jokes funny when he overheard them or that he liked how kind he was to people he hardly knew. Ron was so different to him. He laughed outwardly, defended people even at his own cost, admitted when he was wrong and dumb and did his best to fix it… Draco didn’t know what upset him most, the fact that he was getting a flitty feeling in his stomach that could only be a crush when he though or was around the Weasley or that fact that part of him wished he could be like him. He was jealous, that wasn’t new, but never had he wanted to be kind before, until he saw how it made his reluctant crush smile and beam. Draco accept he loved his designated enemy by fifth year after failing at convincing himself it was a physical thing and no more. He doesn’t try to be good but he does stop being bad, holding his tongue and slowly distancing himself from friends he never really liked.

Ron genuinely didn’t like Draco Malfoy at the start. He didn’t hate him, only for brief moments when he insulted his friends or family. He didn’t like hating, it felt wrong and made him sick. It was as he got older that started to understand things more, to look at other perspectives and think about things as more than black and white. He started to take note at how Malfoy never went home for holidays, how he tensed when abuse or neglect was ever mentioned, how he started to slowly grow more submissive and detached. He starts to realise that Malfoy hates Malfoy, more than anyone else ever could. He brings it up with Hermione and she talks about how Nature vs. Nurture and how children often just do as their parents do. She says she stopped hating Draco and just started to pity him, to which Harry looks confused at but says nothing. Ron knows that the things Draco has done can’t just be erased but that doesn’t mean he should be left to rot. He doesn’t fully realise he’s doing it but at the end of their fifth year, Ron is giving Draco smiles across the room, helping him when he has trouble in certain classes without making a fuss, subtly raising his voice when he talks about people being allowed second chances and how to be more accepting to other minorities. During Sixth year, they share a silent lunch together in the hallway and Ron catches himself staring at him. He does it more and more, finding himself staring, getting a little nervous when others chat him up and feels his heart clench almost painfully when the other leaves his side. Ron realises he’s in love with Draco Malfoy, deep and truely in his soul. It scares him how quickly he’s become tied to him, how protective and determined at times to keep him safe and happy he’s become. He used to avoid him as much as he could, yet as soon as he stated to see who he really was, behind his parents and faults, Ron found someone worth devoting his life to. He used to think he’d do anything to protect Harry as his best friend, and while that still stands true, Ron finds that there are things he wouldn’t do for Harry that he’d do for Draco without a second thought. He’s give his life for his friend and family, but every time he watches Draco go back to his family, he knows he’d be much more willing to take a life for the man he loves. Ron loves Draco silently yet dangerously, not caring if he can’t have him, as long as he’s alive and happy, Ron couldn’t care.

Draco assumes Ron could never love him, not like he has for years.

Ron knows Draco could never love him as much as Ron does him.
