Tomorrow is International Sunflower Guerilla Gardening Day. I have scouted some great places in my neighbourhood these last few months, and I'm gonna go out an plant sunflower seeds tonight and tomorrow night.
But it's not just guerilla gardening that is on my mind. After my father died years ago, sunflowers became a source of consolation and solace for my mum. For a few years, we gifted her sunflowers in myriad forms to be with her in her grief when we couldn't: as small bouquets, as paintings or postcards, on mugs, as puzzles, etc.
In a way, the sunflowers I'll be seeding are as much a tribute to my mum and her resiliency and grief, as they are to my dad's memory, as they are to everyone in the guerilla gardening community who is doing the same all over the world. And I think that is beautiful.

Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”
and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”
and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.
