it's funny, I was talking to someone last night who didn't really know what an illustrator was. so when I introduced myself as one, he gave a speech that would've probably gone over well with a gallery artist, but which was precision-tailored to make any illustrator within a 50 mile radius go into eyes-glowing-red kill mode.

his speech was about how there is a difference between craft and art, and how people can practice craft (as in, skillfully execute a painting) without it having any artistic merit.

so I'm someone who gets paid to paint waffles for restaurant menus and dinosaurs for museums exhibits, and AHHHHHH! AHHHHHHH! you can't make art without it being something something you've made. does that make sense? like every illustrator I know has an individual way of approaching any given imagery that is informed by a lifetime of inspiration, and of passive intake of culture, and of the specific mistakes they make because of whatever their particular mass of grey matter deems as important thing to render or unimportant, just fuck it up.

I can make something that is informed by both a century of Canadian print-making and by my own particular neurosis, and it can also be commissioned commercial imagery that I regurgitate without care because I want to pay my mortgage. everything is art, nothing isn't art, art is something sticky and impossible to shake off of you.

I went to public high school in suburban NJ in the late 1990s.

One of the required classes for each year of high school was a health/gym class, where you had 2 semesters of gym and 1 of health. Health covered a different topic each year, and for our senior year, it was life skills. We learned how to budget (the lessons were not realistic or useful) we learned about searching for jobs (this was right before online applications became a thing, so again, this was useless as preparation) and we had to partner up with another student and have a flour-sack baby for the semester. This, also, was completely unrealistic and did not prepare anyone for anything. But I got to partner up on the project with my best friend - the only person I've EVER done a group project with and not had to carry the group by myself - and it was kind of fun to have a reason to play make-believe in school at 17 years old.

When my older sister (11 years older than me) came up through the same school in the late 1980s, the babies were raw eggs. If the egg developed a crack before the end of the project, it would affect students' grades. My sister's didn't crack. She also is a breath-takingly talented artist, and she painted a very realistic face on her egg, and she cut off the end of one of her own blonde curls and glued it to the egg, to be baby hair. She borrowed a bunch of my My Little Pony furniture, and so somewhere there are photos of this egg with this startlingly human face sitting in a My Little Pony baby pony high chair. She gave it a tissue diaper, too.

The school switched from egg babies to flour-sack babies after my sister's class, because so many students, once they were done, threw the (at that point) expired and slightly rotting eggs at the school doors and windows.

okay americans i gotta ask because as an European i grew up with lots of american shows and cartoons and in a lot of them there was an episode where they give the protags a doll or an egg or a bag of flour or whatever and told them pretend to be its parents or something
