‘I guess you don’t want to come up to the mountain with us, then?’ Laurie looked hopeful.
‘You could sleep in John’s jeep on the way up,’ Bill offered.
‘No, but thanks for the invitation. I’d love to go some other time.’
Before she agreed to let him leave, he had to promise to go with Laurie and Bill the next time they went up the mountain. Bill pointed out that he should go with John, since John was the one who stayed up there for weeks on end. After that, there came a series of brief digressions on a variety of subjects from John’s ecology thesis to faking Bigfoot prints, to the massive fungal mats that linked thousands of trees throughout miles of forest.
