something i've noticed. people seem to think the most nature-y nature is forests. so forests are always prioritized for conservation, and planting trees is synonymous with ecological activism. my state was largely prairies and wetlands before colonization. those ecosystems are important too. trees aren't the end-all be-all of environmentalism. plant native grasses. protect your wetlands.

One of the prettiest moments in winter is when the sun starts to come out again in like february/march but it’s still cold but that doesn’t matter because everything feels light and fresh and you walk outside without freezing because the sunshine is warming your face and everything is starting to wake up

Worship of a god is sometimes simple recognition.
It is recognition when a god is in the rain or in the snow. When a god is in the lightning or the wind. It is appreciating a god in the rising of the sun or the light of the moon.
But it is also recognizing when a god is in you- When a god moves through you. Feels through you. Lives through you.
When I crack open a book and blindly devour it, read it as though I am hungrily searching for something larger and terrifying beneath its words, seeking for knowledge that could both potentially destroy me and yet set me free, I know that is Odin.
When I challenge myself physically, when I test my constitution and my stamina, or when I have mornings where I don't want to get of bed on account of fatigue or executive dysfunction but I do despite the enormity of the task, I know that's Fehérlófia.
When I wakeup in my room when it's dark and still and am left with a lingering sensation of a dream, or walk through a quiet whispering landscape of snow and feel the cold within me, when I become suddenly aware of my own looming death, I know that's Morana.
The gods have many physical forms; rocks, trees, sea and river, but we are their vessels that allow them to experience humanity for all that it is worth. We are the glove through which they feel all creation as only humans can, and in return they lend us their power. Acknowledgment of this exchange is important. Acknowledgement of this exchange is sometimes enough.

Romans Stored Henbane Seeds in Vial Made From an Animal Bone
“Archaeologists in the Netherlands have discovered a Roman settler’s stash of poisonous seeds, sealed in a hollowed-out animal bone 2,000 years ago.
The discovery is the first evidence that Romans in the Netherlands collected and stored seeds from the black henbane plant, a highly toxic member of the nightshade family. While the plant has long been notorious for its poisonous effects, it also has a reputation as a medicinal aid.”

Revised prayer to Ðirona
Starkindler, bubbling font! Hail!
Asteriá, moon! Hail, Hail
Glimmering Lady, I beseech
I, humbly, whom You have called to
I, having given art, praise
Do now call, Shinning One
Hear me, threefold Queen
Cosmic spring
Above and below
The waters of the Sky black mirror
Dumnos, Albios
Unbecoming, remaking, becoming
Adder and egg
Regina Caeli, Fontis Stella
Ueronados and Anderandos
Giamos and Samos
Both are mirrored in you
Tumblr media
Praise unceasing unto the Queen
Within you the mysteries found
As stars to your brow are bound

The apple-hearted, sun soaked, wrists wreathed in flame, feet washed in milk. Flaxen-haired maiden: She begets the fire, with death's song in her throat and love on her lips. The unending hope of the stolen sun.

I'm thinking they might be hackberries
Went for a hike yesterday and saw hundreds of dull black berries (not blackberries) had dropped along the trail
They fell from a tall tree not a shrub but I haven't been able to identify the type of tree since it's still winter.
The berries are dull black and hang off the branch from individual stems not clusters and there seems to be no sepal. Wish I knew what kind of tree/berries these are, they're strikingly beautiful.

Hey, hey! Hope you’re well. :)
1, 8, 4 for the asks?
Thanks :) Anna beat you to #4 but here are the others
1) Do you have a favorite holy day?
Probably Hexennacht the weather is finally getting warmer, all the trees in my neighborhood are flowering, the plant spirits that I communicate with that have been dormant over the winter return - it's so invigorating. It's the seasonal hinge into the bright half of the year for me, very welcome after winter lasting basically half the year. It also marks the start of me incorporating more ecstatic practices whereas during winter my trance work is more subdued
8) popular holiday you don't celebrate? Or celebrate differently?
Midsummer/summer solstice. That date is just not the middle of summer here and many of the traditions aren't things I'm able to do. Most of the herbs I'll want to harvest aren't ready yet and I have no way to hold a bonfire. Also there isn't much solar focus in my work, especially the more "masculine" solar energy which is what I typically see people focus on during midsummer. I do mark the day, by gathering Elder flowers and by acknowledging the moment Orion is directly overhead/aligned with the sun on his shoulder (even tho I can't see it since it's during the day) but overall it's not a big moment for my practice by any means

A Nighttime Prayer
Our Lady of the Shining Ones,
Blessed art thou who walks
Among the hollowed hills
You are the whitethorn woman with
Hallowed hands that reach deep
Into the wells to make them sacred
Eyes fixed on the starlight, it is you
Who guides the departed home.
May your blessings fall soft and warm
Upon me and mine, like the fire's light.
Cast your cloak over this house and
Let us be encircled in your protection:
On this hour and every hour,
On this day and every day,
On this night and every night.

4 and 5 for musing's ask game
4) are there holy days from your ancestors or ancestors cultures you keep?
So my whole ritual calendar has its foundations built on trying to honor the holy days of my ancestors but grounded in the land I currently live in so I wouldn't be able to point to one holiday that's kept from my ancestors' cultures. Instead I think including Mardi Gras in my ritual calendar is the thing that stands out. My ancestors, as far as I know, weren't Catholic so I don't really do the dual faith incorporation of Saints and folk Catholic practices that's popular in traditional witchcraft circles right now but Mardi Gras is the exception because I grew up in south Louisiana. It's a part of my prepagan prewitch culture Im holding on to but I celebrate it with a focus on the animistic nature of the return of spring spirits to drive out the winter spirits. Plus who can turn down a good king cake
5) favorite traditions from your holy days
Going to see the migration of the sandhill cranes to mark the start of spring. 80% of the world's cranes migrate to this one area and I live close enough to see it. It's breathtaking and I love performing divination based on their flight. There's nothing like the sound they make, it echoes in your head for hours and breaks the silence of winter
I also love making my grandmother's fudge recipe with my mom on Mother's Night. She doesn't know it's Mother's Night but the tradition means a lot to both of us
