Dazai Osamu is so special a character to me, really. I have consumed an ungodly amount of media, loved and hated a wide spectrum of characters, with varying degrees of morality, and yet never have I wished death, doom, destruction, and degradation on a character as much as I do Dazai. I pray nothing goes right in his life, I pray he never finds meaning, I pray he crumbles under the weight of his own derailing mental health and trauma.

I dislike him immensely.

I don't know how to explain it, but this is how I feel Beast AU dealt with Akutagawa wanting to kill Dazai, and it continues to baffle me, in a good way.

Like, what do mean Oda "I don't kill" Sakunosuke got Ranpo off his ass to find what was essentially Akutagawa's boogyman, with absolutely zero information other than "he wore black idk." And not only did Ranpo deliver, as he always does, the entire Agency made a contingency plan on how to best support him when he does commit the murder? (yeah, yeah, it was to save Gin, whatever). Never once did Oda say "maybe revenge isn't the answer," and even when he did try to steer Akutagawa in a better path, it was for the betterment of his temper and attitude, rather than revenge itself.

And not to mention Tanizaki?? A real one. Best friend. Greatest mate. Ride or die. Kingest shit who supported Akutagawa's vengeance left and fucking right. Wanna storm the Mafia HQ?? Of course, bestie, right behind you. Oh, we're kidnapping this 14 year old girl?? Say no more. You're reaching the top to fight the actual mafia boss??? Show absolutely no mercy, king.

And then!! When Oda does meet Dazai, who gives his whole "for the greater good speech," Oda ain't having shit. Absolutely ready to shoot a bitch. Man was waiting for Dazai's apology to Akutagawa and when it didn't come, he pulled out a gun on him.

I genuinely love this story so much because never did I expect people to support Akutagawa and take his side, because when does that ever happen, so to see it like that??? Beautiful. Gorgeous. Never been done before. Thank you, Asagiri.

best part of princess bride is that inigo loudly and openly states to anybody who will listen that he's going to kill a guy for revenge and has been chasing this for a while and instead of anybody saying "but revenge wont bring ur father back are u really sure that killing this guy will make anything better arent u scared of regretting the one thing uve spent ur entire life chasing" they're all just like "yea dude sounds cool hope you find him" and then he does and inigo kills him and is just "aw cool my dads avenged now i can go ride off into the sunset with my friends" and i think thats actually really great. yea maybe revenge isnt always the answer but it sure does make you feel better

Yes, let's talk about the abuse cycle in Bsd. Let's talk about what people don't seem to mention, ever.

Mori. Dazai. Akutagawa. Kyouka.

Though nothing is certain about what the relationship between Mori and Dazai was really like, there is a clear difference between these relationships.

Mori is appreciative of Dazai. Much as he is scared of him, Mori would take Dazai back to the Mafia in a heartbeat. From the flashbacks, we could see that Dazai and Mori had relatively easy talks, Mori confided in him, was always honest, and 15 year old Dazai seemed to talk freely with him. The abuse is, far as we know, emotional manipulation on a great scale.

Akutagawa was probably violent with Kyouka, just as Dazai was with him, though I suppose at a lesser scale (i don't think he ever shot bullets at her, for example). One thing that we do notice, though, is that Akutagawa never talks down to her? He acknowledged her strength and gave her the same reason to live that he believed in himself. Then, he also acknowledges her growth, is actually happy for her happiness, and in Dead Apple, even suggests for her to kill him when he's at his weakest. There's also a lack of emotional dependence— unlike his own case, Akutagawa did not mold her to depend on his approval. And when she sees him, she has a less severe reaction than she did when she saw Mori, for example.

And then, you have Akutagawa and Dazai. And this is what really pisses me off. Because not only is Dazai both emotionally and physically abusive to Akutagawa, he continues to keep his hold on Akutagawa even after he has become a "good guy." He keeps Akutagawa tethered to him, manipulates him in dangerous situations Akutagawa has no business being in, and purposely plays into the boy's trauma bond to him to use him. All while giving everything to a random orphan he met on the streets that - objectively speaking - is no better than Akutagawa?

This is my personal view on their relationships, and I haven't read any light novels but Beast, so there might be information I'm missing.

But no amount of context can change the fact - and I mean fact - that Dazai had absolutely zero excuse to do what he did to Akutagawa. While in the Mafia or after it. Because the guy with an IQ of a billion, who was himself saved and shown kindness by another in his darkest times should have fucking known better.

What keeps me going every day is the knowledge that if Beast Akutagawa had the full context of why Dazai is the way he is, he would think him the most pathetic person alive. Akutagawa would see the way he kept his distance from Oda and Chuuya and Atsushi and everyone that mattered to him and think, "Boo fucking hoo, man up and stop running away from your fears, you coward."

And I think that's beautiful.

People: You should read Beast, you'll cry!

Me, reading Beast: This is literally a fix it fic for me. Happiness all around. I'm satisfied. Like, Akutagawa is loved and taken care of?? Oda is alive?? Tanizaki and Akutagawa friendship?? Possible sskk relationship post-canon?? Dazai dead?? It has absolutely all of my favorite things.

Thinking about this has me crying—

So, in Beast, Akutagawa grew up in the streets, right? Realistically, how literate would he even be? In the manga, his report was really simple, and he did talk to Astsushi about getting paper and books, but suppose that he couldn't read.

I imagine him learning that Kunikida is a teacher, and although he was a math teacher, Akutagawa goes to him and asks if he could teach Akutagawa to read properly, fully complete and complicated sentences.

Obviously, Kunikida thinks it's a great idea and will help, but seeing how focused Akutagawa is about it, he asks, "What brought this on?"

And Akutagawa is quiet for a moment, before he looks down, saying softly, "Oda-san is writing a book."

I don't think I can truly express how much it physically upsets me to hear the words Dazai says to Akutagawa in season 1, when he's captured by the Mafia.

It genuinely makes me sick to my stomach because...why?

Just...why? This is the first time you have had a proper talk with him in 4 years. You had a chance to fix things. You're supposedly better now. A good man. Akutagawa didn't even do anything; does the man offend you by like, existing? Breathing?

Do you truly not wish to make any amends?
