He also tells Professor G before the start of Operation Meteor that he was headed to Earth to hit the beach. He’s been wearing his Hawaiian shirts ever since, hoping to finally get that vacation he so rightly deserves.

Because they live in artificial environments, colonists don’t often experience extreme darkness due to the constant presence of street lamps, natural built-in bio-luminescence in their homes, as well as emergency paths and port illumination while the colony is experiencing artificial nocturnal hours. Even though they live surrounded by the vast blackness of space they are all accustomed to having some source of light available to them.

Heero, by nature, is distrusting of others and tends to feel more comfortable when he feels in control of his situation and environment. He always searches for a ‘way out’ of any room or building he enters, whether he will need to quickly escape or not. As part of his extreme psychological conditioning the CLO used dark rooms and blindfolds to force him to comply during his reconditioning training (physical abuse was rare) and whenever he failed a mission in simulation or while using his MS Leo in training his suit was remotely deactivated which left him in total darkness, locked in the cockpit for hours at a time.

Even after the wars ended he still can’t handle being in absolute darkness. He discreetly carries a miniature flashlight as a key chain, he leaves chemlights and flares in every vehicle he drives, and personally ensures that the Preventer backup generators are operational.

He always keeps one particular floor lamp lit in his home, no matter what the time of day is. The guys eventually find out. Now, anytime Heero visits any one of them, there is always a nightlight in any room he happens to be sleeping in. Nobody has directly confronted him about it.
