Ways of mentioning Hindu heritage
Hi! I am writing an Indian British character, and the one part of research that I am really struggling with is religion. I am very wary when writing about any religion, because I know it can be quite a delicate subject and easy to get wrong. I found out that Hinduism is the most common religion for British people with Indian heritage. I have two other characters who are Christian, so I do want to mention that the character is Hindu, and I was wondering if there is a way that I could mention that the character is Hindu in the same way that a mentioning someone wearing a cross necklace could symbolise a character is Christian? I really don’t want religion to become a main theme in the novel, but I want to mention it because I really want the representation to be correct.
I can think of a couple ways. The analogue to a Christian wearing a cross necklace would probably be some display of the Om symbol (ॐ), which is generally regarded as the main symbol of Hinduism. If someone were to choose to display it on their person, a necklace is an option, but I’ve also seen it as an item on a charm bracelet and as a tattoo. The Om symbol has also been adopted by plenty of forms of Hindu-ish New Age-ism, but adherents of these beliefs are typically not South Asian, so the combination of visible South Asian heritage and the Om symbol is a fairly strong predictor of Hindu identification.
If there’s a particular deity the character likes or reveres then they may display them in a similar fashion. The same applies—I’ve seen a plenty of Ganesh tattoos on American New Agers and I’m not going to get into whether that’s cultural appropriation or not here, but suffice it to say that if a deity comes from your culture to begin with, you can’t appropriate it to yourself, so that could be a valid, visible way of establishing their religious identity.
The last way isn’t a visible marker, but a verbal and action-based one: mentioning or being shown participating in Hindu festivals or cultural activities. This can be as simple as “When I visited my grandmother for [Diwali/Janamashtami/some festival]“—look up a Hindu calendar to see what festivals would be appropriate for the time of year in question, or mentioning having, say, a sacred thread ceremony (it’s the analogue of Confirmation or a Bar/Bat Mitzvah). Have them show up in traditional dance clothes in one scene and say they were just coming from bharatnatyam rehearsal or something. This doesn’t have to be obtrusive or heavily lampshaded. Cultural mentions like this can easily be fit into one or two sentences and get the point across. Then you can move on with your storytelling.

Soojin has a secret hobby
Imagine your favorite character amongst a pile of stuffed animals. Are the stuffed animals yours, theirs, or a combination of both? Are you gonna join them in whatever they’re doing or take blackmail photos?
